Food stamp enrollment falls to 8-year low as Trump clamps down on fraud, economy improves

It's good to see people getting on their feet.

I'll fix that. I'm filling out an application immediately. I no longer show earned income other than SS and a minor annuity. Damn, they want to see assets, dividends and annual capital gains. Screwed by the government again.

I think you have a problem with English. A quarterly report refers to one quarter of a full year. You'll find that Obama had plenty of quarters above 3 and some above 4 as well. They don't matter all that much. I count the recovery from when it started. An economy that is falling is not recovering by definition. You seem intent on creating a reality where Trump improved the economy in some noticeable way. What policies did Trump implement that changed the economy, and what was the change? Please don't really solely on 2016 numbers this time as it is a dishonest representation of an 8 year long presidency.

No, I think it is you that has the problem, yearly numbers are what truly matters not quarterly and the reality is Obama was in office in 2009 WITH a DEMOCRATIC CONGRESS that you want to ignore. Obama had the worst recovery from a recession in US History but actual results seem to escape you. Maybe a civics class would help you understand the true role of the federal govt. and economics to understand our private sector. Seems we came out of recession in June 2009 yet 2009 had -2.7% Growth. Seems to me that coming off negative growth we should have exceeded 3% annual but didn't showing the power of the Obama economic policies which even the electorate got. What is it about liberalism that creates this kind of loyalty?

What specifically has Trump done for the economy?

Check out the economic results and find out. bea.gov, bls.gov, and treasury.org all provide the official data but like far too many you don't understand the private sector and how it is responding to the Trump EO's and how the repeal of Obama anti growth EO's have benefited them in employment and economic activities

Why is clamping down on fraud offensive to you?

May be clamping down on fraud leaves more for those who actually need it. That, I think, is the goal here. Of course some cheap shots about the rich make for a more emotional conversation, unless one thinks that fraud isn't real. We need to look out for the most vulnerable among us. Our funds aren't endless.

when did i argue against finding fraud? did you completely miss the point?

Your statement is obviously an argument against the OP title, which is about clamping down on fraud. Or are you just making up statements that have nothing to do with the thread?

don't i know it.

You point seems to have been a jab at the rich. I didn't read anything about finding fraud.

well, then i will clarify. i have no problem with rooting out fraud. i do have a problem when the real goal is gutting a safety net, and the advertisement is "rooting out fraud."

you did miss the point, apparently.

those who are bleeding you dry are not below you on the socioeconomic ladder. have you ever been a "contractor?" if so, did you pay attention?

A different cup of tea, but if that's where the investigation into fraud leads, by all means, lets. We are talking about people who are receiving food stamps. Most need them, and even with that, they barely get by. Isn't the average about $500 for a family of 4? May be we could increase that if we weed out those who don't need the help. I.e., people getting paid under the table. It isn't much, it is anecdotal, but just last week I spoke to 2 different people who fall into that category.
So many elderly and disabled should get a little more, just so they don't have to turn around every penny. Whatever it takes, lets make their lives better. Slinging mud at the rich without digging into the rest won't help. Lets overturn all stones.

Why didn't you say that? Hugs

i don't trust those who are stone turning. i am fairly convinced that they have motives which are not in the best interest of poor people. do you really think that the savings are going to go to the genuinely needy or even back to you?

That's YOUR point, which is arguing against the OP. Hence, you are against clamping down on fraud. Which is MY point.

I disagree with YOUR point because I'm not that high on that ladder. Fraud makes it harder for honest people to get those services. Direct your concern at those that cause the situation. JMO

i'm not against clamping down on fraud. i also do not collect any food stamp benefits.

are you a full time, recognized employee of the company that you work for?

Easiest way to solve the illegal immigration problem. Sure...we need better border enforcement, but enforce e-verify and punish employers that hire illegal immigrants and then kill all federal aid to states that provide welfare services to illegal immigrants. Doesnt mean we have to cut aid to the individuals....the individual can apply directly to the fed, but no federal dollars to the state. Once the jobs are gone, welfare benefits are gone, and we have dried up the social security monies going into Mexico...that whole illegal immigration problem will tend to solve itself.

I think you need to admit that you have lead this conversation far astray. I originally pointed out that Trump's economy is simply following the trend set by Obama's economy. If it makes you feel better I don't think presidents really have that much sway over GDP. You seem to just want to yell about Obama and claim Trump has done amazing things because you want to, and not because the data shows it. I don't know why you are projecting so much, but I hope you learn to mature out of it.

The article didn't mention any specifics about "reducing fraud." What it did say was that the Trump Admin was making it harder to get SNAP. I can't imagine why fewer people would participate if it's harder to get into the program.

Oh, and SNAP participation has been falling since 2013, when Trump was first elected. Oh wait...

But this is par for the course for this Administration -- cut taxes for the rich, then cut the budget for nutrition programs for the poorest people in the country.

Trump is screwing his base. The states with the highest p% of the population on SNAP are Trump states. Some of the biggest beneficiaries of these safety net programs are members of the Trump-supporting white working class. But the modern G.O.P. basically consists of career apparatchiks who live in an intellectual bubble, and those Reagan-era stereotypes still dominate their picture of struggling Americans.

Most of the people who are on SNAP are children, the elderly, the disabled and people who work but just earn too little. The idea that making is hard for SNAP recipients will give them an incentive to get a job ignores the facts.
Fake news. Everyone knows that the US was collapsing, markets were at the bottom, and gangs of wild immigrant children were killing people before Trump tookover.

I am a full time employee. Recognized as much or less than any other employee I would imagine.

ah. ever pretended to be a contractor or to work for some third party so that your real employer could play pretend as well and avoid paying you as a full time employee?

i live in a red "right to work" "fire at will state," though, so that is status quo here. costs me a lot in income, though my "contract" employer does provide good health insurance. either way, those above me are benefitting from my labor a whole lot more than those below me on the ladder. this is why i generally sneer at those who are telling me about poor leeches and the damage that they do. if they cut them all off without a dime, i'd probably see the same below cost of living raise that they give us every year. FFS, they got a fourteen percent tax cut. very little of that trickled down to me, and they could fire my department this Monday, and i would have no recourse. the mortgage would still be due, though. you'll forgive me if i'm a little less worried about what poor people might do to me.

And that is a lie, Obama's trend was down if you paid any attention to actual results but you don't as you are totally indoctrinated into the leftwing ideology. Only a leftists believes results 8 years later that aren't better than they were pre recession is a success and that adding 3.8 trillion to the economy is better than Bush's 4.5 trillion INCLUDING 2008
