Open carry allows me to educate people on gun laws.

This is a great point, I too agree with the premise of this thread and will add my useless $0.02

My friend asked me about how I plan to handle my (real)firearms around my daughter.

I told him, educate her to the fullest on what they do and how they affect Humans.

With that being said, we have a lot of "airsoft" guns, my friend said he would start dumping them, I asked him why? He said its dangerous around the house with the kids and collecting dust. I told him I have them in arms reach and easily accessible. He said wait what about your daughter? I told him I have already introduced her to them so she knows what they are, she touches them all the time to get familiar with them (my daughter is 16months old btw) By introducing them to her early, she is a baby but not STUPID. If a baby can understand what is good and bad a child/adult can do the same way if introduce to them responsibly.

You want to know what, when she opens my cabinet doors with them hanging on the door, she bypasses them like they are not there, and goes straight for the towels, shampoo, tooth brushes. Why is that? Because she has lost interest. She knows what it is and understand its not something to play with because it dangerous. Again she is a baby yes, but NOT Stupid....

If people were introduce to firearms and firearms safety from an early age, the temptation to "touch" something illicit would be less. Curiosity would be squashed and they would learn consequences early on rather than at the time of an "accident" like shooting their friend because they didnt know how to handle the fire arm.

You tell a kid dont touch the stove, guess what they will touch. You tell a kid dont touch a firearm... guess what....

but if you tell the kid why you dont touch the stove, and how it can hurt you or someone else, their little brains will process it.....same with a firearm....... Its all about proper education.... not banning

I've done kids-and-guns-in-house twice now.

Guns are locked up or on-person when child is small (<4). I started Son#1 learning about guns at age 3, by shooting a 2liter water jug with a shotgun and explaining the gun had no brain and would destroy anything in front of it. I let him shoot BB guns and 22s under supervision from age 4.

To remove the taboo, I told all the kids if they wanted to look at or handle a gun, or go out and shoot it (under close supervision), just tell me and we'd do it. Once their curiosity was satisfied in a safe way, the allure was gone and they were no more attractive than my power tools about which the rules were the same.

As my father did for me, I drilled the kids incessantly on the Four Rules of safety until they could recite them in their sleep. They saw animals I'd shot and watched me clean them and knew without a doubt guns kill living things dead and are no joke, and there is no "load saved game" do-over once you're dead.

Training progressed as maturity level progressed for each child. My family viewed it like skill at driving a vehicle, or using power tools... something every youth should learn before adulthood.

My extended family (24 people) has had zero injuries from firearm accidents over the past 60 years...

This is exactly my plan....... Live Firearms are in safekeeping, (locked up)

Airsoft guns are in arms reach treated like a toy like my drones, power tools, golfclubs etc. No different the only difference is like you I explain the consequences to her. Its funny, people say she is a baby. Yes she is a baby but she is not STUPID. They know what is good and bad, like dont go into the toilet, dont eat crap off the floor, Dont touch a firearm.....pretty simple... if a baby can do it an adult can.....

with that being said, the 4 fundamentals of firearm safety are DRILLED, into my wife and soon my daughter. All my friends that come over are drilled with this as well... wives, kids and husbands. Its not a matter if they like it or not, its a matter of responsibilities and consequences. So if they ever come in my house and handle my firearms, they follow those 4 simple rules.....

Exactly like you stated, satisfy their curiosity, and the allure is gone...... I think she likes my golf clubs more than my guns..... I bet I could leave them on the ground all spread out and she will go after my drones and clubs, more than my guns.....I wonder why?? LOL!

None of it matters if the Victim isn't aware of their surroundings ... there aren't many Quick-Draw artist in the world.

... and if I'm 10 feet away and I go Bent Elbow ... you better not have a Deep holster.

Awareness and mental readiness is the sine-qua-non of all self-defense, period.

But the fast draw is rarely a factor in actual self-defense scenarios. I (and others) have posted dozens of videos on DP showing where armed criminals have "had the drop" on people and still got shot up by a crafty concealed carrier who waited for the right moment to act.

Tactics and judgement > fast-draw, most of the time.

If that's what you want to do, that's fine. I'm sure you were reasonably armed and well-behaved, not like the showboaters and confronters that give us a bad name.

Me, I wouldn't do it. I carry concealed, rarely tell anyone I have a carry permit, and even more rarely admit to being currently armed. I've been among fellow work-buddies who were talking about how they had CWP and carried on the job, and I smiled and nodded and agreed that was wise and said absolutely nothing about my own personal armed status or permit.

And I live in a VERY pro-gun, pro-self-defense state. Well, "very" for a state on the eastern seaboard, even in the South.

My reasoning is, what nobody knows can't hurt me. If my workplace currently doesn't have a rule against employees carrying, my line of reasoning is keep mouth shut and don't rub it in their face... making a known issue of it might result in a change for the worse.

Immediate family and close friends know I carry. Nobody else needs to know. I'd rather it come as a surprise if the need to draw it arises.

I do have something of a reputation in the immediate neighborhood, due to a couple of incidents in the past (and small-town folks talk), which has its uses but I prefer not to broadcast my status to strangers.

I know that you feel otherwise and that's fine, as I said I'm sure you OC in a reasonable and responsible manner. I'm fine with legal OC, but it isn't something I'd do very often at all.

This is how I Open Carry (and Yes that is me.)

Looks familiar. Back in my LE days I packed a S&W Model 13 with Pachmayr grips.

This is pretty slick-watch how the robbery victim uses another person for "concealment" to draw. Almost perfect tactics

Educating people with the correct information is very rewarding. It is a pity we do not spend more time on public education and help prevent them from throwing their safety away on a false promise. That is probably the most vital thing we could possibly do.

I think you could make a case for that in regards to any cause, not just OC.

Correctly "used" the woman as Cover while he got the Gun out.

concealment-prevents the opposition from seeing what you do

Cover-prevents the opposition from hitting you with gun fire

she was mainly being used to conceal his draw since the bad guy was not firing or attempting to fire at him

Cover can be concealment but concealment is often not cover

Any excuse to attack gun owners. The person you are talking too does not understand firearms training or laws from what it seems.

It's a legitimate tactical maneuver

Freaking Awesome textbook well trained maneuver..... I hate to say it this way.... but if this was a Michael Bay, Film that was badass.... Ok sorry had to get that out of my system as this was real life.

I am sorry that a loss of life happened, but this is the consequences of doing something you should not be doing PERIOD. And the consequences mean you could get shot.

With that, this is textbook and you cant ask for a more textbook outcome, realistically though I will admit that this is a 1/10 scenario that goes this well. The likely hood of this natural maneuver and training does not happen overnight but years of experience and learning to handle your emotions at the peak height of adrenaline.

For an out come like this, as agreed with many premises of this thread. Is proper education from the beginning and proper training from the beginning. If we teach people and our children from a young age how to handle and conduct themselves...... these textbook situations would likely increase from 1/10 to heck I would be happy 5/10...... This was on off duty policy officers, I know of on duty police officers that probably would not been able to conduct themselves in the same manor, and these guys are "TRAINED" to do so......

I am not advocating, street justice, but again... proper education and training, so needless life and responsible actions are taken.....

this should happen a lot more often in the USA and other areas. I would love to see everyone who robs an innocent person at gunpoint being shot down. within a year violent crime would be almost non existent Victims killing their attackers is the ideal solution to violent crime.

1) it wipes out that very violent minority of criminals who cause most of the vicious crimes

2) it saves the people and the government all sorts of money

3) it empowers other potential victims

4) it provides a strong lesson to would be scum bags
