Trump's goal is for everyone to do away with all tariffs.

Probably best in the long run, especially for the United States?

Sort of, actually... not really.

What happened is Trump made a comment via Twitter about what he wants from the EU, and he formed the comment as an attack in advance of the meeting.

Ultimately what we have here is a political excuse to continue with tariffs on the suggestion that he has no choice. Said another way, Trump is trying to combat some of the fallout from the tariffs he has gone with so far.

What would have been best for the US to start with is dealing with trade agreements and “barriers” in place now as a means to deal with unfair practices but it would mean the more challenging road. Actually being the “negotiator” he claims to be instead of being the asshole we already know him to be.

Moreover, this is the guy who tore up the Trans Pacific Partnership, which would have eliminated tariffs.

I'll also repeat myself from other threads -- there already are no or low tariffs between all G7 countries. There are exceptions, such as the 25% tariff the U.S. places on foreign trucks. The U.S. also heavily subsidizes dairy. Swampy isn't going to agree to drop our tariffs.

Probably so. But man, if those anti-globalists, "America first", xenophobes, and anti-new world order types were all upset, paranoid, and freaking out before, man is this going to get them all riled up!

And then again, maybe not. Maybe if Trump does it, it's OK by them. They forgive Trump for everything else. Maybe this is what it took to get the Trump base to move toward globalism and the new world order.

If anyone thinks the US will drop subsidies, they are living in a fantasy world. The US is certainly 'not ready' to do this... the GOP would go nuts if it was forced to kill the farm bills that subsidize all their red state farmer voters.

This concept is just a Trump worthless promise. You really CANT eliminate all tariffs and subsidies - the US will cling to agriculture subsidies forever, EU will do the same, as well as the simple reality that every other developed nation in the world subsidizes their workers health care -which means the US is always at a disadvantage because our companies pay for healthcare to workers as a general rule.

Working and negotiating these trade barriers is a great idea though.. it takes years to do this, and lots of compromises by all sides. And Trump killed the TPP, which would have done this (as well as isolated China!) and wants to kill NAFTA.

Stupid and greedy is no way to run a country, Trump.

No. Tariffs are in place to ensure that vital national resources and infrastructure remain in place, so that they are not beholden to other countries for their necessities. This isn't good for anyone, not even America.
