For those that want a raise in the minimum wage

We have people whining about the minimum wage. They claim you can live on a minimum wage. Here is a little new for those people. The minimum wage was never designed to be a life time job. It is basically for teens as their first job, and maybe for older people to add to their income.

Here is a suggestion. Dont like the pay of a minimum wage job, better yourself and get a higher paying job!!! Do you think that putting a pickle on an hamburger should pay $15 and more????

Actually, minimum wages came about due to the prevalence of sweat shops that paid below subsistance wages. If you learn your history, you will stop saying such stupid ****.

1990 called, and wants its job market back.

The "minimum wage is for teens!" thing ended a long, long time ago. It's completely irrelevant to today's economy.

Minimum wage hikes, by the way, don't just help those at the rock bottom of the scale. It increases wages for millions who are just above the minimum.

I might add, y'all have been squealing about $15/hour for so many years, that $15/hour is actually quite reasonable now.

What is wrong with you?

There are 5 million job openings... and 30 million unemployed people looking for work.

Even in a better job market, people stuck in minimum wage jobs often can't even afford the time to land a better job. This is because a lot of low-wage employers deliberately assign employees to chaotic part-time schedules, which make it difficult (if not impossible) to get employment or arrange child care. (Not to mention that child care in the US is immorally expensive and unavailable.)

Your priorities are so incredibly out of whack, it is just stunning.

Yes.

That goes double if they are an essential worker who must work during a pandemic. I definitely hope the people bagging my groceries, who are risking their health and that of their family, are compensated well.

Minimum wage was created in 1938.Most people back then did not graduate college,heck most people back then didn't even graduate high school.Most women back then got married and did not have a wage paying job,their job was raising kids and taking care of the household while the husband worked. So the idea that minimum wage was created as some sort of training wage for teens or a something a little extra for old folks to earn is ****ing absurd.

I was having a conversation with a Democrat recently, and we were talking about our lives and careers. I told her that my first full-time job only paid minimum wage ($4/hr back then), so I decided to change my career to something that paid better.

Her only comment was -- how terrible that minimum wage isn't enough to live on.

So ... if we aren't making enough money, the problem isn't us. No, we don't need to change at all, or improve our job skills. Just get the loving government to fix our lives.

That is exactly how Democrats think.

You right wingers think that a wage is STRICTLY between an employer, and employee. Thus, they think that folks should be able to sell themselves into LITERAL SLAVERY, if they choose. I have heard that argument MANY times from libertarian/right wingers.

Its really pretty simple. A business has jobs and money, people need the jobs and money. It has worked well for more than 200 years.

But then you have to be willing to work. That is a real hang up for some liberals.

It isn't that simple. Children without parents, or relatives, to take care of them must be taken care of by the government. Disabled people can't take care of themselves, if unable to work. We can't assume they have friends or relatives who can support them. Old people get Social Security -- even though we did pay into it, the assumption is that many old people would not be able to save enough, and would starve.

Also, single women with children have a very hard time because child care is expensive.

People who are healthy and not taking care of children don't have an excuse. But how can the government really determine who can or can't work?

Government help should be as local as possible. Conservatives have no problem with social programs at the state and local levels. A more local government is better able to oversee the programs.

This is untrue. President Roosevelt, who instituted the minimum wage said "It seems to me to be equally plain that no business which depends for existence on paying less than living wages to its workers has any right to continue in this country."

And raising the minimum wage tends to have a ripple affect and raise wages further up the the, so it even benefits those with higher paying jobs.

Bettering yourself in America is free right? We have free college and free trade schools, and we have free healthcare for people who aren't working, right?
