Is Cancel Culture Real?

I bet that isn't true.

It is. It's called being libertarian. I am 100% in favor of social enforcement of good manners. I am 100% opposed to legal enforcement of good manners.

Yes. There is a small but nevertheless very active and vocal subsection of the political left-wing, especially among the younger generation, which seeks to silence political opposition by either (1) bullying them off of social media platforms or claiming people who they disagree with politically are creating a dangerous environment so that they are kicked off social media platforms, or (2) going after people's livelihoods. They do this by either astro-turfing advertisers or simply raising a stink around a particular person's employer so that the employer is pressured to fire the offensive person in question. I think that is disgusting, and I think the people who resort to such tactics should have their own medicine served upon them.

I have a better idea. Companies and organizations, grow a pair of balls or tits as the case may be and tell those who seek to impose their will upon these entities, to piss up a rope. Colleges and universities seem to be pumping out minnows not men, people are becoming increasingly, these days gutless spineless fools.

Boycotting is not the same thing as protesting. Why did you go to protesting and rioting when we were discussing boycotting?

And when did I say something about "hate"? Strawman for fun?

Boycott's are not a form of protesting?

Because you seem to have some extreme, negative, emotional reactions to notions that you disagree with, like calling the right pathetic.

If you're going to make up your own conversation, do us all a favor and just yell at yourself in the shower.

I was following your lead. ;)

Who decides what's incendiary? The mob?

in most cases it's pretty obvious what is incendiary. If you can't figure it out it's probably because you agree with the person.

Our rights aren't decided by the mob. We tried that with Jim Crow. Remember?

What rights? Your right to not be fired? Where's that in the constitution?

Not playing volleyball in gym class is a form of protest. Does it lead to rioting?

The right is pathetic. What does that have to do with anything?

I HAD NEVER HEARD OF ‘cancel culture”, until I heard a Fox News model refer to it.

No, it's a real thing and it's not a new thing either.
But that isn't why Fox News posted it.
Anyway, the open letter, which can be accessed from Harper's Magazine, makes some sound points.
Cancel Culture is just another form of overreaction which is quite natural and temporary, until cooler heads catch up and get a handle on issues.

It's like a wildfire, in that it burns up old brush. But it becomes too excessive and it takes benign persons and things with it.
But most importantly, it feeds a kind of organic "inner fascism" that connects to emotions rather than logic and tolerance, and in the process it begins to stifle real and rational ideas because it enforces an artificial conformity.

Cancel Culture diddles left wing amygdalas the same way real actual fascism diddles right wing amygdalas.

One thing you may want to think about is why this is happening. A lot of groups have been putting up with a lot of **** from the prevailing US subculture for decades or in some cases centuries. Now with demographics (and therefore the balance of power) shifting, they don't have to. There are generations of frustration built up for things never addressed.

I would rather it be a social revolution than a physical one (which, historically, can be quite nasty)

I believe this is somewhat true because political leaders act like they're listening to our complaints, with pandering speeches, but then keep everything status quo because of the financial impacts of change. Eventually, society revolts.

It's unfortunately real, and they are even going after D&D because a fictitious race (Drow or dark elves) are "promoting negative stereotypes".

A fictitious race that's been part of D&D for decades, and now all of the sudden it's racist.

There were several D&D races that literally had "the light skinned ones are good and the dark skinned ones are evil" as integral game mechanics. What do you mean that's "suddenly" racist?

I guess nobody knows where to ...drow.... the line

And here is the thing: I do not know how true that is.

Speaking anecdotally, of this desire to see people be "cancelled" seems to be driven by young lily-white activists saying that they are acting on behalf of oppressed minorities, and not very many people actually belonging to oppressed minorities. The same goes for people tearing down statues of non-Confederate slave owners. I see precious few black activists and mainly young college-age white kids.

This reminds me quite a bit of Communist activists (especially in Russia), who claimed to be fighting on behalf of the oppressed workers and toilers, but who had hardly any working class people among their ranks.

That is what I see as happening. As demographics change, society is trying to figure out its new consensus and therefore come up with a new popular culture. When these things happens, the people who go over the top always jump in first and we see that from both sides with the racist president versus the tumblerites

That literally goes against Libertarianism.

Now you're proposing false analogies to make a point. Any form of protest can lead to more extreme reactions.

Generalizing that a whole party, every individual of it, is pathetic sounds like hate?

That is how culture works. The dominant culture always determines what are good manners.

Telling those who voted for Trump that they're racist cultists is not good manners so I reject your theory that the dominate or the majority holds the cards.

What about the green skinned monsters...

I bet none of the CC idiots even play D&D.

An SJW by any other name...

How pathetic the right has become.

The themes don’t change.

Every once in a while, there’s a new code phrase. Five minutes of Fox commentary makes it clear that it’s the same sauce.

It's absolutely real and this is the Left's agenda in action. Submission isn't optional.

It is definitely real and believe it or not, spread to to England as a mighty infection hits America. The Communist thought. It arrived people.

The National Anthem is inflammatory?

:lamo

It does not remotely go against liberarianism for the people to make their own choices.

According to this, it seems to roughly follow broader demographics: Recent protesters are more diverse, younger than Americans overall | Pew Research Center

I am not sure it is a revolution, like we saw in Russia so much as a conglomeration of a lot of people with a lot of individual grievances who are attaching themselves to the primary narrative (BLM). In other words, when you have a big scary enemy to fight, then these kinds of groups will come together, at least until the primary opponent group is beaten and then they will split into their own warring factions.

BLM gets a lot of press, but we are seeing anarchists, looters, and other fringe groups mixed in. Also we are seeing who want more favorable legislation for their pet cause (LBGT, pro-choice, higher minimum wage, less wealth stratification, or other mainstream causes). It can be hard to pick out who is there for what exactly through visual analysis.

Libertarianism doesn't condone mob rule.

Did they have white-skinned variants that were inherently good?
