Jason Miller, an adviser to President Trump’s reelection campaign, said in an interview published Friday evening that Joe Biden is “actually a very good debater,” appearing to run counter to the GOP’s confidence that the former vice president would hand Trump an embarrassing gaffe that could spark a negative news cycle.

“Joe Biden is actually a very good debater. He doesn’t have as many gaffes as he does in his everyday interviews,” Miller told The Washington Post. “I would make the argument that Joe Biden would even be the favorite in the debates since he’s been doing them for 47 years.”

The Trump campaign and its Republican allies have been eager to alter a news cycle that has focused on the inability to push a coronavirus relief package through Congress and the president’s most recent controversial remarks and have floated the idea that a televised debate could be just the kind of event they need.

This guy will probably be fired soon for telling the truth. Which is ironic, considering that Trump himself in 2012 acknowledged that Biden is a very good debater. But the "Trump will destroy Dementia Biden in the debates" narrative has been set by Trump and his goons in right wing media, so the bar has been drastically lowered for Biden, which will be to his benefit when he slaps Trump around in the debates.

I don't recall who it was, but about 2 weeks ago I read someone else that said the same thing. Looking forward to them.

It depends on what your meaning of “is” is. The last debate I’m aware of was Obama’s second term. That was ~ 8 years ago, and 8 years of declining mental acuity.

Whatever happens in the debates, Trump supporters will say that Trump won, some Biden supporters will say that Biden won, and everybody else--nonpartisans and some Biden supporters--will point out who really won.

In any case, an honest consensus won't be happening on this forum.

Trump didn't win a single debate in 2015/2016. He yelled a lot, threatened to jail political opponents, and spouted off whack job conspiracy theories. And yet, Republicans thought he won every debate. Goes to show what their "priorities" truly are.

Were you asleep throughout the primaries, as well as the debate against Sanders?

It's Trump who hasn't debated anyone in 4 years.

Joe Biden may have been good in debates in previous years when his cognitive state was still good, but he's going to be absolutely destroyed in a debate. Trump will be the gorilla in the room, beating Biden over the head, leaving Biden as a mumbling, bumbling wreck. Although none of that matters. The far left will vote against Trump while moderates and righties will vote against Senile Joe.

The meaning of "is" is is, unless it isn't.

In normal times I'd tell Trump to f' off. Trump is screwing himself more each day. But now, I think I've changed my mind. There will be no audience. Just Trump vs Biden, and Trump will not have crowd reaction. Trump will get hammered in this venue...several interviews he's done in the last few weeks demonstrate that. Trump needs to feed off of adulation, and he won't get any in debates this year. Instead, hours will be spent after the debate demonstrating how inept Trump is when he really has to come up with answers...or even a plan for what he will do in the next 4 years.

When I watch 15 minutes of Trump, I get 14 minutes of gaffes, lies, and insanity. !5 minutes of Biden yields 30s of the same. I don't agree with Biden's politics, but he's not a moron.

The slow realization that you’re supposed to raise expectations for your opponent, not set them so low he wins by default.

I believe it's Trump that actually doesn't want the debates. His team has been floating the idea of more debates, with FOX hacks making up the moderation team. Trump's team know he is a disaster when allowed to talk publicly for more than five minutes.

Obviously he knows Biden's camp will not accept him getting to decide which anchors moderate the debate, or there being a debate to help Trump effect early voting, and that's the point. Once Biden's team rejects these terms Trump keeps trying to dictate, it would not surprise me to see them cry the debates are rigged, and then back out of them and blame Biden.

The idiot couldn't even tell Sean Hannity of all people what his agenda was for a potential second term, because he has nothing. Imagine when Biden goes after him for his joke of a "record"? Trump will go ballistic.

Biden is a gaffemeister for sure, but the thing is he understands how politics work, so in a debate about policy he can easily outmaneuver Trump who doesn't know much about government despite the position he currently holds. The other thing is Trump doesn't actually debate anything; he throws out sales pitches and other forms of hyperbole.

The only thing people remember about Trump's debate performance against Clinton was his "If I were president, you'd be in jail!" comment (which was a lie, of course).

When it comes to actual policy...he has nothing. Outside of his empty "Make America Great Again!" slogan, he's an empty suit filled with bogus conspiracy theories meant to rile up the rubes.

He's not a details kind of guy. He'll certainly make the pitch, but he isn't the one who is going to tell you how it works.

I buy that. The stress of Trump’s recent string of catastrophic failures seems to be aggravating whatever his condition is. Don’t want to risk having an episode on live TV.

Trump lies. You forgot the #1 LW mantra. BTW: Biden in 2012 is not Biden in 2020.

What's going on is every is saying that Joe Biden is a bad communicator and this lowers everyone's expectations.

Trump doesn't want that because it's hard to beat someone who has such low expectations. It would be impossible for Trump to beat Joe Biden cause Joe Biden's expectations are so low.

So Trump's aide is trying to play up Joe Biden's debating skills.

I've been saying this for a while. If the GOP keeps painting Biden as a senile gaffe machine, if he comes across as a normal old dude, people will be pleasantly surprised.

Not a great strategy when your candidate is constantly creating word salad.

Reverse psychology, though it is true that he is a decent debater, he doesn't think so and would not say so without the approval of Trumpnazi

The Bernie people did the same thing. Then Biden won their only one-on-one debate and slammed the door on the primaries.

Since I just read it in passing it wasn't some big moment on anything, but I do know it was after seeing him speaking somewhere recently. So no, not 8 years ago.

biden must ask "are you better off than you were 4 years ago"
and then state the long list of reasons we are not

i still believe joe should have required tRump to release his last 10 years of federal tax returns as a pre-condition to participate in the debates
when tRump refused
biden's absence would be on the donald
