What's lead to the far left's cancel culture becoming the monster that it is today, started during President Obama's time in office. That was when democrats and mainstream leftists went all in on the identity politics strategy, and made the choice to label anyone who opposed Obama's policies or actions as being "racist". But that was only the beginning...
Then seemingly out of nowhere the normal protests to conservative speakers on college campuses by the far left, morphed into blatant attempts to silence them all together. They did everything in their power to prevent conservatives and anyone who voiced any opinion the left disagreed with from speaking. People like Ben Shapiro, Jason Riley, Ann Coulter, and Milo, just to name a few. From there they began targeting conservative voices on radio and TV. Since they didn't have the power to use violence and threats to prevent them from expressing their political views on air, they instead threatened the networks they worked for and the companies who sponsored their shows. In Tucker Carlson's case, a leftist mob showed up at his house and terrorized his wife and family while he was doing his show. It didn't stop there either. Since the election of Donald Trump, we've seen his supporters, political conservatives, republican politicians, and members of the Trump administration publicly assaulted and harassed by leftist mobs for absolutely no reason at all.
Since the death of George Floyd cancel culture has gone into high gear. With the support of democratic governors and mayors the left has gone on a rampage destroying anything and everything in their paths, and now anyone, regardless of ideology, who expresses anything publicly or privately, that does not conform to the far left ideology or in any way opposed the actions of BLM or ANTIFA, can quickly become a target and have their entire lives ruined in the blink of an eye.
The reason things have escalated so dramatically is because the far left understands exactly what the greatest threat to their ideology is, and are now doing everything in their power snuff that enemy out. That threat is the truth. That is what they have been fighting so hard against. In the past it used to be a battle of ideas, and they respected the free expression of those ideas. But in recent years those ideas haven't garnished the political following they had hoped for, so they adopted identity politics as their primary political strategy. The only way identity politics can succeed is if political ideas are taken off the table, and the truth is suppressed, which explains cancel culture and it's rapid escalation.
If you watch any of the hundreds of WalkAway testimonials where former progressives, SJW's and democratic voters explain why they decided to walk away from the left, there is a recurring theme that seems to be present in nearly all of them. They all discovered through listening to opposing views and taking the time to research what is true for themselves, that most of the things they believed about republicans/conservatives they had been told all their lives by the media, democrats, celebrities, teachers and far left activists, were nothing but a bunch of lies. Once they discovered the truth and saw the destructiveness of identity politics, it completely changed their lives and left them with no choice but to abandon the left. Many of them still hold liberal beliefs and disagree with conservatives on various issues, but at least they know where they stand, are accepted for who they are, and are no longer being lied to.
