Would you support increasing taxes to pay down the national debt?

If we're going to be honest with ourselves... paying off the national debt would be a hard hit on everybody... A HUGE reduction of federal spending [especially welfare programs] would be necessary...

Or perhaps spending less on tax cuts and the military....the idea that we are going to tax ourselves to retire debt is a pipe dream. No one truly wants to cut one trillion a year from the budget. Even if we did balance the budget, in order to pay down the total debt we would have to run a surplus for decades. Why in the world would we do that?

Spending on tax cuts? What the hell does that mean? What is wrong with people today who believe that people keeping more of what they earn is an expense to anyone else? This is a perfect example of the dumbing down of American and an indictment against our education system

Dude, you are like a wind up doll. Everything out of your mouth is some kind of insult or slur when its not pure hogwash. Yes, a tax cut is the same as spending, its a decision to spend tax revenue by giving tax breaks instead of using that tax revenue for something else. As you prove here every day with your barrage of bull****, you and people like you never fully grasp the implications of what you supposedly think is the remedy for all that drives you nuts. If you want to cut taxes and not run a massive deficit and increase the debt, you have to cut the government. So Mr. Answer Man, tell us how you would cut government to pay down the debt and have no deficit. We are all waiting with bated breath for your wisdom to finally show up.

It is hard not insulting someone who claims keeping more of what you earn is an expense and has to be paid for. That is pure ignorance. Giving tax breaks creates economic activity and as we have seen the past two years record results none of which resonate with radicals who refuse to accept the fact that the American people need to keep more of their own money than the gov't does in taking it. Tax cuts do not cause deficits, social engineering and entitlement spending do

You have been asked to prove that the tax cuts that went into effect January 2018 caused the 2018 deficits and you haven't done that, nor have you recognized the record revenue generated by the states and local gov'ts giving them the power to handle their own social problems that the federal bureaucrats used to buy votes.

Keep ignoring reality and I will keep "insulting" such radical rhetoric and downright lies

Stop spending money that means nothing to your new socialism follower

Simple question. Everyone loves to complain about the national debt, but who here would actually support a tax increase to pay it off?

Are you guessing if the Democrats win?

I would at least repeal the Trump tax cuts.

We must cut military and health care by fifty percent (50% ) and the only way to do this is to go Federally Vegan.

If I was running I would say to you I would raise everybody's taxes.

I want to pay what flat rate will pay debt although, I'll probably need a raise.

What's so special about the middle class?

Everybody should just pay and I not have my Government telling me to get married or buy a house.

Do you know what percentage of GDP we need to pay debt?

How are we going to get this?

Why repeal the tax cuts? Is the 3.5 trillion theyre taking not enough already? Per person spending is increasing faster than population growth. Which means govt is more expensive for each person. Even as less people are paying taxes.

stunning how so many radicals ignore the information you just posted along with the fact that approximately 50% of income earners pay ZERO in Federal Income Taxes yet the claim is the rich aren't paying enough. I am far from being in that rich category but do pay my taxes and do celebrate successes of other. Class envy, jealousy mark the radical Democratic Party of today. Interesting how so many liberals want the tax cuts repealed but haven't sent their back or is it possible that those who want the tax cuts repealed are the ones NOT paying any FIT?

I support raising taxes in the following areas:
1- every single person who makes dollar one on up should have their rate raised by five full points
2- all money going into a persons account or pockets should be taxed according to the same schedule with no such favorable rate for tools of the upper class like capital gains
3- all person should pay the full FICA tax on 100% of their earnings and income
4- a 1% transaction tax on all stock market purchases and sales of stock

Taxes cannot possibly be increased enough to pay off the national debt. There is little telling what our politicians will end up doing when they are finally forced to deal with the unsustainable debt. There is only one viable solution and that is to implement severe austerity measures, something I don't think very many Americans are prepared to consider.

We need to make Congress ( doesn't matter what party is in control ) not spend more then we take in. a Balanced budget amendment that we keep to.
Then Fix our national tax code so that Large Corporations don't get away without paying any US Income taxes.
it is now according to the GAO in 2017 43% of all US Corporations that made over a million dollars in US Profits ( some in the Billions ) did NOT pay one cent in US Income taxes in 2017
and a lot of them got tax benefits to carry over to the next year so they don't pay on that amount of money the next year up to 5 year carry over.
and that 42% is going to go up this year the GAO estimates it will be in the area of 65% of all Corporations that make over a million dollars in US Profits will not pay a CENT
in US income taxes.
I don't know about you but I am retired and on SS and I really don't like the fact that I pay more in US income taxes then a large Corporation that is making million if not Billions in US Profits.
It is not fair to the other 35% of Corporations to be paying US income taxes when 65% aren't
I believe they should re do the tax laws and make it where these Corporations do not get the deductions and carryovers they do now and have them pay a flat tax to the amount of say 10% of their total profits.
That would reduce the amount of taxes that the Corporations that do pay US income taxes have to pay and make large Corporations like GE pay something
I have asked many right wingers how it feels to pay more in US income taxes then these large Corporations do and haven't got any answers
We could also have a National sales tax say of one percent and have it dedicated to just paying off the debt.
IF we have a balanced budget and make it where we can not spend more then we take in and have a sales tax dedicated to just paying off the debt and when it does finally get paid off drop it
we would all be better off
Have a nice day

I am in favor of making sure that all corporations pay their rightful share of taxes. And I would support changes in the law to remove or close those sort of loopholes and exceptions that you cited in your post.

Would you have exceptions to your balanced budget amendment. For example, out nation in the Thirties and Forties ran up huge deficits - but for what many considered a necessary cause.

We dont have a tax problem, so thats all moot. We spend too much. Why do you have 10 suggestions to make us pay more taxes, and not a single one to spend less?

I think there may have to be exceptions ex some body attacks us like in WWII and maybe a deep recession or Depression
but otherwise it should hold our Government to only spending what we take in and not run deficits and run up the debt
Have a nice day

Please go back and reread my FIRST paragraph.
We need a balanced budget amendment that forces our government to NOT spend more then they take in
and make it enforceable
IF there is a deep Recession or a Depression or somebody attacks us like in WWII then we could run a deficit other wise not.
and again I have to ask do you like paying MORE in US income taxes then a large Corporation that is making Billions in US profits?
I don't and I am retired and on SS

Yeah you said "We need to make Congress ( doesn't matter what party is in control ) not spend more then we take in.", and then listed a bunch of ways to take more in. Where is the balance in that?

And yes, I DO like paying more in taxes than a large corporation. Because Im paying their taxes too. Its embedded in the price of everything. And their profits are distributed to shareholders like me, which count as income, on which i pay taxes.
