WASHINGTON — The Postal Service on Friday announced a substantial reorganization meant to increase efficiency as Democratic lawmakers demanded an inquiry into whether changes by President Trump’s postal officials could threaten the effective use of mail-in ballots for the November election. Louis DeJoy, the postmaster general and a major donor to Mr. Trump’s campaigns, was named to oversee the service in May. On Friday, he shifted top personnel, including some decades-long veterans of the Postal Service, and made changes to its organizational structure. “The new organization will align functions based on core business operations and will provide more clarity and focus on what the Postal Service does best; collect, process, move and deliver mail and packages,” the Postal Service said in a statement. The changes come at a time of heightened scrutiny for Mr. DeJoy, as critics charge that changes to overtime policies and other previous actions threaten to slow delivery of ballots when millions of people are expected to vote by mail because of the coronavirus pandemic. In comments on Friday to the Postal Service’s board of governors, Mr. DeJoy said the changes he had made — including limitations on overtime — would not delay the timely delivery of ballots.

Seven Democratic members of Congress urged the inspector general for the Postal Service to audit the new policies imposed by the postmaster general, saying they were concerned the changes “pose a potential threat to mail-in ballots and the 2020 general election.” In a letter to the inspector general, Tammy L. Whitcomb, the lawmakers referred to reports that Mr. DeJoy had limited overtime pay and made other changes that critics say have slowed mail delivery and made it less reliable. The lawmakers urged Ms. Whitcomb to investigate the effect of the changes on the delivery of critical mail, including medication, paychecks and bills. “These delays also pose a threat to the November election, particularly during the coronavirus pandemic when millions of Americans are expected to choose to vote by mail rather than wait in long lines on Election Day,” the lawmakers wrote. Democrats, including those who signed the letter, have charged that Mr. DeJoy is doing the bidding of the president, who has long attacked the Postal Service on Twitter.

Just so things are clear. In May 2020 Donald Trump appointed Louis DeJoy, a core supported who has donated more than $2.5 million to Trumps campaign, to the position of Postmaster General. The 11 member USPS Board of Governors, Trump appointed 9 of the 11 members, approved Trumps choice of DeJoy as PG. It is well known that Donald Trump wants to severely limit mail-in voting. But since that is up to each individual state, Trump turned to DeJoy. The new PG immediately set about de-constructing the Postal Service and forbidding any overtime by employees. Without overtime, USPS mail doesn't get delivered as it has been delivered for decades. With the COVID pandemic, mail-in voting is the safest method and volume is expected to be heavy. Unlike other presidential elections, unless this is another blue tsunami, the election outcome will not be known on election night. No one knows how long it will take to tabulate the nailed-in votes. Trump has been setting the table for claiming fraud, due to not knowing the election result on election night. What Trump doesn't tell you is that he and DeJoy are busy ruining the USPS to make matters even worse.

I know it's anecdotal, by my USPS mail service is now running 4 days to a week later than normal.
 
One political party is literally forced to work around the open cheating of the party in charge. If that isn't Banana Republic, nothing is.
 
People rely on the mail for pills, checks, etc. These efforts to sabotage it in an attempt to tilt the election are extraordinarily destructive. GOP nihilism kills, and not just the 160K on the COVID counters.

We all support your need for mail in voting. We know that 76% of Republicans will be voting in person and the balance are absentee ballots (which is not mail in voting).

USPS isn't structured to handle a country wide mail in voting system. We know that about 28% of addresses are no good and we know that about 20-25% will never make it to a polling station. If Democrats want to blame Trump for the limitations of USPS then they should all be voting by mail.

Then we can spend the next 4 years listening too why they lost again. Why is it that only Democrats find it so difficult to find a polling station or don't have any way to get to one?

But you can bet that all Republicans support your need to vote by mail. Best of luck with that endeavor and it will never be mandated.

Delivering pieces of mail to and from millions of American households is exactly what it’s structured to do.

For 200+ years the post office was able to deliver the mail. Then Trump showed up.

Maybe it’s unprecedented incompetence, maybe it’s unprecedented malice, bottom line is that this guy can’t run ****.

They can't even deliver packages on time during Christmas when you have UPS, FedX, and others in the mix to help, but you think that USPS will be able to stand the strain of being exclusive to handle a few hundred million ballots at one time?

Then you should vote by mail. I support your right to do so while Republicans will be at the polling stations to cast their votes.

While you have decided to ignore the obvious shortcomings of USPS to handle this kind of influx, most know better. You already have about 26% in bad addresses and you can expect another 25% that will never reach a polling station.

Just the influx of email dropped the USPS deliveries by 50% alone. Thats when USPS tried to tax email and it failed. Now you have a reduced staff in comparison to a growing population and you think they can manage this kind of over load?

Help yourself. Nobody is stopping you.

The very first mail service seems to be in Ancient Egypt, in 2400 BCE.

The greatest country in history apparently can’t get the nearly 5000 year old practice of mail right.

Could only be possible by design.

Per the USPS, “ The Postal Service processes and delivers 472.1 million mail pieces each day.”

The idea that they can’t handle <100 million ballots over a three month period is absurd.

If the post office is no longer able to deliver mail, it’s because Trump is the most incompetent imbecile the federal government had ever seen.
 
The goal is to so cripple the USPS that they can go to Congress and say that mail in voting can’t function and all votes have to be in person. Then they will collude with Republicans in state governments to close as many polling places in Democrat heavy districts as possible claiming the need to protect against the pandemic. The very few polling places will remain will feature extremely long lines and waits.

Then Trump will deploy his riot-gear equipped secret police to those polling locations and the instant a voter gets agitated with the artificially created long lines, the Trump Thugs will declare there to be a “riot” and start gassing and shooting people with baton rounds.

Every US state allows mail-in, absentee voting, but typically only under certain circumstances. For example, in the past, many states only allowed you to get an absentee ballot if you were deployed with the US armed forces, were going to be out of town on Election Day or were ill. That makes up less than 20% of the voting process.

But now at least 35 states have changed their mail-in absentee voting policies, allowing all voters to apply for an absentee ballot to cut down on the risk of spreading the virus.

The difference is, the outdated address list for those who have never used a mail in ballot coupled with the influx of mail that USPS isn't staffed or ready for.

But don't take this as my resistance to Democrats pushing mail in voting. They will never be able to mandate it so you can count on Republicans going to polling stations. I support your right to use USPS and ballot harvesting to guarantee your vote is counted.

To be clear, President Trump did not appoint DeJoy. The PO board did that.

The members he nominated serve with the approval of the Senate.
