Define terms

I believe the term "assault rifle" came about in Nazi Germany. Strumgureher or something (sp)

yep, at the time Germans had several infantry weapons. The main one was the Mauser 98 8mm battle rifle, a bolt action rifle that had been in service since before WWI. they also had sub machine guns that fired a pistol cartridge-mainly 9mm. In the vicious street fighting in Stalingrad German infantry would also run into fixed Soviet positions before a machine gun could be brought up to suppress the defenders' shooting at them so a flamethrower team or engineers could destroy the fixed position. The "assault rifle" was an attempt to provide line infantry with a weapon that could be used to engage individual targets up to 400 M or so like a main battle rifle but could also be used to provide fully automatic suppressive fire so that a few soldiers could take the place of a less maneuverable crew served machine gun like a MG42.

This concept caught on because with modern artillery and air support, the days of infantry engaging other infantry at extended ranges diminished and the weight savings and recoil reduction of the "assault rifle" was a big plus. In Vietnam, the average ammo load for a marine carrying the last MBR the USA fielded, the M14, was 8 20 round magazines. For the Army, that issued the M16, it was 9 thirty round magazines. I have extensively fired the M16, the M14 and the MI Garand as well as the last major European MBR-the FN-FAL. firing 200 rounds of 762 NATO is fatiguing if done in a 2 hour period, while shooting an M16 200 times is not

if it doesn't have the giggle switch its not an assault rifle

applying "assault" to any semi auto rifle, pistol or shotgun is nothing more than the bannerrhoid movement attempts to demonize such firearms by getting the slow witted to think that those firearms are intended to be used for "criminal assault"

Love that term, but in reality it is more of go broke switch, heck my Niece still manages to drop my net worth by a couple of hundred every time she visits even without the switch. She would do this to me every weekend if I did not put her off some, my fault for getting her hooked.

Correct, it is all BS terminology to take away our rights per the Constitution.

I dig fossils on the river behind a shooting range, every time I here a volley I joke to my pal (guess cal) And say "30 dollars, downrange" etc:)

Correct

The previous three infantry rifles for the US military had barrels of 24", 24" and 22", respectively. The 20" M16 barrel is shorter. I would say "typically" shorter, just to account for the odd exception.

Why is 5.56mm "too small"? It's certainly intermediate between the .30ish caliber round used in previous infantry rifles, and more powerful than the pistol rounds typically used in SMGs.

I'd say it was made up, by the Germans in WWII, but not to label something ignorantly. That would be the term "assault weapon".

If Miller was truly enforced, then yes, we should have access to selective fire rifles. Personally, I've no need or desire for one, but I'd be happy if the NFA went away in its entirety.
Dang I got one right, even a broken clock is right twice a day.

Sorter is not carbine short, but then that is another argument, What is a Carbine.

Not too small just not what some would call an intermediate size, a pumped up 22 is still a 22. I like the round but I would call it a small round, many states will not even allow them for deer hunting. Silly but they do not see them as humane.

True, but then again what was the caliber, 9mm.

I agree, I do not actually want a select fire, I can burn through ammo fast enough using my finger and can actually hit what I am shooting at far better using my sites on the target than simply pointing it in a general direction which is often the case when people use a select fire function. I agree the BS laws need to be trashed, funny thing, our GOP Congress and President do not seem to be in a rush to get er done.

If only it were that cheap, maybe me by myself with a 22 rifle or handgun and I can keep it there, now the .44 Mag is a different story, one box of 50 rds cost more than that.

Off topic, do you find some good ones? I love fossils, science and history are my passion, maybe you can make some money there, but I assume you know that already. Post some pics if you can some time, will probably need to post them on another thread though.

Or black powder or bows, I am a novice with the first and well healed in the second.

Cool Beans! You are going get rich, really. Will check it out, you have been busy here haven't ya, glad you joined here.
Me too, this forum is light years, better.

Not looking to get rich, I don't think I would be happy, that way. Yes, I am busy, until the river rises, then you must wait until the dry season. I hope for another 40 days.

So, who's dick is longer? Enquiring minds want to know.
That would be us Air Force folks. I was in a MAC squadron. We would pick up the 82nd and 101st, then open the doors and let them jump. It was really hard work. :)

101 hasn't jumped from planes in a long time last I checked, ol' timer. I suppose they stay qualed.

why the waste of bandwidth, Eco's credentials are pretty well known here and no one disputes them

So where's a newbie to find these credentials. He is willing to throw shade on vets who earned the 'parachutist badge', but when questioned as to why he feels superior, he has no answer. "I was infantry." All others are suspect.....and why is it you feel the need to speak up for your buddy?

Okay, what gave away my old fart status?

You may be right. Which were the ones with an Eagle on their patch? They were the only ones I saw jump from any plane I was on. Mostly, the planes I was assigned to carried and dropped pallets and vehicles. We would land after the air strip was secured to unload the helicopters nicely.

Explain to someone, who has a rudementary knowledge of firearms, precisely what constitutes an "assualt weapon" or "weapon of war" and what makes them more dangerous than other firearms. They have never seen an AR or M4/M16 nor do they have access to the internet....

I don't know about precise, but I think this is what most people think of...

Aside from quals (once every few months), I don't think the Screaming Eagles (101st Abn) have jumped since Vietnam. They still wear an airborne tab but they're air assault (helicopters). Helis probably get all the action these days anyway, but they're airborne via heli.

Well, they jumped at least once since Vietnam. We dropped them over Panama in 1979. Then they, or someone with them built a landing strip. When we landed, they helped unload the helicopters from the planes. They loaded into the helicopters and took off. We loaded into busses and were taken to a hotel until they were done with their games.

I was most amused by the way the locals started scavenging the airstrip before the last plane went wheels up.

Securing air strips is still the primary mission of airborne units. I'm pretty sure that was the 82nd. There were mustard stains in my battalion. I suppose wiki would say.

We we were in Honduras, we could drive a 5 ton dump truck full of garbage in a loop around the designated dump site and it would be empty at the end of the loop without actually having to dump the trash.
