Opinions please: lay down or run?

Apparently one concert goer had a reaction we haven't discussed here

I'm not so sure that I'd have had that reaction but I sure can't fault him for it!

That's after partying for 3+ days.

If I had to guess, I'd guess him to be the guy that donates anonymously every month to DP.

As for putting myself there hypothetically - I'd hope to maintain enough wits to keep tabs on any loved ones with me... yell "RUN" and simultaneously run towards perceived cover ASAP!

I have heard the acronym F.E.A.R. described two different ways:
1. False Evidence Appearing Real. 2. F**k Everything And Run!

The chaos, drama and insanity of that particular situation makes the 2nd description more appropriate.

After three days partying, you think you are bulletproof....
Or has a good idea the shooter is not aiming and cannot hit any selected targets on full auto.
His choice may be just as safe as any other.
One article I read said he had a .308 A-10, the report on the audio did not sound like a .223,
and the rate of fire sounded too slow. The A-10 I think has a slower cycle time.

I heard people in the media (so-called experts) and people being interviewed that were in the crowd in LV during the shooting last nite.

The main recommendation seemed to be that the best chance of survival was to hunker down flat on the ground. In the open.

I'm sure I didnt hear all recommendations but would this really be better than remaining a moving target and moving towards cover or even concealment?

Hitting the deck is probably best if the shooter is ground level, when they are 320ft above you? Laying down makes a bigger target.

The best option is almost certainly to find a dead body, lay down, and pull it over you.....though I suspect we dont want to go there, and that I will be accused of being a scumbag for bringing up the idea...even though over the years it has been used successfully quite often.

That's the thing about following truth though, it is often unsavory.

Centerfire rifle loads would likely go thru the corpse, making 2 corpse's .

When is the last time you bought a beer at a concert? If I spent $20 on a beer I'd hold on to it for dear life too!

sitting duck comes to mind to drop to the ground during such an ordeal for moving targets are harder to hit. But to those folks involved at the time had no idea that the shooter was perched on the 32nd floor of a hotel across the street shooting at them from above at that time. It is real easy for those not involved in such an ordeal to throw out advice but when you are at ground zero watching people being shot the natural thing would be to fall to the ground.

that can be true or not true

when someone is spraying large quantities of bullets into a contained area, your best bet is to get behind some heavy cover if the person is actually picking victims and aiming at them, running might trigger him targeting you. if the person is merely spraying into the crowd-like this guy APPARENTLY WAS, running might be better.

It seems very non-intuitive to me to just lay down but I wondered if they were saying it because if you were 'playing dead,' the shooter would not focus on you.
i think he was spraying the masses not targeting individuals and picking them off

Thanks folks. I pretty much felt that laying down would be the 'sitting duck' option and didnt care for it. As a shooter, I am trained to move and shoot at the same time. I think the moving target is the harder shot, even tho it may also draw attention.

But so much of what they said, even the experts, in the beginning, indicated laying down. Now I've seen at least one morning show have experts in on what to do during an active shooter event and running, escaping, looking for concealment and cover, are foremost. Next, if you cannot, is to go somewhere (a room usually) and 'harden' that to entry.

If it had been semi-auto fire I would definitely agree that a moving target is harder to hit. When it is automatic fire (or fire of comparable speed) then the shooter can simply lay down fire in your path and allow you to run right into it. All the options available to those caught out in the open were crappy ones.
