The supporters of the gun range hope to provide a place for local police officers to train, create job opportunities for veterans, establish a place for the community to learn best shooting practices-- all while making a generous contribution to the local economy.

The bar attached to the range will only be available to top-tier members, according to backers, and if they drink, they cannot shoot.

While I'm decidedly pro-gun, pro-business and pro-alcohol this may well not be a great idea.

I know there might be a bottle or two in the campground at some cowboy events or other organized, multi-day shoots but those are short term associations. Putting a bar at the range makes it kind of a hang out and affords just a bit too much comfort between the booze and the guns. The most dangerous part of gun handling is getting too comfortable and doing something stupid. This setup might might not cause any stupid but it sure would create a breeding ground for it. I don't think you'd find me being a member there.

Sounds pretty fun to me, drinking games + shooting games are a whole lot of fun. I can see why this shouldn't be a business but yall shouldn't knock drinking and shooting.

Yeah, that's not a very good idea. Like, at all.

It's a minor distinction, I suppose. I wouldn't be the least bit opposed to grabbing a beer on the way home after a session that the range. That's never been an issue for me because I left the range already and transitioned from "range" mentality to "beer" mentality. It may well not be the same for everyone but I kind of need that transition.

If I want to combine booze and sports I can always go bowling or play darts or pool.

All those "hold mah beer and watch this!" stuff comes to mind.

The next thing you know we will have bars with parking lots to encourage drinking and driving. ;)

See, that the "getting too comfortable with the combination" thing again!

Not a good idea at all at all.

Guns and booze don't mix; just watch any cowboy movie with a bar-gunfight from the 40's on up... ;)

The only way I can see that working, is if you get your hand stamped when you enter the bar, and you aren't allowed to enter the range with your hand stamped. And, there will be someone that will figure out how to get all the ink off and go into the range anyway.

Just too many bad things come to mind. Maybe they can name the place Darwin's Bar and Gun Range.

yeah lets have a bar that serves people driving Formula One race cars too.

dumb dumb dumb. Drinking NEVER mixes with shooting

Play at your own risk.

what exactly is the point you are trying to make?

That while a bar and gun range is way too much liability for a business to have that mixing guns and alcohol is not the crazy thing the some people are making it out to be

well in most states its a felony to be drinking while packing or carrying a firearm

Thanks for the heads up. I live in the next village- hadn't heard about it.

Guess I'll be showing up at the next village meeting!

in public, again a liability issue. I dont think many(any?) make it a felony to do so on private property

I belonged to a club with a social side the ended every practice or competition with a gathering in the clubhouse. People were welcome to bring their own food and drink and beers were also for sale to those who wanted. Consumption of alcohol during any event would get expulsion. In more than a few years of membership there was not on single "event". I might add handling of firearms in the clubhouse was not allowed either. People really can behave sensibly and it does not take long to find those who cannot if they should exist.

My local flying club has a bar. Think about that.

NOT a great idea?

How'd you figure THAT?

What do you see wrong with it? I assume you would have no problem with a flying club or racing club having a bar.

I realize it varies from state to state but my personal opinion is drinking/carrying laws should be similar to drinking/driving laws. If, for example, you can legally drive with a BAC of less than .08 then that should be the cut-off for carrying as well. So if I owned this particular business I would require my patrons to pass a breathalyzer before entering the range.
