While this virus exists without a vaccine, to reopen schools without changes will certainly endanger not only the students, but their parents. So for at least six months and up to a year we have to make changes. To me the easiest way would be to change to what Cuba had before their revolution. One of my professors who taught Spanish from the University I attended immigrated from Cuba after Castro took over. He said that in Cuba you went to school early or late. The early classes went from six in the morning until noon and the late classes went from half past noon until half past six. You got a full education no matter if you choose early or late classes. If we went to this system until such time as we got a vaccine, we could socially distance and with masks education could be made safe for both the students and their parents when they went home. Now it would be more expensive, but it would be only until we had a vaccine.

Children are not at risk from the coronavirus.

I'm not particularly fond of socialist education, but whatever schools should do in the absence of this particular virus is what they should do now.

the baby boomers have spent the last decade doing nothing but insulting the millenials. so why would the young give a **** about them. why dont they use all their riches they've been hoarding to isolate themselves if they want to live. the young don't need to isolate. and with the way society has treated them they don't care to either

Children face risk for severe complications and death from COVID-19: Most of the children admitted to pediatric intensive care units had underlying conditions -- ScienceDaily

Apparently you have not been watching something other than Faux News. Children are at risk. They have found that this virus can harm and kill children at a much higher rate than originally thought, but you will not hear that on Faux News. read the article above.

If you have been watching TV you would know that younger and younger people are not only getting covid, but dying from it. Many who live through the disease have permanent lung, heart, neurological and physical damage that will last them a life time. SO you may be ignorant enough to believe that the young are not at risk, but you need to read more and watch less Faux News.

In my neck of the woods, students are being given a choice of attending school physically (with many changes) or committing to a completely virtual classroom on a semester by semester basis. Thus far, it's about 60/40 with the deadline for committing to virtual still a couple of weeks away.

So, accomplishes the same thing, but in a different way.

To date, 29 children under the age of fifteen have died with the coronavirus in the US. Whether the virus was actually causative for them is unknown.

death rate is very low for young healthy people

their immune system is so fast that the virus has no time to do damage

SOunds good. Need to insure that the kids can keep a good distance apart and they must wear masks, and the schools should be prepared to provide them.

I guess you certainly know more than the experts who say they are at risk. And I would like a link for both the number of deaths and the fact that their immune systems react too fast for them to get sick.

Masks will be provided to faculty and staff, who are required to wear them.

As is the case in many states it seems, students are only "strongly encouraged" to wear masks. That's not been too popular with teachers.

You have kids, staff, and family to think about...

I would predict that regardless of what the year starts as, the first positive test will result in a school shutdown. A school quarantine for 2-4 weeks.

I hope that is part of the plan. Not every young healthy child or staff member lives with other young healthy family. I assume this year will require more flexibility than any other. I pray for all parents of young children. This will be challenging.

Several states have already announced they will be opening their schools this Fall along with universities and colleges. Good luck with having elementary students keeping their masks on. Each state will have their own set of rules in re-opening. This isn't Cuba. If there are elderly teachers I can see them holding class remotely with an assistant to take care of things in the classroom. If you do not feel good about sending your kid to school, you can make arrangements to have them continue to learn from home.

Personally, my opinion is if you are vulnerable take every precaution to protect yourself. Other than that, people need to get on with their lives.

There has not been enough written how hard this shutdown has been on kids. Psychologists and other experts are calling for the schools to be re-open.

The young adults among us are responsible for the new spikes of this virus after the rest of us sacrificed dearly to tamp down the spread from happening. Forking selfish bunch of ignoramuses

People are so done with the restrictions. They want normalcy back in their lives. You yahoos who condoned all the many of millions who protested through this pandemic should be the last one to open your mouth and condemn others wanting to open up their businesses and schools.

In the next couple of weeks if the death rates continue to hold to low rates as they are now. The people will be demanding this country stop this artificial shutdown and will be defying their mayors and governors that do not see it as they do.

That's not been too popular with teachers.

Children have always been viral incubators and have never been required to wear masks in school before.

This language could be used to describe anything. President Obama may have been born in Kenya. Bush may have done 9/11. The Holocaust may have been faked. Literally any statement contrary to fact can be described as a possibility.

the fact that their immune systems react too fast for them to get sick.

they still get sick

if the immune system is fast enough then the virus has no time to get into the lungs or do any permanent damage. so the experience is very mild.

And even with just the mundane cold going around, disinfectant wipes and hand sanitizer have become as much a staple in school supplies as crayons and notebook paper.

Taylor shortly after school opens the flu cases begin every year. We do not close down schools over the flu. We only close down schools who are experiencing massive number of cases. And that particular school could shut down for about 7 days and the entire school is disinfected. From everything I have read the yearly flu kills far more kids than COVID has every year.

It sounds like our schools will be closing for a minimum of 3 days if someone in the school gets covid, or if multiple people in nearby schools get covid. Thats a big change from last spring when they shut down every school in the county after the first case.

Parents around here are mostly worried about whether their kids will receive a proper education. The remote schooling last spring didn't involve any real teaching, mostly review and watching videos and perfoming self-guided exercises. Part of the focus this fall is to "streamline" the curriculum to play catch-up from last year.

I would be interested to see the number of kids killed by the flu each year.

Regardless, COVID is dangerous to family members and school staff/their families.

Kids typically are not consistent regarding important behaviors like hand washing. This makes opening a school, especially k-8, more complicated than other businesses.

The other trick is helping families navigate this. If schools open great. However, a positive COVID test can shutdown a school for a short period.

Here is the question, how do families navigate an inconsistent and unpredictable schedule? I am guessing that adds stress to families and administrators making those decisions as we head towards fall.

Nothing about this will be easy or convenient.

At some point when did people get the idea that the world was a safe space?

No, we cannot open schools. We must inflict the maximum possible damage on the country until after Joe Biden is elected. Then everything can open back up immediately, as if nothing had ever happened.

On a side note, there has NEVER been a vaccine created for a coronavirus. EVER.
