Understanding the Electoral College

Actually I have been thinking about this.
She wouldn't have won.

The winner calls for the majority of the vote. That means 51%.
She only got 48%.

It still would have gone to the house and trump would have won the election.

Most people that want a true democracy and want to get rid of the EC just want a simple majority. IE: Whoever gets the most votes. Doesn't have to be 51%. Just the most votes.

Here's a question, what happens if the electoral college decides to just vote Hillary in anyway? It is their right to do so, after all.

They are called “faithless electors” And they could legally get away with it. At most they would have to pay a small fine in their State. But the Constitution doesnt disallow that scenario. So while I doubt it will happen, they could vote in Hillary December 19th.

Do you think eferyone in this thread will switch their opinion of the electoral college if that happens? I do...

Yea that is stupid.
They want a plurality of votes.

I dunno.
Their team has 538 members so they could wear down their opponents with an endless supply of fresh substitutions.

Yeah, but all those members aren't working in the same direction. Heck, you even have some position groups (like Maine) who aren't even on the same page.

Its funny, the founders were against democracies, but knew the people must have a voice in government and they provided the solution to that problem.

they created a house of representatives to give voice to the people to protect their interest.

they created a senate of states to give voice to the state governments to protect their interest.

then they created an electoral college to give a shared voice to the people and the states.

however over time the states have lost their voice which they had via the senate and now that senate has been turned into another voice of the people .

now we have those who wish to take from the states which created the constitution, there last bit of representation and turn it over into another voice of the people.

FUNNY ISN'T IT!.....the founders sought to avoid democracy as a form of government because it was not a good and stable government which is why our system was divided three ways known as a republic of mixed government.

now we have people who only want their concerns, their voices heard and nothing else......welcome to democracy the very thing the founders sought to avoid!

Only 538?
Sounds like Joe Paterno's taxi squad.

It gets to the heart of representation. Like taxation without representation.

Why should Montana or north Dakota remain with the USA?

It's a losing bet since I constantly mocked Democrats for whining about Bush losing the popular vote but winning the E-COLLEGE. You're another person who has dramatically embarrassed themselves.

Sure it's a long bet. Sure it is.

I have all your posts to show otherwise.

There are only a handful of cases in the last couple of hundred years where electors didn't vote in line with what the people wanted. In half of those cases it was because the candidate they were sworn to had died. In no case was the outcome of the election affected.

The electoral is an anachronism. It made sense when the states actually mattered. They don't. Even worse the electoral college system, more specifically the winner-take-all aspect of the EC system that most states implement, make most states largely irrelevant and the election decided in the "battleground states." That effectively disenfranchises a significant amount of the populace.

We should either go to a popular vote system or a system where states apportion their EC votes based on the popular vote in the state.

I see your point but don't totally agree. Case in point is the latest presidential election. Did you not notice that some states that are not normally battleground states became very important?

And btw what was so ****ing important about New Hampshire in the November election this time? It's not like it has many electoral votes.

If the people are willing to call for a constitutional amendment, such a thing could be done.

But the politicians don't want it changed. And for those in power now it worked in their favor. So you can foget 'bout it.

That's the only reason liberals want to dump it. They don't actually respect the Constitution.

And the republicans would be complaining and want to dump it if Trump lost. What else is new?

Seem to remember Trump was complaining about EC until it worked in his favor.

Trump isn't part of this conversation. Just because I voted for him doesn't mean I agree with everything, or believe his a Constitution scholar. I wouldn't be complaining if Trump lost due to the Electoral College, in face I didn't expect him to win.

This "popular" popular-vote-crap does not matter one bit. However in the minds of morons who would vote for obama or hilliary it gives them another reason to act like bigger morons in the streets.

There are a lot of jackazzes running around telling everyone how many years they've studied the US Constitution and then they turn around and label the Electoral College as, "strange."
Makes you wonder if these self-proclaimed experts also label The Second Amendment as, "strange."

The bottom line is until dumbbell Americans realize the value and beauty of The US Constitution and can let others know Their Constitution is Not For Sale, Trade or Rent you'll have an endless supply of misguided, lost in space morons who'll stand for nothing and fall for anything...Like what dropped out of marx, ayers and soro's butts.

You and I both know the people aren't anywhere near motivated to change the electoral college. There are plenty more important things that the average American cares about.

Every year people cry about the electoral college when it doesn't work for them. Then a few years down the road it works for them and then the other side complains. It's really nothing but just sore losers being sore losers and it happens on both sides all the time.

At this point, people are just whining for the sake of Whining. The electoral college is a thing of sophistication and beauty.

Perhaps you should explain that to your president elect...

Well, Not for Sale, Trade, or Rent. Unless it's the 4th Amendment right? Because Terrorist...

I completely agree that the EC should remain, but let's not play here. Our 4th Amendment rights are being violated as we speak. Heck, half of us on this site are probably flagged for one statement or other taken out of context. I like to imagine the NSA agent watching me is named Larry, he owns a Labradoodle, and enjoys paintball on the weekends.

But thats ok, they keep us safe from something that is statistically less likely than mistakenly getting shot by our police officers in the course of their duties.

Actually its a mechanism of the 1700's from a world which no longer exists.

The Electoral College is a piece of crap.

Any system (and this one is not the only one) that allows the winner to not get the most votes...stinks.

I don't care what the excuses are, I don't care about states' rights in this...if you do not get the most votes, you should not be POTUS...period.

BTW, I am neither dem nor rep.
