Texas Booms (+3.9%) as California Flatlines (0.1%)

California has the Nations highest marginal tax rate and is rated as #6 for States with the highest tax burden. The IRS reported that between 2013 and 2014, over 250,000 California residents moved away between 2013 and 2014. More than 10% went to Texas alone and many more people and businesses have bailed since 2014. California gets 49% of its revenue from the top 1% of its population, an its been chasing off its tax base at a alarming rate over the last 8 years

California has massive unfunded liabilities, and a growing budget deficit, it also has the largest population of chronic homeless living in LA, and a homeless crisis in San Francois and the highest child poverty rate in the Nation. Its also adverting itself as a sanctuary State inviting in illegals who dont pay State income taxes. Cali is a mess, and whats worse is they're not even attempting to head off the inevitable

Ive got nothing against California, I have family that lives in Palo Alto and Berkely and I thinks its one of our most beautiful States, but its being mismanaged by ideologues who put their beliefs over the welfare of their citizens and State. No State can just continue to increase their dependent class, ignore their budget and drive away their tax base without massive consequences.

Brown not long ago celebrated Cali balancing their budget, but I knew it was BS, and then THIS came out....

$1.9 billion error adds to California deficit projection

$1.9 billion error adds to California deficit projection
Rich Californians don't care about the marginal tax rate. They rather live in California and pay more in taxes than pay less in Texas and have to live there. They feel the same about cars. They can buy an economy car and save money or buy a luxury car, pay more but get the features they want.

You did mention a statistic Those moving from California and 10% moved to Texas. I assure you that those aren't the top earners.

I've been hearing for decades about unfounded liabilities and it seems that California lives up to its obligations to pensioners nevertheless.

Sanctuary cities: Who cares?

An even simpler way to make the point: Try renting an apartment in San Francisco, or better yet, a single family home.

No California is NOT a net tax payer. They still havent payed back the 8 Billion dollar " loan " they took out from the Feds under Obama to help shore up their unemployment benefits.
https://www.google.com/amp/amp.sacb...government/capitol-alert/article23027604.html

You are clearly confused. In 2014, California received $356 billion from the federal government expenditures while paying out $369 billion to the Feds. That's a net $13 billion in 2014 alone.

but it also has 324 billion dollars in unfunded pension liabillities and 150 billion dollars in unfunded retirement benefits

Strawman. This has nothing to do with a single quarter of state GDP growth. The rest of your post is regurgitated partisan talking points fixated around this fallacy response.

Sanctuary cities: Who cares?

California gets 50 percent of their revenues from the top 1 percent, which makes the State vulnerable to capital flight.
Rich Californians also have their limits, tech giants like APPLE offshore their profits to avoid paying excessive repatriation taxes, creating and sending all their profits to subsidiaries in Nations like Ireland where they pay almost no tax on their profits.

Apples profit margin is one of the highest for any Corporation. On the I-phone 4 they were making over 350 dollars in profit per phone

Now as a Free maket Conservative even I find APPLEs, Intels and Googles, etc attempts to avoid paying taxes on profits reprehensible.

Cali cant depend on the richest 1 percent to close their unfunded liabillties gap. Their tax revenue is simpley a drop in the bucket compared to unfunded liabilities gap that rose 22 percent last year alone.

An even simpler way to make the point: Try renting an apartment in San Francisco, or better yet, a single family home.

Ive got Family Berkely and visit quite often.
Housing prices are ridiculous, just unbelievable.
What you wind up with are these Cities and locals with two distinct classes on the opposite end of the spectrum.

The very rich and the very poor, there's no room for the Middle class because theyve been priced out of the Housing market

Not to mention that a lot of Texas is a real ****hole. There are some pretty areas like the Hill Country and Big Bend, but the other 90% of the state either looks like a much hotter version of Kansas at best, to "my God who on earth would ever want to live here" at worst.

Because unlike most of Texas, people will actually pay a premium to live in a place like California. House prices are cheap in cities like Houston because its flippin Houston.

Dear Diary: June 1st:
Just moved to Texas! Now this is a state that knows how to live!! Beautiful sunny days and warm balmy evenings. What a place! It is beautiful. I've finally found my home. I love it here.

June 14th:
Really heating up. Got to 100 today. Not a problem. Live in an Air-conditioned home, drive an air-conditioned car. What a pleasure to see the sun everyday like this. I'm turning into a sun worshipper.

June 30th:
Had the backyard landscaped with western plants today. Lots of cactus and rocks. What a breeze to maintain. No more mowing the lawn for me. Another scorcher today, but I love it here.

July 10th:
The temperature hasn't been below 100 all week. How do people get used to this kind of heat? At least, it's kind of windy though. But getting used to the heat is taking longer than I expected.

July 15th:
Fell asleep by the community pool. (Got 3rd degree burns over 60% of my body). Missed 3 days of work. What a dumb thing to do. I learned my lesson though. Got to respect the ole sun in a climate like this.

July 20th:
I missed Lomita (my cat) sneaking into the car when I left this morning. By the time I got to the hot car at noon, Lomita had died and swollen up to the size of a shopping bag, then popped like a water balloon. The car now smells like Kibbles and ****s. I learned my lesson though. No more pets in this heat. Good ole Mr. Sun strikes again.

July 25th:
The wind sucks. It feels like a giant freaking blow dryer!! And it's hot as hell. The home air-conditioner is on the fritz and the AC repairman charged $200 just to drive by and tell me he needed to order parts.

July 30th:
Been sleeping outside on the patio for 3 nights now, $225,000 house and I can't even go inside. Lomita is the lucky one. Why did I ever come here?

Aug. 4th:
It's 115 degrees. Finally got the air-conditioner fixed today. It cost $500 and gets the temperature down to 85. I hate this stupid state.

Aug. 8th:
If another wise a** cracks, 'Hot enough for you today?' I'm going to strangle him. Damn heat. By the time I get to work, the radiator is boiling over, my clothes are soaking wet, and I smell like baked cat!!

Aug. 9th:
Tried to run some errands after work. Wore shorts, and when sat on the seats in the car, I thought my ass was on fire. My skin melted to the seat. I lost 2 layers of flesh and all the hair on the back of my legs and ass . . . Now my car smells like burnt hair, fried ass, and baked cat.

Aug 10th:
The weather report might as well be a da*n recording. Hot and sunny. Hot and sunny. Hot and sunny. It's been too hot to do **** for 2 damn months and the weatherman says it might really warm up next week. Doesn't it ever rain in this damn state? Water rationing will be next, so my $1700 worth of cactus will just dry up and blow over. Even the cactus can't live in this damn heat.

Aug. 14th:
Welcome to HELL! Temperature got to 115 today. Cactus are dead. Forgot to crack the window and blew the damn windshield out of the car. The installer came to fix it and guess what he asked me??? "Hot enough for you today?" My sister had to spend $1,500 to bail me out of jail. Freaking Texas. What kind of a sick demented idiot would want to live here?? Will write later to let you know how the trial goes
.

Feeling a bit triumphant about someone else's misfortune? Has your country become so divided?

Competition breeds innovation and success.

We really don't expect outsiders to understand.

I am sure Texas has the same problem with transplants coming to their state telling them how to live. As far as the weather...here is a fun Florida joke.

You know, I wish the sentiment of " Houston sucks " actually kept more people out of this town

I was born here and Im almost 50 and Ive never seen anything like this.

To accomodate all the NEW Houstonians new development and infrastructure is going up in places that have been cow pastures and old farm lands for decades

Theres new neighborhoods and schools and infrastructure, bussinesses and municipal expansions going up past Katy, past the Woodlands and past Baytown.

Its nuts, so yea,I wish our sub tropical climate and our flat and vast and hurrincane prone landscape kept people away but no such luck.

California is on and has been on a unsustainable path for years.

Their unfunded liabilities went from 6 billion in 2003 to 325 billion last year and it jumped 22 percent from 2016-2017.
That 325 billion assumes a 8 percent return on their pension investments...thats not going to happen

No good comes from a State chasing off their Middle class and bussineses while offering blanket amnesty to illegals who typically dont pay State income taxes, especially if thats State is California

That revenue that Cali needs to close their huge budget gap can only come from one place, increased taxes, but that will only lead to Cali exporting more of their tax base.

I was just messing with you about Houston. My wife is from there. My only real problem with Houston is its too damn big and crowded. Well that and its sweltering for better than half the year.

The situation in Houston is like every other rapidly growing city. Austin is just as bad. Denver is on its way to being worse. Seattle is crazy crowded. There are conservative states that are booming and conservative states that are doing terribly. Look at Mississippi for example. Similarly, there are liberal states that are booming and liberal states that are not doing well at all. You know what is impressive, a state like Minnesota with its damn near Siberian climate, no oil to speak of, and yet its doing very, very well economically.

Ideologues on both sides have this notion that there is only one way to strong economic growth when in fact there are lots of different ways to strong economic growth. You can see that in the various states in this country that have achieved consistently strong economies. Right now the state with the highest GDP growth rate is liberal Washington state. However, conservative Utah has a consistently strong GDP growth rate as well.

Meanwhile, left-wing bastion Nebraska plunged 4%

We are seeing the same thing in Canada, very conservative Alberta has essentially become a basket case since the decline of oil but Conservative Saskatchewan is still doing well. Ultra-Liberal Quebec is now leading the nation with numbers not seen for the better part of a century but the Liberal Maritimes are continuing their perpetual stagnation.

Which means what?

Apparently, as you can see the supply side business friendly principles Texas legislators have employed for years now are clearly not working....:lamo

Might want to hold your horses a bit their buddy. One quarter doesn't tell us much of anything. California is doing just fine, and has been for some time every since Jerry Brown(D) took over from Arnold Schwarzenegger(R).

You'll notice that in the link I provided for you California is beating Texas in terms of young population growth, but loosing overall. That tells that the people who are primarily moving to Texas is actually old retired people who are looking to avoid taxes and value cheaper living significantly more. That's all well and good, but it's not exactly a good basis for long term economic growth. You're also not dealing with the reality that almost all of Texas' growth is being driving by major cities like Houston, Dallas-Ft Worth, San Antonio, and Austin. All super liberal hot beds.

Texas is not succeeding because of supply side economics. There are all kinds of conservative states trying that, and most of them are failing miserably. Texas is doing well because of their oil industry, warmer weather, Illegal immigration from Mexico(another piece of irony), and the fact that they already have some decently sized major cities that can serve as economic engines.

You really dont need to read into anything, its fairly common knowledge that Cali is exporting their Middle Class, and not just to Texas either.

Here's Tucker Carlson debating a Cali rep who not only admits that Cali is driving off its tax base, he claims its a " good thing "....Lol

And no, the health of Texas economy isnt based on oil, this isnt the 1930s. Oil and Gas is only 10 percent of our GDP and thats when oil is over 80 bucks a barrell

Oil prices started to bottom out over 3 years ago and have yet to rise past the 60 - 70 dollar range that makes oil exploration profitable

OF-COURSE Texas's economic prosperity is tied to Supy Side economics. Bussinesses dont relocate here for the weather.

Its a really simple concept, we incentivize new investment with low tax and regulatory burdens and Bussinesses respond by either relocating here or expanding

Thats creates private sector jobs which creates tax payers which grows the Texas rainy day fund ( Surplus )

California's economic issues and its massive debt are tied to tax and spend policies. It is failing miserably there but Cali's run by Left wing Politicians who under no circumstances will ever question their core ieological principles.

So, its only going to get worse

I never said falling oil prices had no impact on our economy.

I said the Texas's economic prosperity is not dependent on our oil and gas sector.

Our population boom isnt comprised of people that are moving here for Oil jobs, and considering what the drop in oil prices did to other economies, Texas weathered that storm rather well

You know as well as I do Texas has a highly diverse economy, and Im sure you know ( you may not want to admit it ) that California's current path is unsustainable.

I said the Texas's economic prosperity is not dependent on our oil and gas sector.

Why did growth plunge in line with the plunge in oil prices? Can you explain this?

I guess not! :lamo
