Please note all numbers are rounded for ease of discussion.

2016 Federal expenditures were about $4 trillion dollars.

2016 estimates for USA population are 325 million people.

In order to be fair, everyone in the US should have paid the feds about $12K in 2016.

Did you pay your $12K?

If you include social security and medicare, then I paid a little more than $12k. My wife paid less. And my kids paid absolutely nothing, so as a family we're way behind.

You can't include social security and medicare. They are insurance policies, not taxes.

My wife and I together did pay our 24k.

I got a good (bad?) bonus this year, so....I paid that and more. However, not enough to cover 12k per family member.

You kids need to pick up the slack, get to work.

I didn't think our nation adopted a rule or law that said we all pay the same? I only made $9600 last year it'd be hard for me to pay $12,000.

The original question included social security and medicare expenses by the feds. Why would you not include them in the payments answer?

Not only paid my 12k, but apparently several other people's. Not a thank you note from any of them.

Of course that wouldn't be the definition of fair. Fair would be based on a % of income or wealth, not a flat net amount. You also included children and other non-money makers.

Oh gosh yes.

And thanks to my son being employed last year, I lost my head of household status. What a creep.:lamo

He is back full time at school, thank goodness.:lamo

Social security and medicare expenditures make up about half of the $4 trillion OP mentioned. So if those aren't included, each person's share is only $6,000.

Why would it be hard for you? The government CONSTANTLY pays more than it makes so everyone else should too.

Then I paid way more than my share.

Right? They could at least send us some cookies or something. :)

I paid them with a smile. But they demanded money!

My accountant does mine and I sign in the blind. I don't care. I can't change it, and why ruin a perfectly good day?!

Interesting theory, except that 324 million people are not taxpayers. The tax base is about 1/2 of that.... so the boggie is closer to $25K (FICA and FIT)

Oh, it's much worse then that. Roughly 45% of those with taxable income actually pay ZERO in federal income taxes.

No I did not pay 12K this year in taxes.
I am retired but I still paid my fair share.
And while we are at it, I have never cost the federal government a dime my entire life. Not an unemployment check, no welfare or food stamps. No Medicaid, and no grants for education etc..... I did it the old fashion way, I earned it so as far as the 12K the government thinks I should be on the hook for, well.....they can stick it where the sun don't shine.
