White privilege (or white skin privilege) is the societal privilege that benefits white people over non-white people in some societies, particularly if they are otherwise under the same social, political, or economic circumstances. With roots in European colonialism,[1] the Atlantic slave trade, and the growth of the Second British Empire after 1783, white privilege has developed[2] in circumstances that have broadly sought to protect white racial privileges,[3] various national citizenships and other rights or special benefits.[4][5]

In the study of white privilege, and its broader field of whiteness studies, academic perspectives such as critical race theory use the concept to analyze how racism and racialized societies affect the lives of white or white-skinned people. For example, Peggy McIntosh describes the advantages that whites in Western societies enjoy and non-whites do not experience, as "an invisible package of unearned assets".[6] White privilege denotes both obvious and less obvious passive advantages that white people may not recognize they have, which distinguishes it from overt bias or prejudice. These include cultural affirmations of one's own worth; presumed greater social status; and freedom to move, buy, work, play, and speak freely. The effects can be seen in professional, educational, and personal contexts. The concept of white privilege also implies the right to assume the universality of one's own experiences, marking others as different or exceptional while perceiving oneself as normal.[7][8]

So how many of our posters suffer from this devastating and debilitating issue? Do you feel the angst? The guilt? Are you fighting for the rights of the non-privileged?

I may have your answers.....

I don't think anyone should feel guilt for something their ancestors did if they have changed their attitude towards these issues. We can't erase history.

This is not as easy a question as you make it out to be. Privilege can depend on a lot more than skin color. Further, in America, I would say that some are afflicted with being underprivileged and the point is to bring them up the privilege ladder not to lower anyone else or lower the general standards that made America the envy of the world. And if America has slipped in that latter regard the blame lies, if you will, with the less underprivileged.

I think that incidious, pervasive, structural racism can act in ways you dont think about. I think that you cannot likely fathom being truly a lower caste. It should shame you Republicans, that Trump started off slanderring Obama in the most crass ludicrous fashion, hating the Mexicans, then he hated I damnn, I forget all those he hates. He winds up hating almost everyone. No wonder his supporters got the message, hate away.

I don't suffer anything you've mentioned, I only acknowledge that I have it.

great.....we have a winner here

let me help you...and all the white liberal/progressives who suffer the same fate

you say you have white privilege....

so lets get rid of it for you...all of it

tomorrow i want you to quit your job, and have your boss offer it to a person of color whether they have the necessary skills or not. Your car....i want you to donate it to the nearest shelter... but is has to cater to black families. Any money in banks, markets, investments....same thing...they need to be cashed in and sent to charities for black causes.

Then i want you to give your house and personal belongings away....thats it....give it ALL AWAY....take all that guilt and give it to someone else. By the end of tomorrow, you should be homeless and broke....and you can assuage your guilt. And then you can find other liberals/progressives who suffer the same guilt ridden fate, and help them do the same. I am sure you have a bunch of friends you can help find their way also.....

I figure it will take a week, maybe two...and all that guilt will magically disappear....you can earn it back (remember you are white, and have the privilege)

You can thank me later.....

That's a stupid idea since I'm a retired nurse and incidentally, I worked with other doctors and nurses from all over the world of every color and creed on the planet, and I enjoyed every moment.

But I want YOU to do something. Buy your 15 year old a gray hoodie sweatshirt and send him to the store for you oh....around 11:00 at night, you know, when it's good and dark and people can't tell what his skin color is, in an upper middle class neighborhood in Florida. Get back to me how that works out for you.

It's wonderful having white privilege. I got into college entirely because of white affirmative action -- the college was required to accept a certain percentage of white students. And our whiteness was factored in with our grades and test scores.

Then, after graduating, I got my first job because of white affirmative action. Other people with the same qualifications but different skin color were competing for the same job. But because of diversity requirements, I was hired because my whiteness would make the company more diverse.

White privilege has been amazing. I never had to worry about money, I never had to worry about anything. I have to admit I sometimes feel a little guilty because of how easy my life has always been. And it was ALL because of my whiteness.

I always make sure to wear plenty of sun screen because I am terrified of losing my whiteness! People are always respectful and kind when they see my white skin. Even when driving in rush hour traffic, I don't get cursed at, as long as the other drivers can see that I am white.

And it doesn't even matter that I am Jewish and therefore not exactly white. My skin isn't actually white, to tell the truth, but it's far enough from black that I have the constant luxury of whiteness.

The only time I ever have any trouble is on the phone, when the other person doesn't know me and can't see my whiteness. If they start acting racist, assuming wrongly that I am a person of non-whiteness, I always yell into the phone "I AM WHITE I AM WHITE YOU DUMMY. BE NICE TO ME I AM SPECIAL BECAUSE I AM WHITE."

And that usually works.

I can't really explain in a brief comment all the wonders of being white. It truthfully never ends, from morning to night, the glories of my white skin.

Yes I feel a little guilty now and then, but then I think **** 'em ain't my fault they were born the wrong race!

you are the one that is saying it...not me

and you can get more of your buddies to act the same.....

Interestingly enough, literally the only people who bring up "guilt" are the people who reject the concept of white privilege.

There may be guilt going on here, but it ain't mine.

I never claimed to have any guilt. Now you're just desperate and making **** up that I never said. No, I have no guilt that I have white privilege, what I said is that I acknowledge that I have white privilege, and so do you, whether or not you acknowledge it.

So, I think the term is backwards logically, and poor politics besides.

When I hear friends, church members, or acquaintances describe what they mean by "white privilege", if often sounds like "I've been pulled over for driving while black" or "my father was once beaten up by racist cops" or "I get followed sometimes when I walk into stores by suspicious clerks" or "I couldn't get a loan when I needed one", etc. so on and so forth. These, however, are not descriptions of white privilege in action - they are descriptions of disadvantages uniquely faced by african americans in our society. There seems to be more than enough evidence out there to establish the general applicability of their individual experiences, and, so, that's a fair point for them to bring up to be addressed.

If it is actually coming from the argument that african americans face unique disadvantages and hurdles in our society, then the term white privilege is both inaccurate and bad politics - it alienates a swathe of the group you need to win over by coming off as dishonest and accusatory (if you don't think "white privilege" comes off as accusatory, consider your emotional reaction to a white guy giving a variation of the "the real problem is black crime" argument, especially one that attempted to explicitly tie blackness to crime).

This movement would be better-advised to alter their language to one focusing in on remaining unique disadvantages or hurdles faced by african americans in our society. They would win more sympathetic ears, and be better focused on actually altering conditions to make people's lives better.

Blacks are not helpless babies. Whites don't have to figure out how to make blacks more successful. It isn't the "white man's burden" to help blacks. Just get out of their way and let them figure it out.

Whites have been trying to help blacks for a long time now and all it does is hold them back. Why do you assume you are smarter than blacks and they need you to solve their problems? Maybe YOU are the racists.

I do not know how you think Black Americans are going to help themselves when the system prevents them from doing so on a wide scale. There are exceptions, but it boils down to a more complicated set of oppressive elements than your oversimplification implies. And it is not due to one party or the other, as many would have us believe. The issue is bipartisan, and it would be nice if we could see our government officials start treating it as such to find solutions together instead of in spite of each other.

Can you define how white privilege has helped you. Not sure if you went to college,if you did how was your skin color helpful? If you are a business owner were you helped by mandated set asides for white folk? If you went to work for a company did your skin color help the company meet diversity goals? Just wondering.

Who do we believe, there are examples of BLACK PEOPLE denouncing white privilege, saying there is no such thing. You have some that swear there is....

I posted a video of a discussion about this, where the gentleman suggests there is no white privilege, that the black community has to do better,

Found it again, here it is - Joshua Feuerstein - OHHHHH! He destroys her! | Facebook

Can anyone here provide an argument against him, because the lady got completely lost....

so you're a hypocrite then

you will fight for a cause, but only to a point....right?

any of the white liberal/progressives willing to GIVE UP everything and give it to the black community?

if in school, give up your slot? if in a job, give that up? give up your home and possessions that were seemingly gotten unfairly?

if not, then i can forget about this cause, cant i....if you arent willing to give up your status and stuff for the fight, why should i care AT ALL

The concept of white privilege also implies the right to assume the universality of one's own experiences, marking others as different or exceptional while perceiving oneself as normal.[7][8]

meaning you are bias against someone without even knowing you are bias against someone and bias against someone without even thinking it.
