Proposal for 3rd Presidential Term

Did Egypt under Hosni Mubarak outperform us because the President stayed in power for over 29 years? Tunisia under Ben Ali? Russia under President (the PM, then president) Putin? Syria under the Assads? Maybe you were joking about that?

The problem is term limits eliminate a legislative body's institutional memory. The shorter the term the more powerful the lobbyists are because they are the only ones who know how to do things like write a bill or put together a budget.

The Republicans have a double whammy right now because the house doesn't know how to do anything and neither does a very very inexperienced executive branch.

When W became president he used his dad's people and got seriously busy right out of the gate. Experience is power. Experience is efficiency.

If Trump ever gets to stoop Melania in the West Wing again, let us know. I feel for her, a Eastern European that thought a good dinner in her old country was luxury, coming to America, marrying a millionaire, becoming the First Lady and now snickered at and whispered about because he husband thinks he can grope/fornicate any woman he wants and lust after his own daughter... it's got to be miserable.... :peace

You make a good point. I don't think there is any good way to change the maximum limit to 10 years from 8. Even if you changed presidential terms to 5 years, all that would happen is that both years 4 and 5 would be all campaigning, all of the time - no governing.

If you were to make a change in that direction then it would be either changing to three four year terms, or two 6 year terms. I don't think either of those would gain much public support.

What might get support is changing it to a single term of 6 years. It gives a new President a chance to get good at the job and accomplish something. He/She would never be worried about re-election so could focus on the Job at hand. Both parties would be having full primaries every election cycle.

I would have to hear all of the arguments but I may be inclined to support a change like that.

Only reason they dont out preform us is because the west is always destabilizing the region with wars and regime changes :lamo:lamo:lamo. Libya is a good example
 
No... the term limit is a feature to prevent tyranny, otherwise we could have a Putin situation.

It might work in a country that has an active, educated political culture... but the U.S. is very lost right now. We elected a reality TV President with no real qualifications for the job, all based on rhetoric. This would be a very bad time in our history to eliminate term limits. Our democratic compass has been almost totally compromised.

I'd rather go the other direction and limit the President to one term along with Congress, the Supreme court (make it a 9 year term, with a new Justice every year) and every Cabinet Secretary (4 years).

The greatest President we have had in the last 150 years was elected four times and served 12 years. There should be no limit on the will of the people to elect a president of their preference.

I would be against this proposal because it still places a limit. There should be no limit beyond a four year term and the ability to get reelected by the American people.

Great, then Obama can run again, and Bill Clinton, and GW. Bush, each of them would make a better president than the Oaf in Office. And a 2 year term is a waste of time.

George W bush started a war that has been going on for more than 10 years and has killed thousands, definitely worse than Trump. I don't even like Trump but people are really acting like he is the worst.
 
As much as I like President Trump, I'm wholly against a 3rd term...look at the damage done during the fdr years.
