What two questions should I ask?

My sister sent me a link urging me to sign a petition to ban silencers and something else--I've already forgotten because I was irritated and deleted the e-mail. Every so often she brings up gun control and how it's "time, " and I dodge her every time because it's so obvious that she knows even less than I do about the various arguments, that she's just picking up on whatever Salon or The New Yorker have said.

She never has time to e-mail, but she e-mailed me the petition, so I know she's going to ask me over the weekend whether I've signed it. I would like to be ready with a couple of questions respectfully asked that reveal to her how little she understands about this issue (so she won't bug me anymore). And so I need help.

What questions should I ask her? For example, "Did you know that silencers don't really silence the sound of a gunshot?" What I don't want is to even try to discuss this issue with her; I just want her to hush up and let this go.

Thank you in advance.

Hearing is believing......

Ask her why they should be illegal. Then show her a YouTube vid of an actual "silencer". If possible, do with Bluetooth speakers, to really drive the point home.

Well, I didn't even know that, so thank you.

Just so you know, I have been corrected. The actual legislation apparently refers to them as "silencers". Maybe you could ask your sister how she believe "silencers" work, and then explain to her they do not actually "silence" the shots, but merely reduce the decibel level of the report. Furthermore, you could explain to her they wouldn't even work with the guns and bump stocks Paddock used. In fact, bump stocks are really not all that effective. They reduce your accuracy, and are notorious for jamming the weapon. Which is exactly what I understand happened in this case. Probably one of the reasons he used so many rifles.

No not at all. Hair brained assumptions based on a question? Yea that's asshat territory.

Anyway I suggest we return to the actual subject matter.

Yeah; it's beyond your capacity and I'm not going to argue with you about it.

I thought praising lying was pretty douchey, but I thought it was funny so I went with it a bit. But you, sir... you... go personal and thereby take the crown. Gratz.

After your move, my glorification of deception looks noble, righteous even. And so I'd like to thank you for making us all look good.

Oh please; stop insulting my intelligence. A first grader could have figured that out. There was nothing "personal" in it.

Missed it, huh?

Fair enough..."silencers" don't silence anything.

I don't miss it; I just didn't get the remark over stating the obvious.

Well, to even a first grade psychologist; you and your sister have issues. Secondly, you don't trust your decision making process or you wouldn't have started this thread.

Google "silencers"...

Your presumption astounds me, Jet.

You aren’t a psychologist, a gift given your penchant for invention. But here’s a tip: Sometimes a cigar is just a cigar (Sigmund Freud).

I’m not a gun enthusiast, and so I sought the informed opinions of those who are and who have a more sophisticated understanding. What I want to do is head off a conversation, and I know my sister well enough to know that if I ask her a couple of questions to which I am sure she won’t have the answer, she’ll abandon the topic. <<<This is the cigar.

You're complaining.

"Do you have a solutions for the gun violence epidemic in America?"

"What is the best brand of kevlar vest?"

Thank you all for your help. I'm just off the phone with my sister, and I did manage to head her off at the pass while suggesting that she check YouTube for a video on what a silencer sounds like--not silent at all--and by briefly discussing the reality of gun control policy in Chicago.

Of course, she next steered our conversation to the now-trending angry, white, and entitled male. I really should check out Salon and see what they've been saying this week on this.;)

Bias against silencers is like bias against hollow points...mostly held in ignorance.

gun banners hate the NRA. if the NRA wants a law repealed or changed, gun banners oppose it for that reason, alone
