For every Amazon package it delivers, the Postal Service loses $1.46

An old salesman joke: A salesman says, "We sell below cost." A customer asks how he can do that. "Simple," he says. "We buy below cost."

For a day or so last week, Jeff Bezos passed Bill Gates as the richest man in the world. And that's pretty much how he did it.

The Postal Service is required to deliver to every mailbox or mail slot at the same level and price for everyone. Now that mail has receded, and package delivery has grown, the numbers no longer work. So as taxpayers, we are subsidizing Amazon’s delivery expense.

Being that the Postal Service is a constitutional entity, it will be an open question as to how this changes, but in fairness, it needs to change.

 Just like clockwork - Trump complains about the USPS, and now all his minions have to complain about it, too.

The corporate state seeks to privatize everything, including our endless wars of empire and economic colonization. Eric Prince took a run at that and he'll be back. What Bezos is, is pretty clear. Buys up the WaPo. Then enters into a deal with the CIA worth 3 times what he paid for the paper. Then puts a CIA operative on the WaPo's editorial board to push more war. America is on an unsustainable path. Watch.

Amazon uses multiple carriers.

https://www.quora.com/Does-Amazon-use-FedEx-or-UPS-to-ship-packages

Amazon uses multiple carriers to ship products across the U.S. The choice of carrier depends on various factors such as shipping location, destination location, size of package, value of contents in the package, promised delivery time frame, Amazon Prime vs. Free Super Saver shipping etc.

A few examples:

1. Amazon Prime shipping packages are mostly shipped via UPS. In case of destinations not served by UPS, alternate carries like FedEx/DHL are used.
2. If the estimated delivery date falls on a Saturday, then it is very likely that the package will be shipped via FedEx as UPS doesn't deliver it on Saturdays.
3. Majority of the Free Super Saver shipping packages are shipped via USPS. In case if the products is expensive or bulky then it gets shipped via UPS.
4. If the product you ordered is available in a nearby Amazon warehouse (usually within a 40-50 mile radius), they partner with local courier companies such as A1 Courier Services in Philadelphia and Delaware and OnTrac in California.

I'm not a Trump guy, but I prefer UPS over the post office.

The post office is chock full of lazy assholes, and incompetence, and I know this from first hand experience.

Oh I 100% agree with you, there. I hate the USPS. Their package tracking is laughable and their reliability is mediocre at best.

I prefer FedEx over anyone. They seem to be the most reliable - at least to me.

As long as it arrives as it should, I am for paying fellow americans wages they can live on. But the postal service should never come under corporate state control just like the food an water supply should ever come under corporate state control. You folks are going to have to become satisfied with wage suppression and economic manipulation to subdue the masses.

It depends on where you live:

From the article:

Bezos runs Amazon, which is primarily a shipping business. It relies on the U.S. Postal Service to deliver two-thirds of its packages. In many places now, it locates a depot near a post office, presorts the packages, and delivers them to the post office. The Postal Service, which has a monopoly on last-mile delivery, does the rest.

Mine come UPS, also.

It's always funny to see conservatives complain about the free market...

That right there is funny. Nobody else WANTS to take the "last-mile delivery" business of many addresses in the US because there's no profit in it. That's part of the reason why the USPS loses money. That, and they have to pre-fund hundreds of millions in retirement benefits.

There are “free markets” and there are “subsidized markets”. Amazon is getting a legal, unexpected subsidy of taxpayer largesse.

Hey who said if you can get around the system, then that's smart?

We simply cannot have workers in america living in any kind of economic security after a lifetime of work which makes the system go. But not to worry, we've also just deregulated the nursing home industry wherein patients will have no recourse in the face of maltreatment. That might get in the way of someone’s profit.

You folks? The post office could die tomorrow and I wouldn't give a ****.

Fedex and UPS delivery drivers make pretty good money.

I don’t know any FedEx drivers, but all the UPS drivers I have met are dues paying Teamsters.

UPS certainly delivers saturday in my area.
But yes they do use multiple vendors including the USPS (now)

ALso in my area until the USPS almost went under amazon was NEVER delivered by USPS. Im not aware of what happened but some deal was struck for USPS to do some of the shipments so they wouldn't go under I believe. Not sure. And I actually hate it because when they take over a package its much more likely to be a day late and accurate tracking ends.

So it would be my guess if the USPS is losing money its still their own fault.

In what world is the United States Postal Service part of "free markets"? Its a freaking government entity. Your post is comically stupid.

I buy on Amazon often. It's probably 50-50 here between USPS and UPS deliveries. I never once had a problem with either. Both always been on-time, UPS's tracking is better, but USPS is OK.

Funny thing is this time of year(Christmas) USPS even delivers packages on Sunday here. Yeah, SUNDAY! 11 months out of the year UPS doesn't even deliver on Saturdays here, let alone Sundays. Unless it's SurePost, then they drop it off to USPS and the Post Office deliver it on Saturdays,,

Also remember why USPS is losing money every year. Because of a Congressional mandate( Republican Mandate, BTW) it has to it has to annually pay billions of dollars into a health fund for future retirees... Something that NO private business would ever do.

Add in the fact that the USPS has wanted to make changes, it's often asked for flexibility to make changes, stop Saturday deliveries, and close some facilities, BUT Congress won't let them(both Dems and GOP in Congress are to blame) so because of Congress the USPS can not make needed changes. So blame Congress before we blame the people who work for the USPS.

The USPS gets no Federal Funding. Yet it is required to maintain post offices where there is almost no demand, make deliveries on Saturdays, and suffers price controls, and subsidized by the USPS governmental and political mailings.

The major source of USPS revenues has been second, third and 4th class bulk mailings. All three have diminished. (could have fooled me considering how much junk mail I receive) Mostly replaced by parcel delivery services. Most of USPS deficits lie in unfunded pension liabilities. After a decade of losses, the past three years prior to 2016 saw major increases in both revenues and profits, with extremely high returns on the sale of US Postal Money Orders and collectible stamps. 2015 saw US Postal Money Orders outpace Welles Fargo for immigrants and green card holders sending home money. The USPS is less expensive than Welles Fargo. Turns out most of losses were caused by equipment upgrades and the self development of computer software which is now paying off, big time. OCR and scanning for Post Office needs was not available in the open markets, and now automatic sorting has diminished workforce needs dramatically. The "Amazon" problem will diminish as Amazon shifts from its own delivery software to the USPS software. Lack of synchronization has created the losses. Should be completed within the next 18 months.
