Does this mean that the left will now be forced to cancel The American Journal of Psychiatry?

And if someone has this surgery, if affects you how?

I can't speak for Zimmer, but the only issue I have with anyone transitioning is when we're talking about kids under the age of 18. Anyone who's a legal adult can do whatever they like with their bodies, but it's flat out child abuse as far as I'm concerned for any parent to condone their child doing so.

.

Looks like a lot of people are seriously ****ed now... their mental issues remain, plus they have seriously mutilated themselves.

Your source is exagerating. Here is what AJP actually said:

...the conclusion that “the longitudinal association between gender-affirming surgery and lower use of mental health treatment lends support to the decision to provide gender-affirming surgeries to transgender individuals who seek them” is too strong.

Your source is known for exaggeration is misleading statements, and its source is just bat**** insane. Now, I know you prefer Goebbels media type propaganda, but most of us actually prefer facts. In this case, after the authors went back and asked further questions, they could no longer conclude that surgery helps in 2 areas.

Why do people care about what other people do with their bodies?
You don't believe people should feel concern for others? If you were to come across someone self-treating their cancer with colloidal silver based on an article they read, you'd just shrug your shoulders and say "whatever, it's their body"?

Should we stop caring about alcoholics, drug addicts, people who try to commit suicide...?

We should help people who want help. We shouldn't force it on them. That's restricting their freedom.

What’s the attempted suicide rate for transgenders? 20, 30... 40% or more.

Does wonders for mental health.

No exaggeration, just dangerous and bad “science” being retracted.

Is this a defense for Joe Biden? Sounds like one.

Someone should really intervene.

Back to the topic... Taylor nailed it.

Rest your head, you worry too much.

I wonder if that suicide rate has anything to do with people treating them like **** in a desperate attempt to feel superior to someone...

Evidently the AJP does not conclude that it does harm. I'll stick with the doctors on this one.
And I'm sure that if someone is willing to pay for it, there will be doctors willing to perform it. However, if there's no medical benifit, then perhaps patients should be footing the bill themselves, just like any other cosmetic procedure.

Thank you to the OP author for bringing this forward. Here is the important link to the actual correction. Psychiatry Online

"...Upon request, the authors reanalyzed the data to compare outcomes between individuals diagnosed with gender incongruence who had received gender-affirming surgical treatments and those diagnosed with gender incongruence who had not. While this comparison was performed retrospectively and was not part of the original research question given that several other factors may differ between the groups, the results demonstrated no advantage of surgery in relation to subsequent mood or anxiety disorder-related health care visits or prescriptions or hospitalizations following suicide attempts in that comparison. Given that the study used neither a prospective cohort design nor a randomized controlled trial design, the conclusion that “the longitudinal association between gender-affirming surgery and lower use of mental health treatment lends support to the decision to provide gender-affirming surgeries to transgender individuals who seek them” is too strong. Finally, although the percentage of individuals with a gender incongruence diagnosis who had received gender-affirming surgical treatments during the follow-up period is correctly reported in Table 3 (37.9%), the text incorrectly refers to this percentage as 48%. The article was reposted on August 1, 2020, correcting this percentage and including an addendum referencing the post publication discussion captured in the Letters to the Editor section of the August 2020 issue of the Journal (1)."

As for me, I just don't know if we know enough to be able to predict with much certainty positive or negative outcomes to re-assignment surgery. In the end, we have to leave this between the psychiatrists who recommend this option to a specific patient, and the patient. But there is enough conflicting information that a 'go slow' approach is warranted when considering this.

We know that this option is not for everyone with gender dysphoria, but that does not mean this option isn't for anyone with gender dysphoria either. What I do know is treating this surgery as a new battleground for a culture war is wrong headed. Its not supposed to be politicized. Clearly it is in this forum, because I have no problem guessing who is on which side of gender affirming surgery before I click on a post and we don't have that many doctors on this forum.

So what did you think the statement,

...the conclusion that “the longitudinal association between gender-affirming surgery and lower use of mental health treatment lends support to the decision to provide gender-affirming surgeries to transgender individuals who seek them” is too strong.

actually means. It has never been in question that gender dysphoria has a high rate of suicide or metal degeneration. It was stupid to ever try and claim that having the surgery would lead to better mental health in the first place.

Did common sense just leave the building?

The word "transition" means a lot of things. Are you referring to medical transition or social transition? Medical transition can start at age 12 with blockers. Hormone replacement therapy can start around 16 years old. Surgery can start around 18 years old. Anything below that would be something our medical and psychology societies do not recommend, as far as I know.

I am pretty sure you're unaware of how the system works. Before you take any medication or get any surgery, you have to get a medical and psychology examination and must live as that gender for at least a year. From there, the doctors and the patient come up with a plan to deal with their gender dysphoria. Your post implies these things are done on a whim. They are not. They are all done through careful analysis. It's not "child abuse" if the transition is helping the patient feel comfortable within their own skin.

The suicide rate is high due to social and economic discrimination. Most studies show that transitioning, whether it be social or medical, helps to improve the lives of transgender individuals.

I agree with the AJP and AMA that bottom surgery is not the highly recommend territory.

Do you think that no one undergoing a psychotic episode when they are at serious risk of harming themselves should be detained? For this to happen the laws of the US and pretty well every other state would need to be changed.

That's a medical condition in which a person doesn't have normal control over their functions.

UPDATE: August 1, 2020

The American Journal of Psychiatry has published an erratum notice after conducting a statistical analysis that was prompted by letters questioning the methodology of “Reduction in Mental Health Treatment Utilization Among Transgender Individuals After Gender-Affirming Surgeries: A Total Population Study.” The erratum explains why the study’s conclusion “that the longitudinal association between gender-affirming surgery and lower use of mental health treatment lends support to the decision to provide gender-affirming surgeries to transgender individuals who seek them” is too strong.

For details, read the erratum, author’s response, and the study with a post publication addendum.

Washington – For transgender individuals, gender-affirming surgery can lead to long-term mental health benefits, according to new research published online today in The American Journal of Psychiatry. The study found that among transgender individuals with gender incongruence, undergoing gender-affirming surgery was significantly associated with a decrease in mental health treatment over time.

Researchers Richard Branstrom, Ph.D., and John E. Pachankis, Ph.D., with the Yale School of Public Health, New Haven, Connecticut, used the Swedish Total Population Register to identify more than 2.500 individuals who received a diagnosis of gender incongruence (i.e., transsexualism or gender identity disorder) between 2005 and 2015. Among individuals with gender incongruence, just more than 70% had received hormone treatment and nearly half (48%) had undergone gender-affirming surgical treatment during the 10-year follow-up period. Nearly all (97%) of those who had undergone surgery also received hormone treatment. Less than one-third had received neither treatment.

They analyzed mental health treatment in 2015 in relation to the length of time since gender-affirming hormone and surgical treatment, including distinguishing the potentially interrelated effects of the two treatments. The mental health measures included health care visits for mood and anxiety disorder, antidepressant and anti-anxiety prescriptions, and hospitalization after a suicide attempt.

Increased time since last gender-affirming surgery was associated with reduced likelihood of use of mental health treatment. The study found the odds of receiving mental health treatment were reduced by 8% for every year since receiving gender-affirming surgery over the 10-year follow-up period. They did not find the same association for hormone treatment.

So, though your attempt to push mental illness on others is noted and incorrect, you do realize you just admitted the retraction by the American Journal of Psychiatry was correct.

Well done.

You’re lying to yourself.

Here... the retraction, right from the source: Psychiatry Online

Also by the authors in the retraction: “individuals diagnosed with gender incongruence who had received gender-affirming surgery were more likely to be treated for anxiety disorders compared with individuals diagnosed with gender incongruence who had not received gender-affirming surgery.”

So, their mental conditions worsened, after mutilating themselves.

Bon apetit!!!
