Goya Foods CEO Robert Unanue calls boycott threats following his praise of Trump a 'suppression of speech' | businessinsider.com

Goya Foods CEO called boycott threats a "suppression of speech," after facing backlash for his praise for President Trump.

On Thursday, CEO Robert Unanue said the US is "truly blessed" to have President Trump as a leader at a White House event. Unanue's statements quickly sparked backlash on social media, including comments from high-profile Trump critics such as Rep. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez and Hamilton creator and star Lin-Manuel Miranda.

Unanue said that boycott threats are a "suppression of speech," mentioning Goya's past efforts with President Barack Obama and First Lady Michelle Obama.

"You're allowed to ... praise one president, but you're not allowed" to praise another, Unanue said.

"I'm not apologizing," he added, saying that there was a double standard.

It's becoming ridiculous. The left are attempting to stifle thought, opinion, and speech.

This has to stop.

So you hate the free market and you're maybe having hallucinations where you see "the left" everywhere?

How DARE citizens exercise their right to free speech about the speech of other citizens!

How DARE citizens vote with their wallets!

Right wingers are entitled to say whatever they want free of consequence!

JAIL EVERYONE WHO REFUSES TO BUY GOYA'S PRODUCTS! JAIL EVERYONE WHO CRITICIZED ITS CEO!

It'd be nice if at least one of you Trumpists understood the right you pretend to whine about.

They are, and it does. It seems a lot of Americans who live in big cities have decided they no longer care to share the country with the vast, agricultural regions that feed them, build their structures, and man their defenses. You know, the common causes of the nation? But cancel them, you know, because they support the president and hold moral values outside the ever-shifting whims of liberal orthodoxy.

Your collective temper tantrum is tiring, but sadly it weakens us all. Today's liberals, mired in miseries real and imaged, just want to drag everyone else into the pit with them.

When did he praise Obama? Please provide a link. He was a guest at an event featuring Michelle Obama's garden. He did not claim that we were "truly blessed" to have the Obamas in the White House, and the other pandering statements this Trump donor made recently. He should learn about branding from his hero, and not brand his product Trump Beans which will likely be unpopular with consumers.

Robert Unanue chose to speak up and some have chosen to react. No one's speech has been suppressed.

Try Hanover organic low sodium instead.

What a dumbass performance the head of Goya put on on the WH lawn. After all the pronouncements out of this Administration, disparaging brown people, why would you suck up to Trump like this? Might help if the head of the company knew who bought his product; ought to be fired for a piss poor business decision......

J.K. Rowling, Noam Chomsky among dozens to call for end to ‘cancel culture’ | nypost.com

More than 100 writers and scholars — including Noam Chomsky, J.K. Rowling and Malcolm Gladwell — have signed a public letter decrying cancel culture and the rising “intolerance of opposing views.”

Published in Harper’s Magazine on Tuesday, the letter argued that the recent “needed reckoning” on racial and social justice has also “intensified a new set of moral attitudes and political commitments” that tend to stifle the norms of public debate and tolerating differences.

“The free exchange of information and ideas, the lifeblood of a liberal society, is daily becoming more constricted,” the letter states.

It warns that censorship, while something “we have come to expect this on the radical right,” is also spreading more widely on the left through “an intolerance of opposing views, a vogue for public shaming and ostracism, and the tendency to dissolve complex policy issues in a blinding moral certainty.”

“The democratic inclusion we want can be achieved only if we speak out against the intolerant climate that has set in on all sides.”

Immaturity, petulance, and drama is all I've ever seen from this poster.

Never an argument from a position of strength or facts; just lashing out mostly.

I suspect you're brighter than this, Mr. Person. I encourage you to at least make an attempt to debate.

Uh, this is actually free speech in action. What this dumbass CEO thinks is free speech is since he's a big shot CEO and normally has an entire company kissing his dumb ass all day that when he's subject to criticism it's NOT FAIR!!! Speech has consequences, even for privileged CEO types.

If he wants to sell beans he needs to stop making ridiculous statements. There, fixed it.

Sell beans?
How many millions in food have you donated lately?
How many people do you employ and pay so they can support themselves and their families?
And he doesn't "NEED" to do ****.

This is in fact the CEO's position: "How DARE citizens exercise their right to free speech about the speech of other citizens!" Those criticizing the CEO and calling for a boycott are exercising their right to free speech. Nothing more. If you want to buy extra Goya beans, you can, and others can shop other brands, because that's how the MARKET works. Sometimes right wingers get it. Here's Ted Cruz on alternative days on the same issue:

FWIW, was there anything more predictable than Ted Cruz turning into what we all see now is a cowardly, small asshole of a man with no discernible principles at all?
