Trump's tariffs on US allies will shrink the savings Americans gained from tax cuts

President Donald Trump has embarked on an unorthodox follow-up to cutting the taxes American families pay: raising the prices of goods they buy. Higher prices will result directly from tariffs the White House plans to impose on steel and aluminum imports from allies such as Canada, Mexico and the European Union as well as other countries. The White House acknowledges that effect, while arguing the price increases will be tiny. But combined with additional tariffs against other imports from China and retaliatory steps by our trading partners, the measures Trump announced promise to make an impact. And mainstream economists across the political spectrum agree it will be negative. "Unambiguously bad," said Douglas Holtz-Eakin, a Republican economist who advised President George W. Bush. "The only question is how big." "Anything that's manufactured — prices will rise," added Mark Zandi, an independent economist at Moody's Analytics.

Trump concedes his trade policies will cause "a little pain." But he insists that 25 percent steel and 10 percent aluminum tariffs will benefit the country by boosting the domestic manufacturing of building-block products crucial to economic vitality and national security. His argument collides with 21st century economic reality in multiple ways. First, the number one source of U.S. steel imports is Canada, the closest of economic and national security allies. Second, as past tariff experiences have shown, jobs lost in industries that pay more for steel and aluminum inputs (think cars and beer cans) will far outnumber those gained from tariff protection for steel and aluminum manufacturing. Third, counter-tariffs by trading partners will damage American export sectors such as agriculture — exports that disproportionately benefit Trump-allied heartland states represented by fellow Republicans. Sen. Ben Sasse of Nebraska, echoing other GOP lawmakers, observed simply, "This is dumb." "They're just not doing the economic arithmetic correctly," Holtz-Eakin said.

Everyone should have noticed that gasoline prices are moving steadily upwards since the Iran debacle. The same will now happen in virtually every US economic sector thanks to Trumpian trade policy.

Y'all tired of all this winning?

I don't know what to say at this point, these Trump supporters will probably be happy to pay high prices because they will convince themselves they are helping America or something. If they really paid attention to the news, they would clearly see that Trump is leading America down a very bad economic path. His supporters have so much faith in him, even if a full blown recession happened, they would probably blame Hillary.

My co-workers are happy gas prices are rising because they have stocks in oil companies. Stocks right wing economic doomsdayers told them to buy a month ago.

I live in Trump country too, so the doomsday stuff doesn't surprise me. I remember when Obama was in office they talked like he was the anti Christ, and we were living in the end times. Wing nuts have taken over the GOP.

The first winner here will be Mexico. I bet every corporation in the US that relies on imported materials is looking at real estate brochures in Mexican border states. Imagine the advantage to relocating to Mexico now.

Higher inflation will lead to higher wage growth. This is good for everyone.

Higher inflation will benefit the rich, who own lots of real estate which accrue in value faster than inflation, but fueled by it, more than workers, whose wages tend to lag behind inflation, especially those without union contracts. Also, for those who are unable to hedge against inflation, it erodes purchasing power of savings, which is de facto taxation without representation. So, no, it's not good for everyone, not equally, this is certain.

.... I usually avoid economic discussions unless I know for sure whoever I'm about to talk to is a moron. That said, I don't know you so this is a shot in the dark...

But did you just geniunely argue that higher inflation leads to higher wage growth and these are good things?

Really? I don't think you know what inflation means...
