Anyone know of any laws that would prevent an up scaling of the Taurus judge concept to 20gauge? There HAVE been calibers in firearms that are rough equivalents (Ferguson rifle would be a 20gauge actually way back during the 1700s) like the 600 nitro express. So from a technical standpoint I’m thinking it would just be a matter of tinkering. But does anyone think there would be any legal problems?

Rifle caliber pistols are legal as are shotgun caliber pistols. You might want to consider having a good joint doctor on hand if you are planning on altering a weapon to regularly shoot 20 gauge shotgun shells from a handgun platform. What you CANT do is alter a rifle or shotgun to less than legal lengths without filing a certificate with the BATF (designated as "Any Other Weapon"). Not 100% certain but I think if you built any weapon without a rifled handgun barrel you would need to have the same paperwork on it.

Yes.

Firing a bullet has nothing to do with it. If a pistol bore is over .50 cal, then it is regulated by the NFA.
20 ga. pistols are available-usuall on the Mossberg 500 action, and are regulated as Any Other Weapons (AOW)
Not sure how good they would be for small game.
Several pistols are available in .410 without NFA regulation-as they have rifled barrels and are under .50 cal.

Well the idea would be to skirt existing SBS bs (hehe) so that one could own and use a short barreled 20 gauge legally. I like the idea of a 20 gauge home defense gun as it is usually smaller and still as lethal as a 12 at home defense ranges. And packs more punch than a handgun. Essentially it would open the door to legal “vault/bank guard” guns again. And then repeating shotguns at that size that can be taileored to quick shots with more punch than a .410 (which is plenty...but minimum shotgun id want to shoot something dangerous with would still be 20...and only the very pain intollerant 2 legged critters).

Such garbage. Do basically any bore size over 50 is outlawed? ****ing hell. Why are we worried about stupid things like trophy animals when we could use some more logical gun laws?

Not exactly outlawed but certainly requires a "special" (expensive and federal) license.

Have you looked at AOW shotguns? Tax stamps are only $5.

I mean...yes. But what is the fun in that? Bigger is better and legally purchased without hoops doubly so. :) This was a thought experiment. Stupid government. I guess I have to look into tax stamps. Yuck.

These folks seem to think much like you do. ;)

Do not know about revolvers, but at one point in time they used to sell what people nicknamed pocket rockets, usually derringer sized double barrels in either 45 acp or wait for it 12 guage. I have not seen them sold in quite a while and do not know if they are even still legal, but pistols up to 12 guage were made and sold at one point.

They still sell them,

That is not the same but close to what I remember, the ones they used to advertise in magazines looked like modded double barrel flare guns. The length of the barrel was the same as the shell, and they fired both barrels at once. Now other than not being dirt cheap and crude, that handgun does the same general things.

No stamp required for this fella....

Let the hand wringing begin..
Guns manufactured as shotgun caliber pistols (not modified) are sold as 'handguns'...just like rifle caliber pistols.

I have the Zastava M92 (with WAY too many mods on it) chambered in .223...and you are right...its just a 'handgun'. However...I also have an old 1936 Remington Model 870 that had a damaged barrel and I couldnt find a replacement. The barrel had been cut down to less than legal lengths. We talked to people about changing out the stock and putting on a birds head or pistol grip...but without the 'any other weapon' stamp due to the mod of an existing gun it would still be illegal. Finally found a guy in Tennessee to reforge the barrel. Glad I restored it. Its a sweet old gun.

I just see physical ones. Like that 45/70 revolver some pain freak invented.
