Yes, I believe that we are entrusting police officers with too many responsibilities. I believe it isn't fair to the public, and it isn't fair to the police officers, themselves. They are not therapists, psychologists, social workers or marriage councilors. Yet, these are the folks that are called when people need the services of trained professionals. The police just aren't equipped to handle a lot of situations...so no, we don't need more paramilitary gear or armored troop carriers for local police forces...we need specialized workers that can handle situations dealing with suicide, domestic disputes, etc.
That doesn't mean getting rid of all cops. That means defunding them and putting the funds towards people able to handle problems the police simply aren't able to handle.
