Trump Uses Mount Rushmore Speech to Deliver Divisive Culture War Message

Down in the polls and failing to control a raging pandemic, the president cast himself as waging battle against a “new far-left fascism” that imperils American values and seeks to erase history.
...
With the coronavirus pandemic raging and his campaign faltering in the polls, his appearance amounted to a fiery reboot of his re-election effort, using the holiday and an official presidential address to mount a full-on culture war against a straw-man version of the left that he portrayed as inciting mayhem and moving the country toward totalitarianism.

Our nation is witnessing a merciless campaign to wipe out our history, defame our heroes, erase our values and indoctrinate our children,” Mr. Trump said, addressing a packed crowd of sign-waving supporters, few of whom wore masks. “Angry mobs are trying to tear down statues of our founders, deface our most sacred memorials and unleash a wave of violent crime in our cities.

Lawyers are taught that when the law is on your side, pound the law; and when the facts are on your side, pound the facts -- and when neither the facts or law are on your side, pound the table. Trump's Mt. Rushmore speech is the equivalent of pounding the table, as his governance, such as it is, leaves America far worse and weaker than it was when he took over. That's why he needed to invent a straw-man enemy -- "far-left fascism," tearing down statutes of our founders {Confederate generals are our founders?}

An example of totalitarianism is HIS actions to use the wheels of government to punish his enemies, like those who testified before the Impeachment Hearings, and reward friends by allowing them to go free after committing high crimes.

The idea that Joe Biden is somehow a radical leftist is as silly as it sounds.

Trump keeps doubling-down in the wrong direction while blaming others for the results of His own action for which He claims no responsibility. That is his pathology. He can only get worse. And Trump will get worse and make things worse. Stay tuned.

Can't argue with that. Yet, here we are.

I turned on FOX last night curious to see the speech but the introductions were on and a panel of four, presumably informed, commentators was talking things over. The nearby protest by a tribe of Native Americans came up and was uniformly deplored as unfitting. Not one of the panel members mentioned that the land at Mount Rushmore was stolen, taken from the tribe in violation of a binding treaty, or that the Supreme Court not long ago confirmed the unlawful seizure and ordered the government to pay the tribe a billion dollars in compensation, or that
the tribe, poor though it is, has refused the land, demanding the land back, or that the billion dollars has been sitting in escrow ever since.

FOX is nauseating.

Trump 2020 campaign is paying for all this, right?

Maybe this is a dumb question but is your house not on land that was once Native American land?

Well, mobs are tearing down and otherwise defacing statues.
It's not divisive, nor table pounding, to point this fact out.

Nor is it divisive to challenge those folks as to whether they, and their narrative which is used to justify such destruction, is correct.

No chit Sherlock. We ARE in a cultural war which began with Obama's transformation of America. The people are finally saying F that

Kind of like General Lee's home being confiscated for which Arlington now stands.

Couldn't be more different. Lee betrayed his country. The United States betrayed the tribe.

So it depends on what side of the equation you're on that justifies the confiscation of land and private property?

If you had meant the side of justice, yes. But apparently you don't see the difference between the unlawful taking under American law of the tribe's land and the lawful seizure of property for non payment of taxes under American law.

No, but that was a Steven Miller speech 100%.
I think you mean SStephen, not SSteve. That’s de-shoveled Bannon, the deconstruct-or and European reich-wing election guru.

So basically, OP is echoing the talking points issued by the Democratic National Committee:

Actually, the grounds of Lee's mansion were selected as the site of Arlington National Cemetery, in part to ensure that Lee would never again be able to return to his home.

Actually, the legal basis for taking the property was non payment of the real estate taxes.

All of this is beside the point. The question raised by the original post is why would the FOX commentators not find a story as poignant as this of interest to viewers. The answer must be that the only interest of the commentators was in keeping the viewers from hearing it.

The history shows the taxes were attempted to be paid by Lee's cousin. Government would not take the payment insisting payment could only be made by Lee. She never showed so the land went up for sale and there was Uncle Sam just waiting. Timing is everything

Mobs are defacing and tearing down statues erected to honor traitors who fought against U.S. soldiers.

America is also not facing a crime wave. Crime, especially in cities, is at decade lows. Those are "the facts." Trump's purpose is to stow fear for partisan purposes.

The OP was a claim that objecting to statue toppling is divisive.

With respects to FOX NEWS, they were covering Trump's speech as opposed to the Sioux claims to the land. Had they chosen to report on the latter, they would have had to point out:

1. The Sioux had invaded and conquered the land in the 1700s.
2. The USA government made good faith efforts to keep miners out in pursuant of the treaty.
3. Those efforts proved impossible.
4. The Sioux Indians were awarded compensation.
5. The Sioux Indians refused the compensation.

Obama began a transformational culture war? Who knew? If by "culture war" you mean doing more than giving lip service to racial equality, gender equality and LGT rights, you are right. You are also right that people are saying F to "that" but not the that you think it is.

Ulysses Grant was a traitor? Francis Scott Key was a traitor? I don't think so.

How the USA handled the rebels after the war is a model that all countries faced with such an unfortunate situation should follow.

Crime is, quite literally, shooting up. Whether it is a statistical blip or portends tragedy in the future is a legitimate area of inquiry.
