Dem-ordered study to expose illegal online gun sales backfires | Fox News

It seems a few people tried to buy guns online from people in an effort to show illegal gun sales.
out of 62 attempts on the upper web no one took the bait. their accounts were reported and even banned
from some sites.

on the dark web they were able to buy some guns but the guns themselves were illegal and it is the dark web.
go figure.

so once again we prove that law abiding citizens are not the problem.

Only in the government could a 72 online purchase "study" take over two years. Not mentioned, of course, is what that (portion of the?) study cost the taxpayer.

The extreme inefficiency of the government was my initial reaction to this study as well...

Most illegal guns come from stolen weapons, straw purchases made by close friends/relatives or illegally made guns or exported guns from former soviet republic. In reality people trying to skirt the law do not want to be traced, or even caught with a gun that is illegal if they are a felon, often they want something cheap they can use and toss after.

Even if criminals are determined to murder, they may not be determined to be caught, anything that can trace it back to them, be it a seller, a serial number whatever tney want to avoid. Even in online purchases, if the gun is used in a crime, the seller who may be ties to record of sales may be contacted, who would describe who they sold it to and when, this leaves a trail even if a weak one to the criminal, while a straw purchase by a relative or friend would usually have a mutual alibi.

Hey Ludin. I know you know more about guns and gun laws than I, but I have a friend who was out hunting deer. During the course of his hunt, he came across an old rusty and dirt caked revolver lying there on the ground. Clearly had been lost and laid there for years.

He took it home with the idea if he could clean it up and make it a functioning weapon again. I would think that he should report the serial number to the police and the situation / condition and where he found it, just in case it may have been involved in a crime, and if not, I figure it'd probably end up being his.

Why red flags on this that you can think of?

I'd report it right away before investing any time in it

Yeah, finding a gun in a wooded or remote area? (assuming since you said they were hunting dear)...chances are that gun was used in a crime. Well...depending on the area of course. Find one in the area I live in and chances lean far more towards accidental loss.

yep I agree with turtle. He should report the gun right away.
If it was used in a crime and he has it then he can be charged with that crime.

Any time that you find a gun out in public call the police and report it immediately.

don't touch it and don't clean it you could be destroying evidence.

that is like one day I went out to my car and someone had stuck a crow bar in between the hood and the windshield.
I called the police for them to come look at it. the cop said there was nothing they could do.

obviously someone stashed it there so they would not get caught with it.

All good advice. Thanks.
