The Koch Brothers Have a Plan to Make the Tax Bill Popular

The billionaire Koch Brothers have bought the Republican Party

Now, comes the sell. Hours after Congress sent a sweeping package of tax cuts to the White House for President Donald Trump’s signature, the powerful network of advocacy groups backed by billionaires Charles and David Koch went into high gear to turn around the bill’s dour poll numbers. Planned to last at least six months—heading right into the months when voters will turn their attention to the 2018 midterm elections—the multi-platform Koch-backed campaign will seek to explain the benefits of the tax package. The sales job will be tough. Polls find the proposal incredibly unpopular with voters: a CNN poll released this week found 55% of voters opposed to the bill. And for good reason. The bulk of the benefits will go to those who make more than $300,000 a year, according to the non-partisan Tax Policy Center. And, by 2027, those earning less than $75,000 annual will see a tax hike while the cuts for the ultra-rich remain, according to the Center for Budget and Policy Priorities. Democrats, who stood unified against the package, now plan to weaponize it against Republicans next year and beyond.

Republicans grumble that they had little choice but to pass this unpopular bill. For years, they’ve promised sweeping tax cuts. Now, given control of the House, the Senate and the White House, they delivered on campaign rhetoric in a big way. Failing to do so would have meant they had control of all levers of official Washington power and still accomplished nothing. They had to show they could, in fact, govern. The Koch-backed network spans interest groups, advocacy organizations, think tanks and P.R. machines. It went in with $20 million to push for these tax cuts and promised lawmakers that their backs would be covered if they supported it. Still, the tax bill is just as unpopular on the day it is becoming law as the Democrats’ health care bill was when it became law in 2010. Republicans used Obamacare as to bludgeon their way into the majority that year. Even so, views of Obamacare have improved in the years since. Republicans are hoping their tax cuts will fare as well.

Unsurprisingly, the billionaire Koch Brothers and their Koch Industries are among the biggest winners in the GOP tax giveaway to the ultra-wealthy and corporations.

This is a major GOP donor family that told the GOP leadership to pass the tax legislation or the Koch family would cease their contributions to GOP election campaigns.

Apparently even the Kochs didn't trust the GOP to get this through, and are only putting money into the PR campaign after its already passed. Poll numbers reflect the uphill battle they face, the left really got the jump on them on this one. And polishing a turd is always a challenge in and of itself.

Then I guess you guys will be returning your tax cuts in protest then right?

These two jerks are in the TOP TEN PUBLIC ENEMIES list.

I think that in the first year or so we will see a small increase in popularity. When cuts start coming to programs it will start to level out, and of course when the bill raises their taxes it will plummet. I don't think the old "bald eagle" or "American flag" type terminology will save them on this one long term.

Just goes to show what a big idiot Bernie Sanders is.

He regularly enjoys lying about the Kochs, and getting folks all upset over nothing.

If the democrats weren't so damned stupid, they'd realize that the Kochs have done more to help them than hurt them. The Kochs oppose a wall on the southern border -- they opposed a ban on Muslim immigrants -- and they've even spent millions trying to convince Congress to make the "Dreamers" permanent US citizens.

It's funny, really.

The Koch's are working from the bottom up, focusing on state and local elections and funding schools of government, politics, law, economics, and more, to further their own politics in state universities and colleges.

Oligarchs like the Kochs are ruining American politics. This is exactly what happened in Russia and the ex-Soviet Republics. 25 years after independence, oligarchs still own governments.

Soros tops that list in spades.

He is international and makes the Koch boys look like church choir boys.

With out him, your party would be bankrupt. Oh, and don't bother denying it. Soros has more shell organizations than you can count.

So you lefties have the winner of Public enemies.

Can you make a post that is not 'what aboutism" or knee jerk responsive "but your guy....."?

An alternative campaign to popularize this Tax Cut might be to let wage earners read their pay stubs next year.

Not when it comes to Soros.

As far as I am concerned, Soros effectively owns the left here, in Canada and all of Europe.

I consider him a threat to our national security, as I do the Democratic party who takes him money.

I can not tell you how low you Democrats are for this man. Your party would do much better if you would refuse his money.

But of course that will not happen.

There is zero proof in the article that the Koch Brothers benefitted or will benefit.

I think people seeing an additional amount in thier paychecks is going to be the thing that will make it popular.

The lefts problem with the Koch brothers has everything to do with the fact that they oppose communism. The Kochs do not live lavishly, they work hard to promote a safe efficient industry that makes a product that the Leftist elites cherish more than anything; jet fuel for their executive jets.

That the Koch bothers without fanfare devote prodigious sums to charity cant buy them salvation; letting communism run the oil patch the same way Venezuela does is what the left wants: rust, decay, and poverty - the hallmarks of socialism

Don't blame Russia. The US has always been an oligarchy, actually a kleptocracy, that steals trillions from the poor of the world.

And yet 80% of Americans will see a reduction in the taxes.

That must the moronic 80% of the population.
