I know numerous people who are on the receiving end of New York State’s very generous benefit program. It is easy to qualify and get stuff from NYS if your income is low enough.

I understand that the overwhelming majority of recipients of NYS benefits have needs and are struggling. But, there are more and more individuals that are not struggling, applying for and getting many kinds of benefits. Shame on them? Maybe? They qualify, they paid taxes most of their life and what they are saying is, I’ve been paying for other people’s benefits, and it’s about time I get mine. In addition to that, all you need is identification and a rent receipt from a non-family member to establish your residency in NY and collect benefits. There is no waiting period for new residents.

In New York State, the SNAP Program (formerly food stamps) now allows you to have more money in a checking or savings account, or even a retirement account, without affecting your eligibility for SNAP benefits. As of January 1, 2008, most households applying for SNAP benefits no longer have to pass a savings/resource test in order to get SNAP benefits. This means having money in a savings, checking or retirement account, or having other resources, will not keep you from being eligible for SNAP benefits, as long as you meet the income guidelines.

I decided to go online and start an application process designed to help determine if Dick and Jane (both 60 years old) were eligible for benefits.

The total value of their estate is about $500,000 (home, cars and 401k’s).

I reported 100,000 in Dick and Jane’s individual 401k’s. They each own (paid for) 25,000 cars. There home is worth about 250,000. They have $5,000 in their checking/bank accounts, but I believe they can have much more based on the statement above. They both work part time earning 12,000 a year each, and have no other sources of income.

They each pay 50.00 a month for medical bills, and a total of 1,000 a month for housing expenses (includes taxes).

awesome research!

But no know what? Nobody cares, unfortunately. People will look at this and there response will be "Hmmm, then why aren't I getting more from the goverment?!"

Wealthy, intelligent, competent people who live in New York should take note and be on the lookout for great places to live outside that state. Abandon it. Let it go back to the Earth. I would advise the same for those who live in California.

its OK for CEO's with 100 million to make 100 million more ever year.

And jsut to inform you, home and car (car is some places) have never been a limit on SNAP.

And its a good thing to allow savings, this allows people when they need extra cash or to retire, they have the money.

The previous program was designed to make sure poeple never had any money and never saved. ($2000 limit) All part the
bourgeois plan to impoverish the people.

This is true of many such gov't "assistance" programs. It is simply that most folks do not expect to qualify for any gov't help, so they do not apply, or even enquire about "the rules" or the number of such gov't programs available. IMHO, we ran out of "priority" catagories of truely needy folks, several programs ago, but that would not bode well for the gov't "help" agencies that must increase their annual budgets, staff, power and areas of assistance - if they ever actually solved anything, they would find themselves in the unemployment line, rather that get excellent pay, promotional oppotunities and benefits. USA, USA, USA...

Absolutely, many people around here have, or are planning on leaving NY. I know several that have headed to North Carolina (Asheville area, & Phoenix for jobs). Lots of Yankees down there. I've been there a couple of times. If it wasn't for the kids and grandchildren, I'd be out of New York. (unless they raise those income thresholds a bit:lol:

It does make me think food stamps are more for buying democrats votes then feeding people. They also enjoy the farmers support for them.

I bought three years worth of seeds yesterday for $95. I'll need to learn to capture seeds from my gardens for perpetual growth next and never have to buy them again. Almond, Pear, Orange, and peach trees will produce this summer, lemon, apricot and plum next year :). Combined with slithering chickens ( damn rattlers) I can get buy with no food purchases.

You're right, not much outrage in the forum. Maybe the problem is that they don't live in New York.

....

I like the part that says that getting food stamps won't hurt your immigration status.[/s]

If they are here illegally then they are ineligible to work (legally) which means that they aren't paying taxes yet they get this benefit.

Why not we can raise the debt limit to infinity.
