What to do about all this debt? The fact is even if he cares, and I don't think he does, Trump hasn't a clue. He actually said back in 2016 that he could wipe out the debt simply by negotiating better trade deals. Here's an excerpt from a March 31, 2016 interview with Bob Woodward of the Washington Post:

Woodward: "Would you ever be open to tax increases as part of that, to solve the problem?"

Trump: "I don't think I'll need to. The power is trade. Our deals are so bad."

Woodward: "That would be $2 trillion a year."

Trump: "No, but I'm renegotiating all of our deals, Bob. The big trade deals that we're doing so badly on. With China, $505 billion this year in trade. We're losing with everybody."

It's impossible to overstate Trump's fiscal and economic ignorance here. The trade deficit with China when Trump spoke with Woodward was $366 billion, and the entire U.S. trade deficit with all countries, was $531 billion, according to Census Bureau data. That's a drop in the bucket compared to $20 trillion.

Once President Trump signs the budget deal that was passed by the House on Thursday and is expected to be approved by the Senate in a few days, he will have added $4.1 trillion to the national debt, according to the Committee for a Responsible Federal Budget. The total national debt surpassed $22 trillion in February...

U.S. GDP growth fell to 2.1% in the second quarter.

Republicans do not care about the debt. They were just waiting for an insecure hypocritical asshole who could tell them it's OK to be insecure hypocritical assholes in public. That's why they are sticking w/Trump.

Trump is a liar and a fraud. It's not even debatable anymore.

Trump is a complete idiot and this is just one example of his total incompetence and ignorance. He has no business in the nations highest office and must be removed ASAP.

Last year, Trump successfully renegotiated one of those crappy trade deals he was talking about way back in 2016 and we have the creation of the USMCA. This new trade deal will be hugely beneficial to all three countries involved, but especially for the US. Such is the power of a good negotiator.

So...what's the status of the USMCA? It requires Congress to sign off on it. That process starts with the House. So far, Nancy has been silent about the issue, while she does nothing to get the ratification process rolling.

In this most recent spending legislation, Congress used the debt ceiling as the threat to get Trump to pass THEIR spending increases. And now...people blame Trump for it. He's damned if he does and damned if he doesn't.

These are examples of Congress scheming, maneuvering and putting up roadblocks to prevent Trump from doing the right thing for the US. All they care about is making Trump look bad...even if it hurts the People...even if it hurts the Country...even if it blows the spending deficit and the National Debt sky high.

And the useful idiots? Well...we see how they are reacting here in this thread. "Trump!! Bad!!"

I guess all the legislation Mitch McConnell hasn't brought forward in the Senate that could help the US doesn't count
IT has to be ALL the DEMS fault
Maybe it is time for Mitch McConnell and the Republican Senate to do their job.
Have a nice afternoon

Trump is so delusional it is hard to tell when he is lying and when he believes what he says.

The problem with Trump is that he is that his Narcissistic Personality Disorder is so acute that he actually believes all that he says.

Narcissistic Personality Disorder - HelpGuide.org

...and the danger here is that he has created a cult. His followers have largely become untethered from reality to the point they believe Trump over actual facts.

Interesting. That's made up but it sounds nice. And even if the House did what you claimed (they didn't...), where's Presidential leadership? He's got the veto pen and 2 more months until the hard limits happen, and he shut down the country over the border stuff, so I guess the deficit and debt just aren't important to him.

But you will blame someone else, because the buck never, ever, ever, EVER stops on Trump's desks. All glory goes to TRUMP!! and all failures to ====> THOSE PEOPLE!

Again, Trump is President and can approve or veto any spending bill that gets to his desk. Why aren't you holding him at all accountable for his own failures?

FWIW, the McConnell led Senate also has to agree to this deal. So are they also just looking to make Trump look bad by folding like a cheap suit in front of Pelosi, who apparently is the only person with any power up there.

Republican politicians still have not figured out that tax cuts for the rich to not pay for themselves; they raise the national debt.

It has taken too long, but most Americans, and even a lot of Republican voters, have finally learned that tax cuts for the rich only benefit people who are rich. For the rest of us they mean tax increases, cuts in domestic programs that benefit us, and/or more national debt.

He made a similar promise during the campaign. Trump vowed to pay off the national debt in 8 years. But he’s touting a budget deal that would raise spending by more than $300 billion. | Markets Insider

The task is that the debt is $20 trillion. Even if Trump wins in 2020 (cough) that leaves five years to payoff $20 trillion, or $4 trillion a year starting now. The federal budget is about $4 trillion a year. That means collecting the same taxes and not spending a dime on anything -- no military, no Social Security, no Medicaid, no interest on the debt and no programs at all.

That would result in a depression that would make the Great Depression look like the good'ole days.

With incoherent statements like that, how can there be any doubt that this guy is completely unfit for office?

Sucks when congress does that to a president, huh?

We'll see if they get as bad as the Republicans with Obama.

Have the dems begun to actively oppose things they used to support because now trump wants it?

I certainly hope so.

Trump got diddly-squat in the USMCA. He got less than the US would have got under the TPP agreement Obama negotiated and Trump bailed on.

I suggest you take your own advice.

The Dems didn't completely control the Senate. Al Franken was seated nearly eight months after winning his Senate seat. Even if the Senate was controlled by Democrats (e.g. 50 seats), the statement ignores two other facts. a) there were Democrats in the Senate that vote as if they were Republicans. b) Republicans liberally used the filibuster to block legislation.

The Dems never had 60 Senate seats post-2008 that would be needed to overcome Republican opposition. They had between 56 and 58 seats. For that very brief period they had 58 seats with consistent support from Bernie Sanders and inconsistent support from Joe Lieberman. The Democrats hardly had 60 Dem seats, and hardly 60 reliable Dem votes. Then in a special election the following January, Scott Brown won Teddy Kennedy’s old seat, and was sworn in on February 4th.

How does a Recession end in one month?
Why do right wingers keep saying it ended in June of 2009?
for one thing Employment always lags behind when we are coming out of a Recession/Depression ( it is a fact and always has )
you don't have a recession one day ( or a month ) and out of it the next.
Fact is Unemployment / employment rates always lag behind when you are coming out of a recession/depression
and the only way it get out of a recession / depression is spend your way out of it or a large war like WWII so we spent our way out of it instead of starting another war.
So please answer the question why do the people on the right think you get out of a recession / depression over night?
Fact is it takes a lot of time to get out of a recession/depression it doesn't happen over night like the right wing keeps saying
and YES Obama did have a DEM Congress or the first two years he was in office , but with a large margin and after the Republicans took over he couldn't get anything done
They did what they said they would do, do everything they could do to make him a one term President and they kept it up after he was reelected
again please tell us how we get out of a recession overnight
Have a nice night

Republicans do not care about the debt. They were just waiting for an insecure hypocritical asshole who could tell them it's OK to be insecure hypocritical assholes in public. That's why they are sticking w/Trump.

Nor do most Democrats. Obama increased the national debt more than all prior president combined, and the USA was not in any world war or national mass civil war. I do not recall even ONE Democrat on this forum having any problem with that.
The national debt will not be an issue in this election because that is 1st priority to virtually no one. Thus, it is a truly pointless talking point for either side nor ever has been. That's why there is a $22 trillion and growing national debt. The overwhelming majority of people knowingly go into huge personal debt if it gets them what they want.

A month?

Are you saying the recession started in May 2009?

Anyway, my source for that date isn't "right wingers".

When did the Great Recession begin?

December 2007, according to the National Bureau of Economic Research, a private, nonprofit research group.

When did the Great Recession end?

June 2009, though lingering effects such as high unemployment continued to plague the United States well beyond that date.

"In determining that a trough occurred in June 2009, the committee did not conclude that economic conditions since that month have been favorable or that the economy has returned to operating at normal capacity," the NBER reported in September 2010. "Rather, the committee determined only that the recession ended and a recovery began in that month."

And a slow recovery it would be.
