San Diego City Council Approves $6.5M To House Homeless In Industrial Tents KPBS, November 14, 2017,By City News Service

The City Council Wednesday approved a plan to spend $6.5 million on industrial-sized tents to accommodate the homeless in Barrio Logan, the East Village and the Midway District.

The vote was 8-1, with Councilman David Alvarez opposed.

The so-called bridge shelter program is designed to serve 700 people, beginning Dec. 1 and ending June 30, 2018. The project includes a goal of having 65 percent of homeless people in the tents eventually move into permanent housing.
...

The hepatitis A outbreak has finally forced the issue of the cost of ignoring poverty. Worry about encouraging a dependent mentality is taking second place.

Poverty is not ignored. Homelessness is not a poverty problem, it's largely a mental health issue.

True. 'Ignored' was hyperbola, referring to the rhetoric from the right that seems to want to remove or reduce aid to the poor.

Here in Austin, it's a business. complete with pimps who schedule and transport the 'homeless" to and fro. Sheds a bad light on those who actually need help.

The politics of victimization isn't helpful.

LOL now that is ignorance at its finest...

You're good for a laugh, but that's about it. If you can refute what I said please do so.

Why is it libs cannot have an honest discussion, ever? Why do you insist on misharacterization, misinformation, and hyperbole to make your case? Can't your ideas stand on their own two legs without being dishonest?

Yep, that's the problem with getting government involved in housing these people. 6.5 million to house 700 people? Give me a break.

Hmm... that big tent cost is about $770/month for each of the 700 homeless which is likely enough to let each group of four or five of them share a rental house ($3080 or $3,850/month).

Yeah, and not even relocate them to the outskirts of the county, but place them smack dab in the middle of the city. I'm sure the residents in the area are just delighted to have homeless compounds right in their midst. If they're going to spend this kind of money, they should just build permanent large scale facilities and lock these people in at night. Sounds harsh, I know, but it's not fair to the residents of the city to have to have these bums roaming the streets.

"when the city cleaned up for the 2016 All-Star Game by pushing its homeless out of the touristy areas downtown and into increasingly congested encampments and narrow freeway onramps just east of downtown."

"Some health officials speculate that one trigger of the outbreak might have been the state’s plastic bag ban, which went into effect in November. What had once been a practice of last resort — defecating in a plastic bag and tossing it in the trash — is no longer an option. (The first recorded hepatitis A case occurred at the end of November.)"

bags are banned, toilets are closed, hep a is spread by close contact. What part of my post is "ignorant"?

The reality is, many of these guys are nuts. Some violent which is why the shelter system fails. by changing shelters into forced tent cities, it's going to get worse not better.

From the article
"While we work to match folks with a permanent home, they need a safe place to stay," Faulconer said.

They have plenty of bags.

They have plenty of bags.

so your only issue is with the bags?

the rest of my comment, you agree with?

They are literally handing out plastic bags now in health kits.

"San Diego banned plastic grocery bags last year, taking away a manageable alternative to defecating outside a bathroom. County health workers are now handing out thousands of “hygiene kits” that include plastic bags."
