These were not 'troops'.
This has to, or it should, wake people up as to what Trump's motives are by his action of sending DHS in to interfere in the Portland protests. There's no more solid or devoted American alive than General Barry McCaffrey. I will post General McCaffrey's dialog from an interview on Brian Williams on MSNBC last night. If people aren't afraid that our democracy is being eroded by Trump now, they never will be and will continue to defend this misuse of the Dept of Homeland Security. This is a moment that's absolutely pivotal.
General Barry McCaffrey's statement:
"The State of Oregon has 6700 law enforcement officers and 8000 National Guard, so they've got adequate manpower and resources to deal with these problems. Our Constitution essentially has the overwhelming majority of criminal law enforcement at state, county and municipal level, and the assets are there to do that.
What we're seeing is that Mr. Trump has taken the Department of Homeland Security and with it's fifth director (Chad Wolf), and has created a national police. They're turning it into a ministry of the interior. They're deploying people in camouflaged uniforms in big numbers and it's not just to protect federal property.
The Department of Homeland Security is 240,000 people, it's a gigantic agency which was formed primarily for natural disasters and anti-terrorism, not to conduct any criminal operations in the streets of American cities. This is an outrage.
I have cringed every time I've heard the word 'troops' applied to this group. What we have is a disparate collection of federal law enforcement officers. I don't believe they're adequately trained as a group to conduct protective measures on federal property never mind anti-riot duties. When we're advising foreign governments we tell them, 'do not create an internal police force that either looks like secret police, violates the rights of its citizens, or looks like an army.' There's just absolutely no reason to have these very intimidating, Marshall presence on the streets never-mind one that doesn't appear to be responsive to the governor, the mayor and the local police force. This is starting to act like a national police force. This is not the way America works.Congress has got to get a hold on this."
