Right after the Brexit vote, the most Googled question in the UK was "what is the EU"? It seems the vote was an emotional one, not one based on facts or rationality.
It seems that a lot of ignorant people got over there just had their feelings of xenophobia/racism exploited to push through the Brexit vote. But now that Britons are starting to realize what they just did, it seems there is a very significant backlash against UKIP. The party just got eviscerated in local elections:

There could be a similar pattern here in the US.
