Looks like the Washington Post is at it again! The story they recently posted is very misleading and causing anti gun nuts to go mad. For one, they are still spreading the false narrative that the AR-15 is an "assault rifle." You gotta love that those two words have been demonized and strike fear into the hearts of uneducated souls. Secondly, their story makes it seem like the raffle is being held at the school and the student will receive the rifle. When in fact, its an outside raffle that will donate the proceeds to the school for party purposes lol. Story is below.

"Put this in the you-can’t-make-up-this-stuff category: One of the prizes at a fundraising raffle in the New Caney school district in Texas is an AR-15 assault rifle."

Look at the play of words. FAKE.

I'm not surprised that WaPo is doing this...it seems to be the latest tactic used by all the Mainstream Media when reporting stories that their leftist agenda doesn't like. Even though they explain that this raffle is being conducted by an outside non-profit organization, their headline is designed to grab the anti-gun nut's attention.

Like most Mainstream Media stories nowadays, I put this in the category: Clickbait.

The source of this story...KHOU from Houston TX was more honest about the story...

"A concerned parent asked us to look into a flyer advertising an AR-15 semi-automatic rifle being raffled off to raise money for Project Graduation, a charity supporting New Caney ISD students."

Re: "Texas school holds raffle for AR-15 assault rifle."

If we're being honest, I've seen some crappy articles from WaPo in the past, but this article alone will never make me visit their site again. It's painfully obvious they are bending the truth for their agenda.

Re: "Texas school holds raffle for AR-15 assault rifle."

Everyone knows WAPO is a liberal slanted paper, but you have to distinguish between news reports and opinion article. What you linked is a Blog post that appears on their website. If you read the opinion pages of any newspaper, you are going to find some very slanted coverage.

By the way, the title of the article is now:

"AR-15 assault rifle being raffled to raise money for Texas high school graduation party"

which is pretty accurate except for calling it an assault rifle instead of an assault weapon.

an assault weapon is a term that is a lie itself. Assault-within the meaning of the military term-requires select fire option. Bannerrhoids want sheeple to think of "criminal assault"

Re: "Texas school holds raffle for AR-15 assault rifle."

This is such a silly story all the way around.

No firearm was raffled with school participation. The auction was a private affair with the proceeds donated.

Arguing over what the weapon was called is as silly as attempting to make it appear the school had involvement in the raffle of a weapon.

Both were disingenuous.

assault rifle-a select fire weapon of carbine size-firing an intermediate cartridge (between pistol cartridge power and full battle rifle cartridge [like a 8mm or 30-06]). Select fire is a necessary requirement for such a rifle since one of the purposes of an assault rifle for infantry use is to allow several infantry soldiers armed with assault rifles to provide suppressing fire in the absence of a crew served machine gun, when other members of the assault team attempt to destroy the fixed position with explosives or flame throwers.

Eugene Stoner invented the AR-15 in 1959. The assault rifle was created as a military weapon — not meant for sport or defense.

Stoner's family spoke out:

Our father, Eugene Stoner, designed the AR-15 and subsequent M-16 as a military weapon to give our soldiers an advantage over the AK-47. He died long before any mass shootings occurred. But, we do think he would have been horrified and sickened as anyone, if not more by these events.

Re: "Texas school holds raffle for AR-15 assault rifle."

Where are you guys getting these definitions from?

"any of various intermediate-range, magazine-fed military rifles (such as the AK-47 ) that can be set for automatic or semiautomatic fire."

An AR-15 does not meet the definition. Its an semi automatic rifle designed for civilian use.

Re: "Texas school holds raffle for AR-15 assault rifle."

The AR-15 is not an automatic rifle - it is a semi-auto rifle and fires one round per trigger pull just like this one:

Hm...I am sure if you explained that to the families of the victims of Orlando, then they would understand the importance of not viewing guns like a Sig to be an "assault rifle". Priorities right?

why should I do that? putting the blame on the weapon is the sort of crap bannerrhoids do. A real libertarian would never buy into such nonsense. I have that very model of SIG sitting right next to my desk here. Its not an assault rifle since its worthless for a military assault. Bannerrhoids want slow witted sheeple to think those weapons were designed for "criminal assault"

Re: "Texas school holds raffle for AR-15 assault rifle."

its worthless trying to provide facts to hard core BM members. Remember the BM is the most dishonest political movement in the USA and is not even honest about its real motivations.

Excuse me for trying the impossible. ;)

My post was an attempt to inform those non-BMs who may read this thread as to the differences in appearance which do not affect the ballistic capability or basic functions of a magazine fed semi-auto rifle. If a rifle looks like a fully automatic military rifle then it is now called "military style" or an "assault" rifle even if it functions exactly like a "sporting" or "hunting" rifle. If it is a bolt action rifle and has a scope then it may now be elevated to "sniper rifle" status to make it seem much more scary. ;)

Re: "Texas school holds raffle for AR-15 assault rifle."

The US government, in 1963, with a Democratic Congress and a Democratic president, sold 260,000 military grade, semiautomatic, magazine fed, intermediate caliber carbines to civilians for $20, including shipping, with no background checks. Mass shootings ensued, no wait, nothing happened.

Re: "Texas school holds raffle for AR-15 assault rifle."

Hey! You own a military assault rifle according to the very definition you have posted. You need to get rid of it before it kills someone... That and to put your money where your mouth is...

Oddly enough, he actually happens to own one of those killing machines....But of course he does not believe anyone that does not already has one, should... Go figure...

Apparently you missed that word. Would you like a definition of it or do you know?

So he designed a better AK47 which the military needed. Now which part of that makes anything unacceptable to civilian use?

There are many lunatics out there some of the worst are those who poison the minds of others with lies.

See I can write as much unevidenced idiotic assertions as you can.

I'm amazed that people who want strict gun control or possible bans have been misinformed.

That in no way refutes the fact that the AR15 was specifically designed as a military combat weapon.

Re: "Texas school holds raffle for AR-15 assault rifle."

The AR in AR 15 Stands for ArmaLite

Before we dive into the history of the modern AR 15 Rifle, we need to look the “AR” part. AR does not stand for Assault Rifle. Or Automatic Rearming. Or even Apoplectic Ruin. It is a product naming convention from the company that invented it, ArmaLite. In fact, there were a number of rifles with “AR” names, like the AR-1, AR-5, AR-7, AR-10, AR-16 and AR-17.

Let’s do a quick review of AR15 Rifle history what got us from conception to where we are today.

Eugene Stoner responsible for early development of the AR 15 rifle.ArmaLite was founded as a division of Fairchild Engine and Aircraft Corporation. While most people equate the AR 15 Rifle with military variants, the company was actually founded with the goal of developing civilian market guns using modern materials and manufacturing technologies.
The initial business plan called for establishing some success with commercial products, then using that momentum to get into the government and military business.

Eugene Stoner, a former marine and independent weapons designer, becomes Chief Engineer of ArmaLite. Stone meets George Sullivan, Chief Patent Counsel for Lockheed Aircraft Corporation. Sullivan has a super-sized bee in his bonnet about the possibilities of using advanced (at that time) materials like plastics and aluminum alloys in radical new weapons designs. Hold that thought…

I just report the facts.

Nope, you just distort the facts. The AR-15 is a semi-automatic rifle - simply dropping the "semi-" does not make it fire differently.
