What more beyond Background checks

Fifteen posts? Seems like so many more. You have regaled the board with all the proposed ideas/legislation that will not work. Do you have any thoughts as to remedies or do you take the position that these incidents are part and parcel of the type of society/country we live in. I am willing to wager that in the crowd Sunday night were supporters of the second Amendment. After the shock subsides, I would be interested in hearing if being on the receiving end changed anyone’s stance. Do you think there is/are solutions to stop/slow the frequency of mass gunfire casualties in the time we live?

I don't have a duty to find solutions for problems I didn't create but I know none of the bannerrhoid solutions would have done a damn thing. I also am not one of those people who have a frantic need to have an answer for every bad thing that happens.

Anyway aside from the hysteria that comes from both sides on this or people not having a clue what a semi-auto even is and people talking confiscation conspiracies ill state my piece.

I have always been fine with background checks. Had to have one for every gun I own beside my dads guns that became mine when he died. So universal background checks never bothered me. But also Im not under the impression that universal background checks are a "fix" for any crimes. They are a band-aid for a leaking damn because of the black market and illegal activity. Those are the things that need addressed, not me joe law abiding citizen.

1-The 2nd Amendment says nothign about home defense or hunting. It specifically addresses the right to keep and bear military grade firearms. 2-Who the hell told you Semi-automatic weapons were no good for home defense? Or hunting?

It says nothing about 'military grade' at all. It says 'well organized militia'. Remember, when it was written, the guns were black powered muzzle loaders. The concept of 'military grade' or not was not relevant.

Here is what gun nuts want. Nothing. They could care less if this happens every day
That's not accurate. Everyone feels horrible when these things occur, but a lot of us recognize that there isn't much anyone can do to stop a determined individual from committing horrific acts.

Militias are...............

If you are a member of the militia (and odds are...you are) then you are called on to augment the organized militia with arms you or morally obligated to own, keep in good working order, and be trained in their usage. That was the expectation of President Washington. For you to pretend the militia should not be armed with military grade firearms is wrong and completely discounts the actual words and stated intent of the 2nd Amendment. you may not LIKE it...but it is what it is.

He also bought 33 guns in the last 12 months, the majority of which were rifles. According to USA Today, apparently multiple rifle purchases do not have to be reported to the ATF, unlike multiple handgun purchases (you're more than welcome to fact check that for me). I find it interesting you kind of glossed over this point.

Perhaps if we had some way of knowing that a person was buying so many weapons, we could more closely monitor such an individual and discover they're also buying large amount of chemicals which are used in making explosives. And then maybe, maybe, we could have a better idea if this person plans to commit an evil act.

Would it have helped in this specific circumstance? Maybe, maybe not. I believe I read some place he paid cash for a large chunk of his expenditures...but maybe the next person wouldn't. Maybe we can stop the next person.

Would that be so bad?

Cool. So?

I'm pretty certain we're not trying to keep Stephen Paddock from killing any more people. I believe the goal is to minimize the ability of future persons to kill people.

Will we ever have a society where one person doesn't kill another with some weapon? Of course not. But, perhaps, in the meantime we can find a way to minimize the risk.

It depends what you do, I suppose. If you begin screeching and shilling like you are wont to do, then I'll probably either screech and shill about how you just want to see innocent people die and want to pray at the altar of the almighty gun, no matter how many children have to die for your religion. Or I'll leave the thread (most likely) and let you say all the stupid things you want to say.

If, however, you'd like to have a reasonable discussion about how increased gun control isn't about stopping or preventing any and all shootings, but rather to lessen the risk and minimize the damage of future shootings, if you'd like to provide the ways you think we could do a better job of keeping dangerous people from hurting innocents, then I'll be more than happy to have that conversation with you.

Which path would you like to take?
on another thread or perhaps this one I clearly noted that the multiple sales report only applies to handguns. the ATF and the other law enforcement agencies almost never prosecute FELONS who LIE on the form 4473 and have thus committed perjury. Yet we hear people saying the federal government should investigate people who DO PASS that check but buy lots of guns. Lets start using our brains people If the government doesn't have the resources to go and arrest FELONS who are trying to buy guns where are they going to get the resources (and the statutory power) to interrogate people who have clean records?

there is NOTHING in terms of additional laws that would have stopped this guy. maybe if someone had say noticed him smashing out his windows that might have been a clue something was up.

vegas has spend thousands of posts claiming all he wants is JUST A FORM. the killer filled out a form for most, if not all of the guns he used. He bought them openly, notoriously, and after passing background checks. so why is vegas whining when the law he wants to apply to every gun sale actually was in place with this guy? is it because he just wants to bash gun ownership or is he being dishonest as to what he really wants. I am surprised people sort of ignore this obvious disconnect

NO! Stop lying! We just don't give a damn if shootings happen every day! We're all horrible people!

1.) first part is unconstitutional, the second part MAYBE but you cant use the broad term of mental illness. It would have to be very specific and supported by the medical community.
2.) Well you just proved you have no idea what a semi-automatic is. NONE. FYI they are just fine for both.
3.) ? what are you calling a "shop sell"

I should clarify my 2nd point. I was talking about semi-auto rifles or 'assault weapons' such as AK47s or M16s.

Point 3: by shop sell, I mean you wouldn't be able to by them in Walmart, etc.

Honestly, this guy had his **** so well-planned put, there was no stopping him from doing what he did.

So instead of making an objective poll. You make a poll mocking everyone else who wants to talk about gun issues and who should or should not be allowed to buy one.

- I only want background checks on all sales- Why is this your first option when you said nobody really wants just background checks because they are all fake pro- 2nd amendment supporters?
- I want to ban those who pass checks from being able to own some guns- All the options in this poll are either mocking gun legislation or another way of saying "I want a gun ban."
- A ban on all firearms for private citizens- You say people are advocating for this when no one literally no one even the most liberal democrats in Congress say they want to infringe on the 2nd amendment and as long as you can own one single gun in this country. It isn't infringing on that right. Also you often equate that private citizens need what police officers and military personnel need.
- Other including I don't support background checks Can you tell me why someone (a non collector) should have 50 guns?

at what point does need have any relevance. your silly rant is based on the idiotic idea that the negative restriction on the federal government dissipates each time a citizen buys another gun. Can you tell me why I have a duty to justify to someone who is as ignorant about guns as you are why I or others want to own lots of guns?

More laws. Thatt'l fix it. Not a single one of those would have stopped the Vegas massacre.

Number 2 demonstrates your complete lack of knowledge of the subject. The vast majority of the firearms sold are semi autos.

Number 3 I have no idea what you are talking about.

you might want to explain your vote in the poll.

Mehinks he has no clue what a semi auto is.

Lots of that goes around banner circles. Saw a commentator on CNN a couple days ago launch into an explanation that full auto bullets were designed to explode on impact so as to cause more damage. Another Cali state Senator gave a speech that ghost guns used 30 caliber clip magazines. Just a couple that stood out for me.

one poster claimed we have to ban "machine gun ammo" and said that if we ban 223 we could stop these massacres. He's so ignorant he doesn't realize that the two most popular centerfire cartridges are 223/555 and 308

1.) well thats a HUGE difference from what you said. Im still dont thin you know what a semiauto is. theres nothing wrong with semi-autos for self defense or hunting.
But i see the path you are going down

So you want to ban these semi-autos:

But you are ok with older style rifles like this:

2.) buy what exactly at walmart? I dont care where guns are sold if done the proper way. Are you claiming that when Walmart sells guns they do it with zero regulation and licenses? If A place is incensed why does it matter their location?

You didn't answer my question. As someone who is TRYING to understand, why do you want to own 50 guns? What is the purpose of having 50 guns. I collect coins. I like collecting coins. Some people don't get it and that's fine by me. So I think it's just a weird fetish some people have. If I am wrong, then tell me why. Don't just refuse to debate someone because you think you know more than them on the subject.

serious competitive shooters-especially ones who compete in numerous events are constantly looking for an edge meaning they upgrade their gear constantly so I have dozens of competition pistols or the 40 years I have been a national class pistol shooter. I was on several All American and US international teams for shotgun so I have a couple dozen for the 5 different shotgun sports I was winning titles in (ISU Skeet, NSSA Skeet, NSCA and FITASC sporting clays, and Olympic trap). I also inherited about 25 or so hunting guns from my father and my late uncle.

I also used to be a 2200 level table tennis player. started competing at 16 through about 40 and still play. I have lots of table tennis paddles too. and I was a nationally ranked squash player-I gave most of my older racquets away to a local inner city youth program but I probably had dozens of those over the years since MANTA of Canada was giving me 6 a year when I was coaching and later HEAD did as well

It's about limiting their presence in the commercial arena. If people see them less in everyday life, perhaps they will think about them less.

the more someone wants to ban something when it comes to guns, generally the less likely they are to have a clue about the weapons they are complaining abut

I do not think the majority of people are competitive shooters and in such cases where strict gun laws were enacted I'm sure there would be ways you could apply for a special permit.

why should anyone have to apply for a permit to own more guns than someone as ignorant about gun laws as you are feels is necessary? the second amendment is a negative restriction on the federal government. that restriction does not somehow change based on how many times you have bought guns in the past.

You just said the only reason someone would need 50 guns other than being a collector (who I think should be registered as one) is because they are competitive shooters. Otherwise gun limits should be fine

He did not say "only reason". He gave his reason. Here's the list of mass shooters: US Mass Shootings, 1982-2017: Data From Mother Jones’ Investigation – Mother Jones

How many of them used more than say, three guns? Surely someone could own three guns, right?

You didnt answer all my questions
you want these banned

but not this

yes or no?
Why?

Are you claiming that when Walmart sells guns they do it with zero regulation and licenses? If A place is incensed why does it matter their location?

also to your comment about "It's about limiting their presence in the commercial arena. If people see them less in everyday life, perhaps they will think about them less." which is silly and totally illogical how well does your idea work for porn?

What about pets?
Alcohol?
Illegal drugs?

also if you are about limiting sells to ONLY gun stores, you honest believe that there just simply wont be a huge growth in gun stores just like states that regulate alcohol sells to state stores.
In Pa we have that and all it means is just about every community has a state store

the more someone wants to ban something when it comes to guns, generally the less likely they are to have a clue about the weapons they are complaining abut

In this case that seems to be true.
