Realistic Gun Control Options

I am curious what realistic gun control options people are hoping for?

Please post your ideas and how it would effectively reduce crime or mass shootings.

How about we begin with actually prosecuting and locking up firearms violators using the laws we have instead of playing "catch and release"?

If people are being arrested for illegal firearms under the current standard then no legislature is really needed. More stiff penalties for illegal gun ownership is what you think will solve the issues of gun control?

We do have effective laws....if they are actually used.

Well... one... you are probably going to get a massive number of black people in jail in Chicago if that is enforced more...

And Chicago has pretty strict gun laws teetering on being Unconstitutional, so it seems a lot of these dismissed cases might technically be violations under Chicago law, but technicalities that might bring a lawsuit against the state.

So, we shouldn't enforce the law because it might hurt someones racial feelings??

That's not racism....that's statistics.

I agree...lol... but I hear the whining coming from all the way in the distant parallel universe in which this future comes to past already xD

I really don''t think it's a gun control issue.

It's a modern culture issue. We have created an environment where social, cultural and societal pressure is extremely weaker than it ever has been before... which before kept these sort of people in line.

Fully automatic weapons were legal until the 80s... and we didn't have this issue.

This is going to sound bogus.... but this REALLY is the cost of a Liberal culture.... it invites chaos, instead of order. I'm not saying that our culture becoming more Liberal is a Net bad thing, of course... could very well be a Net good.... but this is the cost. The lack of order and structure in our lives... lack of societal expectations, and doing the right thing. And that there is even objectively such a thing as good and bad. I bet this Individual is quite Nihilistic. Our Modern Technology exacerbates all of this... people have access to all kinds of thinking ALL the time. They are not in a structured and protected environment of discipline, we are exposed to all the good and evil in the world at the push of a button at an extremely young age.

You and I do not decide who commits crimes.....we do not determine demographics of urban areas; But, you are correct in that many would view enforcement of the laws as particularly targeted to minorities.

And yet, these are the same people that scream for more laws to keep them safe.

Reagan made it very difficult to own full auto: by making it illegal to purchase any more. We can do the same with semiautos and bump stocks as well.

And we should not make silencers legal.

There's no such thing as a "silencer." You've seen too many movies.

Bump stocks are irrelevant. Any semi-auto can bump-fire.

So you don't think anything is needed?

That is a BS "conclusion" - the poster clearly stated that enforcement of existing laws would get many convicted felons (career criminals?) illegally possessing guns "off the streets". The problem, of course, is that these "simple possession" crimes are seen as victimless (non-violent?) crimes and would "disproportionately target" minorities.

No, given Heller, you really can't make it illegal to buy semi-automatic weapons.

And we should not make silencers legal.

They are legal. There are about 800,000 of them in citizen's possession.

Repeal the National Firearms Act.

So you don't think anything is needed?

The death penalty should be mandatory for all gun murders. Mandatory life + 50 years for attempted murder and robbery, using a firearm.

and no sitting on death row for 15-20 years waiting

you get one appeal....within one year

after that, you get the needle

There goes that "silencer" word again.

Have you ever actually heard a suppressor?

Contrary to what Hollywood would have you believe, it does not make firearms sound like a quiet wet chicken fart.....they are still quite loud.

Here's how Fresno, CA is doing it:

Fresno Police: Guns, gang crackdown is paying off; Proposition 57 is not paying off

Fresno Police say a crackdown on crime in the new year is paying off.

Fresno Police Chief Jerry Dyer said Monday violent crime is down 15.2%.

Shootings are also down, 33 this year compared to 51 last year at the same time.

One big reason: more guns are being taken off the streets.

"I haven’t seen this level of effort in so many years,” Dyer said.

but let's keep them locked up. Letting gang members out on the streets is not a good idea:

Voters passed the measure in November of 2016, allowing for the release of inmates who committed so-called “non-violent” offenses.

"We have a weak legislature, weak governor who has allowed these laws to be passed. And we have an uninformed voter population in California that has also supported some very weak laws,” Dyer said. “It has made the job of a police officer that much more difficult."

So far, the California Parole board has granted early release to 25 inmates from Fresno County under Proposition 57.

Getting gangsters and illegal guns off of the street works. Go figure.

I've given up trying to correct them, and even the manufacturers and sellers use "silencer".

Possession of an illegal firearm should not ignored. And if it disproportionately targets minorities then so be it. As long as they are not prosecuting minorities while ignoring whites then it is fine. Just because minorities are more likely to break a law doesn't make the law racist or unjust (if that statement is even true).

This is what happens when people gain their firearms knowledge from Hollywood or clueless political talking points...
