Congress Says, Let the Mentally Ill Buy Guns [W:100]

Re: Congress Says, Let the Mentally Ill Buy Guns

What I've figured out is that you're not qualified to state that medicated schizophrenics should be able to buy guns and ammunition.

since there is no ban on them buying guns, you are not being truthful-once again

Re: Congress Says, Let the Mentally Ill Buy Guns

As a free American "law abiding citizen" I am eminently qualified to express reservations based on reasonable conclusions and expect representative action on schizophrenics and gun ownership.

YOU have no such qualifications to override a reasonable public concern in favor of what you think the second amendment says, so that you et al can have any gun you want for any purpose you want, to carry anywhere you want

reasonable public concerns don't trump constitutional rights. You have NEVER EVER expressed ANYTHING reasonable concerning the limitations on our rights

So, since you are in no position to make informed credible decision on whether or not a paranoid schizophrenic should be able to buy guns and ammunition, MY hesitations on that issue are socially responsible.

Your arguments are failing pathetically. 1). My state's statutes declare that I am credible to assess acute mental health crises and petition for a restriction of liberties of people who I deem to be likely to harm themselves or others as a result of their mental illness. 2). Who said anything about paranoid schizophrenia? That's just one subtype. 3) No matter how socially responsible you personally declare your personal hesitations to be, we're all lucky that our legal system doesn't operate the way your brain does.

And people's rights ARE determined by people's criteria every day

No, people's rights are not granted by arbitrary personal criteria, they exist to begin with and can only be deprived or suspended through established legal/statutory procedures, and on a case by case basis, not on the sweeping basis of a diagnosis.

Your "Muslim" thing is just stupid and tells us more about your thinking that only reinforces mine.

Being Muslim is a personal characteristic that does not and cannot serve as a basis of depriving anyone of rights. Same is true of any mental health diagnosis in and of itself. It's a characteristic that does not justify deprivation or suspension of rights. Your language directly implied any and all people with a schizophrenia label should therefore have no gun rights. Nothing about your thinking is reinforced by anything.

The only conclusion that can be reached is two fold: you don;t know what you're talking about, as you have zero credibility as a "health care professional",

Mental health professional, and it's clear to everyone here but you that I do know what I'm talking about, and that you don't.

AND you believe that paranoid schizophrenics should be able to walk into walmart and buy guns and ammo.

They should, in every single individual case that does not meet sufficient existing statutory criteria for legal, public safety and mental health professionals to interfere. Those criteria already exist, and when they are met, those professionals absolutely can and do interfere with such people attempting to do such things. When those criteria are not met, then yes the person can go and purchase guns and ammunition and no one can rightfully interfere.

Re: Congress Says, Let the Mentally Ill Buy Guns

You're right, and neither are you, nor is the medical director of a psychiatric hospital, nor is the director of the American Psychiatric Association, or anyone else. People's rights and liberties are not granted based on a set of anyone's criteria, they already exist and are only suspended via statutory due process on an individual case-by-case basis.

We don't prohibit all Muslims from possessing guns by virtue of their religion or because some of them are religious radicals, and we're not going to prohibit all people with histories of certain diagnoses from possessing guns by virtue of the fact some are dangerous when their symptoms are severe.

You're shooting from the hip and it's not at all compelling.

I'm pretty sure the point of origin is lower down than the hip.

And have you figured out if you are?
