Here's how the Trump administration is saving money to increase the military budget.

Just one example of many:

Delta Regional Authority

The DRA’s mission is to improve the economic lives of 10 million people who live in the 252 counties and parishes in eight states from Louisiana to Missouri and Kentucky. The 17-year-old agency has helped to create or save around 17,000 jobs, according to its website. DRA, working with the Economic Development Administration, invested $235,000 that will support 115 jobs along the Arkansas and Louisana border. The money will be used to improve U.S. 65 and Interstate 20, along with ports on the Mississippi River.

So it's a "make work" agency that doesn't really need to exist because there are other federal agencies that handle that specific function. It's good to see an actually conservative government in place. I wish there were cuts to the military but you take what you can get.

How Conservative is a gov't that takes all the money from budget cuts plus some, and adds it to the defense budget?

Here's an example why NIH is getting cut.

Neuroscientist Stanley Rapoport hasn’t had much luck with his co-authors.
Recently, we’ve reported on multiple retractions of papers co-authored by Rapoport after three different first authors were found to have committed misconduct. Now, the fallout from one of those cases had led to four more retractions, bringing Rapoport’s total to 12.
The latest batch of retractions stem from the actions of Jagadeesh Rao.
Here’s the first notice, issued by Psychopharmacology:

So you really think that NIH is under the knife because they don't reach the Trump/Bannon standards of integrity?

They are getting cut because these idiots want to dismantle the government.

This sort of thing makes them harder to defend.

NIH, like every other program, was going to get cut, whether it performed perfectly or not. I haven't heard a speck of debate about the worth or the merits of these departments before cuts were proposed. It's a demolition job, not a pruning.

Seems to me like an agency that spends $235,000 to support 115 jobs while costing us 5 cents each is one worth keeping.

Meanwhile, the increase in the military budget rounds out to about $187 per person.

The savings made from cutting programs for the old and the young will almost cover the cost of his Florida weekends for this year!

Yep. It isn't about saving money. Anybody who buys that argument is an idiot.

I don't disagree. My point is just that this makes the counter argument harder.

Unfortunately, they are not listening to counterarguments.

Reducing spending tax revenues is good.

It's almost comical how many rules and regulations impact everything.

Google something as common as a doorway and ask how many regulations impact them and you get more than a million hits.

Our government has run amuck.

In school, one of my classmates was a history major who noted that there were no building codes in Ancient Greece. However, if a building collapsed and killed anyone, the builder was also killed.

The result? The Parthenon stood intact until it was blown up in modern times.

I feel that in many cases, the rules and regulations in force today do more to make the rules makers happy than to help the population.

That (bolded above) is not what the Trump budget proposal does - it recommends spending the same (or more) but simply on different priorities. What we have is a POTUS from the party for a bigger federal government taking over from a POTUS from the party for a huge federal government. The projected annual federal deficit is likely to remain pretty much the same.

No argument there.

I oppose the flow of huge of sums to a central point allowing the generous allocation to those that are only too willing to steal it.

Defense of the country pretty much requires a centralized solution. Almost everything else could be accomplished locally by the States.

Every state seems to have its own agency to protect the environment and yet there is also the EPA at the Federal Level.

I see this as unneeded duplication. Maybe I'm missing something that is not apparent. Having a federal agency that does exactly the same thing does pool a bunch of cash for the zealots to liberate.

For the zealots, I suppose that is reason enough.

Can you, or anyone else, explain what defense "resources" that we lack to beat a "terrorist" enemy that has no navy, no airpower and a rag tag, at best, army in well over a decade? What we need is to admit that the military cannot defeat an ideology or build nations - the military can destroy stuff and kill folks anywhere on the planet with amazing efficiency and currently lacks nothing to do just that. Playing "nation builder" does not work as a battle plan no matter what new toys that you give to the military.

Today we have ground forces who cannot deploy and air squadrons who cannot fly because there's been no money for maintaining/replacing equipment.

I cannot nor would I ever attempt to defend that line of thinking.

The military is designed to break things and kill people.

Asking them to do the things you describe is like using an accordion to drive a nail.

and yet it's precisely what the government tried to use the military to do in Iraq, and, earlier, in Vietnam. The results speak for themselves.

Being a member of the Viet Nam generation, this lesson was not lost on me.
