What piece are you learning now?

    Do you rehearse enough? I don't. I should. I'm out giggin' most every weekend. Sometimes I pack my gits up at one show and don't take them back out until I'm at the next. But that ****'s gonna change. I miss playing my acoustic guitars. Haven't touched them in years it seems. So henceforth, I am going to try to learn one new song a week.

    This thread is dedicated to those who want to join in and do the same. Kinda like a book club, I suppose. Instead, we'll be the practice club.

    What are you working on?

    All too often, my act requires the impossible from me. I'm just only "so-so" good on bass. Even though nobody throws tomatoes at me (and I do get an "atta-boy" now and again,) nobody I have ever met has ever just walked up to me and said, "Dude! You're freakin' awesome on bass!"

    Okay, I'm rambling. Here's where I'm going with this. Tunes I have to learn and play are often on the difficult side for me so reaching out there is nothing new to me. I'm playing Floyd, Queensryche, Rush, etc., so I have done my reps.

    But this song. This SIMPLE song. Is kicking my ass. As simple as the vocals sound and as easily as I can sing it in my head, it is more difficult for me to sing and play acoustic on, than any Getty Lee I have ever attempted on bass.

    That's kinda weird. So simple, yet so out of reach for me.

    Don't be too hard on yourself for having difficulty playing and singing this one. While I am just an amateur musician, I've found the nuances in simpler songs can sometimes be harder to reproduce than more complex songs.

    Keep working at it and I'm sure you'll get it!

    This weeks assignments are:
    1. Smokin' - Boston
    2. Alone - Heart
    3. Spirit of the Radio - Rush
    4. Holy Diver - Dio

    Plus, I gotta refresh on:
    1. Keep on Rollin - REO
    2. Right Now - Van Halen
    3. Round and Round - Ratt

    Plus, I gotta go over all the old stuff, as I do only a weekly basis between jobs.

    I just finished up a great double lesson, for an hour. I am coming along in my basic open chords (A7, B7, C, C7, D, Dm, D7, Em, E, F, G). My instructor taught me several things tonight that I need to put into my practice rotation.

    First off, he taught me the major pentatonic scale. Very cool. We were in the key of E and I was playing lead for the very first time! Luckily he wrote down the tablature for it so I can reconstruct it.

    Next, he taught me the C7 movable shape (C7 -> C#7 -> D7 -> D#7 -> E7).

    Then he taught me the Am7 bar chord (Am7 -> A#m7 -> Bm7 -> Cm7 -> C#m7 -> Dm7 -> ...)

    To finish off the session, he taught me a little lick for rock'n'roll. Sounds good!

    Next week he is going to teach me "Shady Grove" by David Grisholm and Jerry Garcia as well as teach me a more advanced lick, using fingerpickin'. It's great to be making progress with my playing!

    I learned Shady Grove last week. It has some nice chord progression as well as some bass walks to keep it interesting.

    This week I learned "Blackberry Blossom", a pretty song. Here is tis:

    Here's what's on my to-do list.

    And this... I'm about half way there. I'm thinking that Roundabout will be a good one and Killer Queen will go over like a lead balloon. (Love Freddy Mercury but man, what a flamer, no?) But I get my assignments and I learn 'em. Mine is not to reason why. Mine is but to do or die.

    I'm about to start a practice regiment. I'll pick up my guitar or bass once in a while and play, but not often enough for the calluses to form on my fingers. So I end up getting blisters. I'll only learn a song if I really like it, otherwise I avoid cover tunes. I'm more interested in developing my own style instead of copying someone else's.
