Trump cancels pay raise due to federal workers in January

Trump cited the "significant" cost of employing federal workers as justification for denying the pay increases, and called for federal worker pay to be based on performance and structured toward recruiting, retaining and rewarding "high-performing Federal employees and those with critical skill sets."
...
Democrats immediately criticized the move, citing the tax cuts Trump signed into law last December. That law provided steep tax cuts for corporations and the wealthiest Americans, and more modest reductions for middle- and low-income individuals and families.
Happy Labor Day, federal workers!

Is there any doubt that Trump is not the populist that he claims to be? He lowers taxes on the rich and corporations and then stops an automatic pay increase to federal workers, to try to mitigate the budget gap -- except that freezing these salaries don't come closing the gap.

Oh, and federal employee compensation is dominated by defense, veterans affairs, and homeland security. Spiting those workers means spiting the military and veterans, while shortchanging national security.

They didn't get any for 3 straight years under the last president.

Were you belly aching then?

I doubt it.

It's a bold November election strategy, Cotton
Let's see if it pays off for 'em

If it is, it will cost Trump the votes of millions of federal workers. Effectively, he is cutting their income (when adjusted for inflation).

That was due to inflation being almost nothing. Inflation is creeping up.
Moreover:

From USAToday
It would be the first pay freeze for civilian federal workers since 2011 to 2013, when President Barack Obama instituted a three-year pay freeze as the nation recovered from the recession.
But Trump's pay freeze comes even as he touts a booming economy. "The news from the Financial Markets is even better than anticipated," Trump tweeted just hours before announcing the pay freeze. "More good news is coming!"

Last time I remember, the vast majority of federal employees are conservative Republicans. Like I always say, conservatives are there own worst enemy.

Sure - many will vote against the Trump GOP because he screwed them on the raise. And lots of other federal workers will take the stick that he just shoved up their rear corridor and use it to mark their ballots for the GOP in their district and states. Stupidity knows no bounds.

I remember when the Access Hollywood tape came out I was sure Trump just lost the election since women would never vote for him.... and a majority of white women did.

Never underestimate the gross political stupidity of the deplorable. Never. It was the lesson I learned last November 2016.

Sometimes I think Trump wants to push the envelope so far just to see what he can get away with. In the next 6 months or so we may see him literally shoot somebody on 5th Avenue.

Once again, those in the military got a generous pay raise.

Last time I remember, the vast majority of federal employees are conservative Republicans. Like I always say, conservatives are there own worst enemy.

That message could not possibly be more wrong. Washington DC votes almost unanimously Democrat in every election.

He is NOT "cutting their income." Their spending power MIGHT be reduced in some categories - but many will not increase by inflation such as mortgages, car loans and credit card debt interest.

True. Lots of down-on-their-luck rural voters that depend upon the ACA still support Trump, even though he wants to repeal the ACA. I guess to them, losing benefits is less important than sticking it to liberals who think they're stupid. Hmmm...

When the CPI rises buying power diminishes. If your income doesn't rise to match the CPI, you are effectively getting a pay cut. You can try to spin it differently, but that's what it is.

Washington DC is a majority minority African American community with the African American population being 49%. The federal workers are not mirroring the population of Washington DC. With vets getting an extra 5% on their testing for federal jobs, the vast amount of federal workers have a higher level of former military personal working as federal workers. If you want to make a lifetime conservative, get a group of 18 year old males, place them in the military, and have them kill anyone in a military action or associate with older males that have killed someone in combat. After they leave the military and had killed someone, they will be more willing to accept anyone that says they are a political conservative. With that as a frame work, the average federal worker is a conservative

So Obama artificially kept interest rates down AND skipped out on giving raises.

Yeah, I guess those 60 plus million that voted for a failed former SoS totally negligent in handling classified material were smart as whip. :lamo

Anybody who votes against their own interests is simply an idiot.

I have a brother-in-law who is a diehard Limbaugh listener and who for his entire life has wanted to be MISTER SUCCESSFUL BUSINESSMAN and be a titan of the corporation. He has spent his life making one bad decision after another both in his career and in his personal life. He has gone from the bottom of the ladder in one company to the bottom of the ladder in a different company every few years until the only thing he could get was sales. He and his second wife life in a 900 square foot bungalow in a white trash neighborhood -sorry but that is exactly what it is - and he still votes Republican even though he cannot retire because he has no pension and nothing other than social security which he can never make it on.

And guess who he believes in and still votes for every election day? yup - the Republicans and he is a big Trumpkin.

They certainly showed they were smarter than those who voted for Trump.

So Obama artificially kept interest rates down AND skipped out on giving raises.
A) How did Obama do that, considering that the Federal Reserve controls interest rates, not the President?

B) What is "artificially low interest rates?" The Fed has two statutory charges: 1) maximize employment, and; 2) control inflation {2% target}
After the Great Recession, there was no inflation to speak of and unemployment was high. Under those conditions, low interest rates are warranted.

Welp, this sucks and hurts my pocket book, but wasn’t exactly unexpected nor is it the first time I’ll have to deal with the start of year pay raise not occurring. Thankfully, I anticipated for this so have been budgeting as if I wouldn’t see an increase next year.

We all know people like that -- What's the Matter With Kansas?
According to Frank, the conservative establishment has tricked Kansans, playing up the emotional touchstones of conservatism and perpetuating a sense of a vast liberal empire out to crush traditional values while barely ever discussing the Republicans' actual economic policies and what they mean to the working class. Thus the pro-life Kansas factory worker who listens to Rush Limbaugh will repeatedly vote for the party that is less likely to protect his safety, less likely to protect his job, and less likely to benefit him economically.
