According to a Wikipedia article on gun violence in the US, Vermont came in at slightly above average with 42% of the population owning at least one firearm in 2007.

However, a later 2015 study shows that gun owners in the Northeast are much fewer in number. This estimates a modest 28.8% of Vermonters own a gun. Note that is the highest rate in the Northeast, and nearly equals the rate of North Carolina (28.7).

So then, why is it that Vermont has one of the lowest rates of gun violence in the country? Now, the previous two articles from Wikipedia and BusinessInsider had relatively conservative estimates for gun ownership, because according to a third article, Vermont is one of the best places to own a gun. According to the following article, nearly [SUP]3[/SUP]/[SUB]4[/SUB] of Vermonters own a gun (Watchdog, 2014).

Last year, gun violence in the state was outstripped by car accidents. So why is Bernie Sanders tough on guns? Well, in Vermont, about half of suicides are gun related.

Guns contribute to a large number of successful suicides (if you can call it that). The vast majority of suicide attempts involve drugs.

And how many suicides of any sort are preceeded by getting drunk/intoxicated with a little liquid bravery?

In my experience that number is lower than you might expect. From what I've seen when someone really decides to pull the plug they mean it. Yeah, alcohol and sleeping pills is a popular choice but the decision is generally made while sober.

Widespread gun ownership is good for the environment, because there are less breathing humans polluting the air with carbon dioxide. Not to mention but it helps with cleaning up the gene pool by eliminating idiots or the, weak minded, or the sick. Human bodies also make good plant food and promote worms on other soil enhancing creatures.

"So then, why is it that Vermont has one of the lowest rates of gun violence in the country?"

Notice that even this lower estimate of 28.8% is still higher than the 26.2% in Illinois, 25.9% in DC who have a lot of gun violence.
So perhaps gun ownership has little to do with anything and just perhaps its the culture of the area.

The drug folks just don't have their hearts in it. You want to go out? A gun will usually do it right.

Correlation does not imply causation. Large percentages of firearm ownership as compared to the total population does not translate into, imply, or equate to large percentages of criminal acts committed with firearms as compared to the total population. For instance, according to the chart in the OP, 28,8% of Vermonters own a firearm, while according to the FBI there were 8 murders in 2011 in VT, 4 perpetrated with a firearm, which according to the US Census 626,431 people lived in VT in 2011 meaning that the murder rate with firearms of 0.638 per 100,000 population, yet in Illinois where the ownership rate of firearms according to the OP chart is 2.6% less than Vermont at 26.2%, the FBI numbers show that 455 homicides occurred, 377 of which were committed with a firearm, the 2011 population was 12,869,257, meaning that there was a murder rate with firearms of 2.929 per 100,000 population. Meaning that Illinois has a firearm related murder rate 4.59 times larger than that of Vermont, yet Vermont has a larger percentage of citizens that own a firearm.

Guns are not the cause of violent crime.

There are more than likely a large number of reasons related to your question, one of which being the one Lutherf posted above, another would be the cultural demographics of those that legally possess guns and what they do with them (estimate - large percentage hunting / large percentage target practice / large percentage personal protection /very small percentage criminal acts) versus those that do not legally but still posses guns and what they do with them (basically the same as above, but reversed in percentages with criminal acts being the larger than average percentage of use given that they possess the guns illegally in the first place).

Another factor, is that the chart appears to only show the percentage of the population that owns guns, which I interpret being those that own them legally, and not illegally. In Vermont, I would hazard to say that the majority of the people that possess a firearm do so legally, where the number of illegal gun possession in Illinois is very large in comparison (this is conjecture based on news reports, btu I am still looking for data to support the statement and provide it when and if I find it).

Totally agree.

Re: Gun Control Policy: Which presidential candidate has the best record in their sta

What the OP misrepresents is the actual number in % that own guns.

Neither Wiki, or the general public, has any idea who owns what guns. By my estimate, you can add about 30% to all the numbers listed, except Alaska.

Also, by my estimate, there are approximately a half a billion guns, in the US, in private hands.

As for the Op...I really don't care what candidate has what percentage in his or her state, It really doesn't have anything to do with anything.

Celebrity has no idea what he/she is talking about.

All the bigots, could you please raise your hands so I can see where you are... ah yes. Ok guys, so if you will all just leave the thread while we discuss presidential candidates, Bernie Sanders, Hillary Clinton, Donald Trump, Jill Stein, Gary Johnson etc.

I'd say legal possession is far greater than the numbers listed in the chart.

I'd be willing to bet that Celebrity, wrongly thinks that a firearm has to be purchased through a dealer with a background check. True in some states, totally false in most.

I already discussed them, and their positions have only one thing to do with guns....

Democrats Anti-Gun
Republicans Pro-Gun

And there is nothing bigoted about any of my posts, on this or any other thread.

Like all liberals...............You Can't Handle the Truth!

My advice, keep being a student, you might get some skulls full of mush, to wrongfully believe what you say.

It's really laughable how so many edjeeecated libs, actually think they have all the answers, when in fact, they have a bucket of horse turds.
