"Is the Presidency Driving Us Nuts?"

Someone that has gone bankrupt 4 times is not a good business man.
He's telling you exactly who he is.
Him saying he's the least racist person is right up there with Nixon saying " I am not a crook".

You don't understand the nature of business.

Most ventures end in bankruptcy.

Is the Presidency Driving Us Nuts?

Only if you're a progressive/liberal/dem/pink-hat-wearer ...

I am fairly certain that is not true. Most ventures may very well fail, but that doesn’t mean they file bankruptcy. I had a few failed business attempts in my life before I finally succeeded. I never filed bankruptcy.

So he simply used the available laws differently than you.

That’s fine. But I was addressing your claim that most ventures end in bankruptcy.

I think you are wordsmithing. We both know that he used bankruptcy to mean most start-ups fail at some level.

OK, I should have said most new businesses fail. They don't necessarily end up bankrupt, but that is a tool available.

I read a byline today that stated "in every progressive there is a totalitarian screaming to come out."

Personally, the media if I let it would drive me nuts.

Trump ran a very shocking campaign in the things he said. I don't think the media knew exactly what to do with him. They gave him extra-ordinary coverage for every asshat thing he said. From the size of his "hands" to being able to stand on 5th Ave. in New York and shoot someone.

So the media is the victim here?

I think it's completely the opposite - Trump is doing and saying and selling whatever he wants - truth be damned and Fox is just the Trump media machine. All smoke and mirrors - nothing to see here.........

Truth be damned should be the NY times and CNN's slogan. All cable news lies. the juggernaught of the left wing MSM the 4th estate has become a 5th column, and thats far more dangerous than some dumb trump tweet.

To believe that, your worldview has to be completely off the rails.

How so specifically? can you intellectually argue your point or are you just being a mean girl and not actually contributing to the conversation again? Do you even understand what the conversation is about?

I agree. CNN is very bad! They try to defame Trump. Very sad!

This is actually a fantastic point, I agree with all of it, great post. Unfortunately, the power of the cult of personality that Trump has created has driven a division that far exceeds what a president should ever be able to do. When folks hate each other over which political party they support, something's wrong. Disagree, sure, it's been that way forever...but the hate I see, and correct me if I'm wrong, between supporters of different leanings is out of control. My honest prayer for you guys is that the next president you get is mind numbingly boring...you guys could use the break. ;)

You have it all wrong. It is not the president that is causing division but rather it is the propaganda wing of the Democratic party; main stream media. For example, the Russian collusion narrative created both paranoia and division, yet there is no evidence, one year later, that is in proportion to all the outraged and paranoia, generated. It was scam by the Democrats to throw sands in the gears of Trump. Trump did not start that.

If you look at illegal immigration both President Clinton and President Obama, has a similar view on immigration. Go back and read their statements. President Obama set the record for deportations. He was using common sense. The media propaganda machine was silent, until Trump was elected, and did similar things as past Democrat Presidents. Immigration did not divide, until the propaganda machine was used.

If you wish to learn the truth, run an experiment. The link below is the official White House online news letter. It tells you everything the President does each day. Read this for one week. Along with this, shut off the news for one week, You will feel less divided. Then, if you are honest with yourself, will know the sources of the inner division.

Howdy, WW... welcome to DP, don't think we've chatted yet...and while I disagree with you, I appreciate your civility, I always give props to Trump supporters that show it.

That said, no, I don't think I can take your challenge, because I simply do not trust the Trump administration to tell me the truth, perhaps even less so than I trust MSM, the simple reason being that fact checking statistics favor the sources I subscribe to. I certainly do NOT blindly trust MSM, and spend a lot of time thinking about what is reported, research, fact check, etc. I'm not sure I could downgrade my process to simply ignoring the media and believing whatever the Whitehouse says in their daily newsletter. But, I will bookmark the link you've given me, and consider it, along with everything else, so thanks for it.

I disagree with your analysis of where the division is coming from. One can put aside all media reporting and opinion, and simply play back what's on video and what was written in Twitter, and can quickly determine that Trump certainly is a major source of division, and a lot of what the media gets criticized for painting in a bad light over is simply reacting to the latest gaffe committed.

I know when everything is a mess, you can point to examples of what "the other side" is doing, and shove all the blame there, but the reality is both sides are amping this up, both left and right politicians and left and right media. The question Americans should be asking themselves is what is it about a divided America that is so useful that both sides are engaging in and encouraging it? Not sure if that's going to be easily figured out from the Whitehouse newsletter...then again, I haven't read it yet. :)

Well sort of its a daily show of crap. I mean we saw Obama alot but not every day and Bush Jr we rarely saw unless it was some event. Trump don't care about no one but himself and he is producing a TV show using the media and his base as his subjects. Wake up people. So sad!

Jay Cost at National Review argues that in fewer than 70 years, we have developed a “pervasive sense of presidential omnipotence and omniscience,” the notion that a President is all-powerful and everywhere, and that this may be driving us all crazy. In a republic, centering government power around one person and making that person a celebrity superstar is not very republican, he says, and adds:

The fact that any president could rile up the nation as Trump has is an illustration of how overgrown the executive power has become. The notion of “coequal branches” is a 20th-century invention. For most of the nation’s history prior to the Great Depression, the president played second fiddle to Congress. This was by constitutional design. The Framers envisioned the legislature, not the president, as the fount of republican authority, and they designed a government accordingly.

Cost observes that when Teddy Roosevelt reinvigorated the Presidency, his opponents mocked him for it, and he blames “Progressive Democrats” assuming power under Wilson and certainly under FDR for “giving the president a leadership role that he had only occasionally possessed before.”

He also notes that FDR’s admin was the first to exploit mass-communications technology. With successive admins, “Presidential exposure has scaled up accordingly.” His opinion:

I think one reason for these bipartisan manifestations of presidential derangement syndrome is the mythological foundation of the modern presidency. A core operating assumption of the office is that one human being can possibly speak for the national interest generally understood. That is fanciful. At most, the president will always express a particular view of the national interest, thereby creating the potential for cognitive dissonance in a sizable minority of the country. Because he is now able to speak to us so often, this mental discomfort can be nearly constant for his opponents. And because he is now so powerful, he also makes it seem to them that he is ruining the country. Trump & Obama Derangement Syndrome Rooted in Myth of President as King | National Review

I’m with the author: I too hope that the “lemonade” here is that perhaps the Trump administration is exposing institutional flaws that will lead to the scaling back of the Executive and the reformation and restoration of the Congress.

The problem being, of course, where does the power go, and what do they then do with it?

The president was elected and gets to generally do as he pleases: but the whole point of checks and balances is that it's up to the legislature and the judiciary to keep the power of the executive branch in check.

Ironically, the OP is admitting that republicans in congress are not doing their constitutionally-obligated job of holding the president accountable. Well, DUH, witness tampering and obstructing an active investigation deep into the presidents inner circle is essentially dereliction of duty.
