[snip] Mask-wearingsoon turned into a partisan squabble between lovers of liberty who hate government mandates and supporters worried about getting sick or infecting others. The consequences of the deep divisions are starting to appear as coronavirus cases surge in Texas, but a mask remains a public health, political and religious statement.

Covid-19 hospitalizations across the state have more than tripled since the beginning of the month, and hit an all-time daily record of 8,076 cases on Wednesday, according to the state health department. Greg Abbott has pleaded with citizens to wear masks and finally issued an order requiring them Thursday, effective on Friday.[/snip]

-------------------------------------------------------------------------

Despite the numbers in Texas matching those of NY during the height of their infections, despite science proving that masks prevent the spread of this virus, despite everything, are we really to believe that these people in Texas are objecting and refusing to wear a mask because it would make the US out to be like a 'communist country' ?

Here's my opinion for what it's worth. I don't think these people really believe that asking them to wear a mask is akin to being a communist tactic to control them or stifle their freedom of expression. At this point in the 'mask wars' I believe that these people refuse to give in because it will feel to them that they are giving in to the democrats, the 'libruls', their apparent sworn enemy. I don't think it has anything to do with violating any of their freedoms, but has more to do with violating their oath to Trump.

I agree that at this point it is mostly about giving in.

since being informed that i'm a commie, i have begun to embrace it. quarantine the militant maskless, and force them to choose between watching MSNBC and Cop Rock during the quarantine. drive them to quarantine in electric converted Trabants.

muhaha

Yes. Giving in would be to admit that their "alternative facts" repeated nightly on Fox News and other conservative rags were in fact lies and propaganda meant to deceive them into sacrificing their safety for the good of the GOP, and that the mainstream media was in fact telling them the truth.

Agreed. Before you can give in, you have to admit you were wrong. That doesn't happen in Trumpworld

The state and city governments look like idiots when they create these coody codes, yet sat on their laurels and ignored and even condone the Floyd riots. Then, turn around and claim the riots had no effect on spreading the kung flu.

They shear sheep don't they? That's what is going on here. We tell you to stay home, wear a mask if you go out. Problem is the power elites haven't got an answer for the virus, no time line, no antivirus, not solution for the effect this is having on the economy people's economic health. Oh, but democrats don't care. Vote Joe Biden. Ever seen the movie, "Fifty First Dates"? This is the title for Joes victory video. Every day Joes wakes up he will have to watch a video to tell him he won because his memory is going to be totally gone.

Doesn't make them commies.

Still better than 4 more years of Trump.

This is why we end up with such a disproportionate number of cases and deaths from coronavirus, idiots on the right making masks a Constitutional / political ideology issue.

I always thought Texas had lots of Christians. If so they certainly don't seem to buy into the "Love your neighbor as you love yourself" edict.

Texas has a lot of people who attend church services.

Alternative facts?
Show us the science that supports the position that masks mitigate the spread of the disease. As far as I can telling the wearing of a mask is nothing but an opinion.

Anti-maskers are just as retarded as Anti-vaxxers.

The issue was settled in 1869 and guess what, wear the frickin' mask or else...

You are joking right?

But the strongest evidence in favor of masks come from studies of real-world scenarios. “The most important thing are the epidemiologic data,” said Rutherford. Because it would be unethical to assign people to not wear a mask during a pandemic, the epidemiological evidence has come from so-called “experiments of nature.”

A recent study published in Health Affairs, for example, compared the COVID-19 growth rate before and after mask mandates in 15 states and the District of Columbia. It found that mask mandates led to a slowdown in daily COVID-19 growth rate, which became more apparent over time. The first five days after a mandate, the daily growth rate slowed by 0.9 percentage-points compared to the five days prior to the mandate; at three weeks, the daily growth rate had slowed by 2 percentage-points.
