US Incarceration Rates

I don't worry about my wife and daughter being in a room with some guy who conns people out of millions of dollars.

I do worry about my wife and daughter being in a room with a guy who steals 1,000 dollars from a convenience store with a gun.

Jail has many different uses

To deter people from committing crimes. If someone can steal millions of dollars and never spend a day in prison, it makes it very tempting for it. Throw them in real jail, to deter them from stealing my retirement funds

If I didn't know better, I would have credited you with making some very good use of sarcasm. Unfortunately, I suspect you are dead serious.

I've opposed incarceration for non violent white collar criminals for years. And it annoys me immensely when people get so worked up over a criminal who at worst steals money yet are more tolerant of violent criminals.

I also get annoyed every time there is a major swindle and you see some old couple (often) on tv crying and wailing "He stole our entire life savings!!".

I want to yell, "Why the hell did you risk your entire life savings??!!" Or even half your life sayings?

The answer of course is those victims of a swindle were greedy. It wasn't enough that they saved for 40 years to put away 200,000 dollars. No, they just had to gamble their money because they wanted 400,000 or 500,000.

Tough.

Don't want the time, don't do the crime.

Problem in this country is there are cultures which embrace crime as a way of life and some which do not.

Easy peasy

Embarrassing, to put it in a nutshell.

And, the worst states are usually the former Confederate ones. Besides OK and LA, we have MS, AL, GA, Arkansas and Texas. Arizona, not exactly one of your more progressive states follows--odds are they and OK would have been slave states, if they were states back then.

We have more prisoners per capita than Cuba!

So, next time someone tells you about Freedom, give them the "yeah, but..." on that.

Let’s just release them so more crime can be committed.
You should petition they be released into your neighborhood. I’m sure you wouldn’t have a problem with that.
Hopefully you haven’t defunded your police department.

Maybe instead of cracking wise you could wonder why we have the highest per capita incarceration rate on the planet. I argue that it's not the people; it's the system.

You're right. I'm glad we can agree that people like Madoff, twump and Milken should be publiced hanged.

Good talk!

Hmmmmm. That is walking a veerrrrrrrrrrrrrry fine line. You must like the idea of visits from Federal agents.

Really? It's the system forcing people to commit crimes?

So...."the system" is making some thug asswipe massacre people BBQing in the south side of Chicago?

If people commit crimes the should be in prison.

Unless they are nonviolent white collar criminals.

Breonna Taylor was ****ing sleeping.
