Most Gun Deaths are Suicides

You know what that means, right? Economic reasons and the stupidity of this goddamned system creating the situation that results in suicides. Not guns.

Are you claiming that no use of a gun is positive, that target shooting, plinking, hunting, competition and self defense aren't positive uses of a legal item?

An argument can be made that guns used for suicide is perhaps a positive. I'd have to think that over, at the very least.

So if cultural issues come into play, we can count on not having the US compared to any other countries in regards to gun control?

Given that just about any adult can legally purchase a firearm and ammunition to fire a single shot, what laws would have to be passed to take away "easy access"?

It's probably too late now, given that guns take 100 years to decay and you can make them in a garage. But that's no more futile than the war on weed and meth labs, so i say let's give it a shot! Hundreds of thousands of federal agents and local cops who can confiscate everything you have even without conviction (asset forfeiture), for-profit prisons so there's always room to grow, some well places "this is your brain on guns" commercials and stories of 10 year olds massacring their families with guns (no need to fake this unlike the pot ads), and 20 year mandatory minimums should do the trick to selectively bag a couple million of the gun nuts

I've asked that question before, in other forums. Do we have the moral right to prevent suicides? Is the government empowered to do so? There's no easy answer.

more like too rare (self defense) or easily replaced (use paint balls or laser tag instead of bullets for competition) to justify the negatives

We don't have that many federal agents, and local cops aren't going to participate. After a few hundred federal agents are killed, they'll be less likely to participate, either.

Got any actual solutions to address suicide?

You really don't know much about firearms and their uses, do you. All I see is "hates them precious"

Some are killed in the drug war too. There's plenty of grunts who will turn their backs on the 'noble' gun cause for a paycheck. We can even yank say half of the military bases in zimbabwe and **** to pay for it, reducing the # of useless guns even more!

Suicides will go down once these guns disappear, just like weed and meth labs has disappeared, don't worry

I forgot to mention bow and arrow instead of gun for hunting in the replacement category

Don't know much about hunting, either. Or posse comitatus. Or the miltary mindset.

Are you just taking the piss?

In Canada, you can't get a firearms permit if you've been treated for mental health within the past 5 years. When you take the firearms course here (mandatory for the permit), there is a big section on suicide prevention.

I think people forget that the biggest danger of guns is to gun owners, for this reason. A lot of people who attempt suicide and fail end up being glad that they didn't succeed at it. With guns, there success rate is really high and people don't survive to get the help they need.

OP, your mocking of gun suicides is really despicable.

Over 21,000 of the total 32,000 plus gun deaths--basically 66%---were suicides.

Winning!

Good reason not to ban guns, IMO. Idiots mostly hurting themselves is no reason to push for more laws.

I have lost two friends to sucide. In each case alcohol is what killed them. Ones alcohlism drove him to suicide and he decided to kill himself with a drug-alcohol cocktail. The other became depressed, got himself drunk and decided to throw himself onto the road into the path of a truck. In neither case was a firearm involved.
My enjoying a cold beer is no more responsible for their deaths than my right to own fireams is responsible for those that chose suicide by firearms. Anyone who thinks otherwise were not taught about personal responsibility by their parents. My empathy starts at the cause of the act and not the method. That is were anyone truly concerned with suicide deaths should start.

Define too rare. This should be interesting. Just out of curiosity, do you feel you personally could own a firearm responsibly without harming others or yourself?

Yet 120,000,000 gun owners do not seem to run into that issue.

Do you somehow perceive my statement in the above quote as being opposed to suicide or encouraging banning guns to someone determined to commit it? If so, please point it out.
The "winning" remark looked like sarcasm, indicating your whole post was sarcastic and that you support banning guns so as to reduce suicide.

too rare as in the # of cases of actual self defense is dwarfed many fold by the # of murders and even accidental deaths, and avoidable suicides

as for me, i don't have situational depression, don't have anger issues, so who knows. But i would have a hard time aiming due to hand tremors, if by some miracle i was actually in imminent danger that only a gun could prevent

Exactly right, if we did a (much) better job weeding out the mentally disturbed and anger prone, i might reconsider the need for a gun ban. But the NRA wants every maniac to have an automatic, to...protect themselves other maniacs who the NRA has also given automatics? Is that the twisted logic here?

When we try that in America people just stop seeking treatment for mental health so they can still get a gun, making the problem worse.

Maniacs can get an automatic whether they're banned or not.

A good and proper civilian need for a machine gun is to repel gang drive-by shootings. The NRA has a long history of supporting minorities from thugs starting when the NRA armed Blacks against the KKK. The NRA will continue its mission of protecting equality by advocating the defence of innocent people targeted by gangs.

Irrelevant as laws are not passed to stop crime or stop insane people. Laws are passed to identify what is legal and what is not. To point out that some one might disobey a law is a reason not to have a law is of course ridiculous.

How many Defensive Gun Uses are there each year? No matter how many, it's not sufficient reason to ban and confiscate guns.

IMO, a gun is a very good tool to have when someone is coming for you....especially if it's one of those suicidal estranged spouses someone up there brought up who likes to take his ex and kids with him when he goes to the promised land.

Your point being...?

That the actual probability that a gun owner will commit suicide is next to nothing. In the same light, what point were you trying to make? Perhaps I misunderstood.
