States, cities, and counties are all facing HUGE deficits

Pink slips will be coming very soon

Especially if the senate doesnt get off its ass and help....

Police, fire, teachers, admin....they will ALL be cut and it seems likely in most locales

Wont just be the private sector suffering....everyone else is about to join the party

Fiscal Relief Needed Now to Stop Massive State Job Loss From Becoming Permanent | Center on Budget and Policy Priorities

Why, exactly, is transferring (converting?) state/local debt to federal debt a good idea?

where did i say that?

i said what is to come, IF the congress doesnt act

i didnt say this was good or bad....i leave that up to each individual reader to make up their mind

You "said that" by both citing an article that indicates the Senate is blocking needed efforts to pick up the State tabs (apparently the Democrat House is pushing for), AND indicating your agreement "if the Senate doesn't get off their asses and help."

The question was valid. Why should State debt be added to the Federal debt?

Yeup, and the Senate wants to ensure that the Senate becomes dominated by the Dems by refusing to extend the UE benefits past July and according to them no stimulous checks to individuals.
The Dems are going to win in a landslide in November.

If the States are required to pay back what they get from the Feds it does not add to the Federal debt.

So if schools are closed, there is no reason to keep them overstaffed.

Why should the federal government extend UE checks "past July?"

People need to get back to work. Right now MANY people are getting paid more for sitting home "sheltering" than they would be paid at their old jobs. No incentive to return to work, and every incentive to lose their jobs, as long as they can ride the Federal gravy train.

IMHO the only people who are pushing every effort for the economy to falter are doing so for two reasons.

One, to blame Trump for a bad economy so that the Democrats can use that for their campaign.

Two, so the Democrats can subsequently claim credit for the economic recovery after November 2020, if they win.

Your OP stated "if the senate does not get off its ass and help" and you cited a link expressing the same nonsense. Your thread presented a (political?) point of view on this issue - if you did not share that point of view then why present it?

The idea that state/local governments deserve to be given borrowed federal funds to cover their operating expanses because they dare not raise their own tax revenue is ridiculous. Step one of any such 'federalizing' plan should be to eliminate those state/local governments - if the federal government must fund these services then they should manage and staff them as well.

If the States are required to pay back what they get from the Feds it does not add to the Federal debt.

The states are quite capable of issuing bonds and raising the additional taxes needed to repay that debt.

My friends, we have a much bigger problem.

Assuming for a moment that States and several major metro areas start layoffs there is only one real entity that can deal with such aggregate demand fault, and it happens to be the federal government.

We did this in 2007-2008, shifting debt via stimulus to the States as well.

May have little choice but to do this again else the economic faults created by removing more people from healthy participation in the economy will amplify our economic problems and amplify the States and major metro areas from doing something about it.

The States themselves can only obtain emergency funds via two ways, issue new debt or ask the feds for help. Taxation is the worst idea when the economy has a fault, closely followed by accelerating a decline by sitting idly by allowing more people to be without a job.

The first step in states managing massive personal debt is recognizing there’s a problem. Are we there yet?

when the economy has a fault? It didn’t have a fault, Governors forced people against their will to leave their jobs.
And while I understand your use of the word taxation to mean additional income or sale tax, I wanted to point out this is all taxation in some form regardless of your bailout solution. Federal money going to states is paid taxation, either current or future taxation. Same goes for increasing the money supply.

You are right, we do have a big problems.

That is not entirely accurate, just about everything you said is problematic.

People are still being laid off or don't you know that. May furloughed employees have not been recalled by their place of employment and many may never be called, they just don't know. The businesses are going to be operating Lean for at least the rest of this year, pretending that everything is going to go back to normal is delusional. It is not hoping the economy will not be booming in November, it is simply the fact of the matter, show me reputable economy experts that are saying otherwise.
AND, add to that the Fact that we are still in a Pandemic, and the numbers are rising the more we open up, another harsh lesson for us to learn.
As for November, trump has already lost and now the Senate is up for grabs. Interesting times.

Then they should, and they should use their "rainy day funds", did you know Texas is sitting on at least 10.2 BILLION dollares and the Governor and Legislators refuse to use. If it ain't raining now in their opinion they should look out the window.

The congress critters from Texas will play the same get a federal handout game as the rest of them - why spend state/local funds when you can get "free" federal funds instead?

Don't know maybe we should ask them?

No need to do that - the latest massive federal deficit spending spree was unanimously supported.

Actually the latest bill is stalled in the Senate and we have yet to see their plan, should be very interesting and depending on what they put in it may very well determine who controls the Senate for the foreseeable future.

May as well wait since we can rest assured that (much?) more federal pork will be "needed" to cover the added expenses of the latest "protestor's" actions.

Not to mentioned that the Pandemic is not going away and will in fact continue to climb as we reopen and we Mingle more.
Hards times for the US and much of the rest of the World for the rest of the year and it will take years to rebound economically. 2020 is going to go into the history books with a bang.

I know very well how things are going, and it is a direct result of both the shutdowns, and the government handout packages. Yet people like yourself want to keep on giving out handouts...because "feelings."

If you give a man a fish, he'll eat for a day. If you keep giving that man a fish, he'll keep right on taking and eating as long as you are foolish enough to feed his needs.

Stop the feeding, and he either learns to fish, or starves...it's entirely up to him.

That was the same refrain back in 2016.

IMO however, many people are looking at what has been happening with Progressive-Democrat race-baiting and other grievance politics shenanigans. They are also looking at all this rioting, which IMHO is a direct result of that kind of divisive activity.

They are looking and they are not happy...but won't blame Trump.

So instead or predicting the future, I'll just shrug and see what happens in time. :coffeepap:
