Half the U.S. population is without a job

Facts? You mean the fact that you made an ignorant post acting like $2400 a month is a lot of money? The only "fact" here is your ignorant post. Go on licking Trump's ass. You are dismissed because I don't waste my time with someone who thinks $28,800 a year is a lot of money in 2020. Un****ingbelievable ignorance.

For someone who makes half that amount, $2400 a month IS a lot of money...and a LOT of people make half that amount or less.

Wait till the extra unemployment benefits run out in August. If there's no new stimulus to shore up those out of work, the number of unpaid bills will hit the economy and markets like a load of bricks.

Coronavirus: Nearly half the U.S. population is without a job

Nearly half of the population is still out of a job showing just how far the U.S. labor market has to heal in the wake of the coronavirus.

The employment-population ratio - the number of employed people as a percentage of the U.S. adult population - plunged to 52.8% in May, meaning 47.2% of Americans are jobless, according to Bureau of Labor Statistics. As the coronavirus-induced shutdowns tore through the labor market, the share of population employed dropped sharply from a recent high of 61.2% in January, farther away from a post-war record of 64.7% in 2000.

This ratio is a broader look at the employment picture. It takes into account adults not in the labor force and captures those who were discouraged about the prospects of finding a job, whereas the unemployment rate looks at people actively looking for a job.

THanks China.

Damn lot of money for sitting on your rear end doing nothing. For those that are welfare hogs , it's never enough. Free everything say the democrats / progressives. Get rid of your smart phone and it's monthly bill, unplug cable TV.

So let me get this straight...

People who were out of work have been getting $600/week for the last five months or so...that's $2,400/month...up to $12,000 in total...above and beyond the normal unemployment benefits from their states...and they have "unpaid bills"???

Damn...what the **** have they been doing with all that money?

And people think they need MORE???

**** 'em. Tell them to get off their asses and get a job.

Five months? Try barely two months. The CARES Act did not get finalized for state use until the end of April.

Retail sales make up the largest portion of the GDP. If there's no disposable income left from job losses, there won't be much of an economy.

And the whole landlord problem is becoming glaringly apparent.

The single biggest problem facing both workers and small businesses is landlords. Feeding them is claiming a bigger share of what people earn every year, up to 50-70% in some places for shelter expenses alone. It is also why so many small businesses had to close.

On a side note, lots of mortgage holders had their loans "paused" as I did for my truck note. The interest accrued, but that was it. No credit ding, nothing.

Renters were given, at best, six months to pay back all of their back rent. And the "grace" was much less "graceful" in lots of places. Evictions have already been filed in many places that granted no rent amnesty, waiting to be executed when evictions are allowed to resume, tomorrow.

I'm.not sure who they're planning to replace them with though...

Trump needs an empathy coach, you up?

How far does $ 2400/month go out there in CO?

Do not let Mycroft lie to you. Denver, CO rent for a one bedroom is between $1,600 and $2,200 depending on the area. My friend just got a studio for $1,440 per month in Centennial, CO.

Democrats were handed a convenient crisis to destroy the economy and stain Trump.

As if that weren't enough, media has flamed racism at the worst possible time to ensure economic disaster and civil unrest.

I believe a majority of Americans have seen enough of Democrat policy failure and Marxist-Leninist guerrilla tactics to make a decision.

Or trump is totally unequipped to deal with an actual crisis.

I'm going to go with the much simpler explanation backed up with the evidence of my senses.

You can cling to your manufactured narratives. Just stay alert. You'll need a new one in a day or so.

We don't need jobs all we have to do is print money and hand it out. Debt is irrelevant. Lets have parades and celebrations since as long as you are outdoors the virus can't spread. Heck more protest by the 10's of millions. Lets show the world how to spread this virus and destroy our economy in less than a year. We can set all kinds of records for stupidity.

Have you considered that those employees may not feel it's safe to go back to work yet? Who the hell are you to condemn them for wanting to stay protected from a killer pandemic? There's some some facts for you.

Sure. Some of them. But, in Colorado, they must justify their fears with fact such as the working conditions they will be returning to. Their unsupported fears...or worse, claiming fears because they'd rather keep getting the benefits...won't cut it.
Unemployment in Colorado requires people to answer questions to request payment. If they refused to go back to work, they have to answer the question whether they refused work, and then they do not get their payment until they speak with an unemployment agent to explain why. It is then up to the unemployment agent whether that person is still qualified for payments based on the answer. I doubt, "I am afraid of exposure to COVID-19" would fly without also explaining some underlying risk or family risk with proof to continue benefits.

I am skeptical that people are remaining furloughed just to make more money. Those people risk being fired, which would make unemployment go away, or have benefits cut off due to refusing work.

There's going to be a wave of foreclosures and defaults coming this August - Nov as banks and landlords pressure for payments.

Nope but when I get them I get them for free anyway or else I don't go.

Yep.

I guess they will get jobs that require them to like work and stuff.

Not Trump's fault New Yorkers couldn't wash their hands and "denial" has no operative value.

And where would these jobs be, pray tell? What sectors have millions of vacancies? Right now. Today.

Please, this should be awesome!

Are you thinking work houses and such? Skilled professionals building roads by hand in exchange for food?

Do tell of the glorious mechanism whereby the economy absorbs tens of millions of people when the industry they worked in abruptly ceased to exist and won't be profitable enough to open up for a year at least?

The state is certainly aware of the problem, but it's a risk that some are willing to take (getting caught, that is).

For one thing, when an employer calls their furloughed employee back to work, the employer is "asked" to report that to the state. Not all employers do. That means the state may never find out that the employee has refused work.

In any case, our local news is full of reports...especially from restaurant owners...of employees declining to come back to work now that restaurants can open back up...and they are declining for the extra money.

We all know you don't think everybody is eligible for unemployment benefits, so I'm calling bull**** out of the gate.

And you also know that unemployment does not replace income. At best it supplements savings until they run out.I am right at median income. With regular unemployment I'm a good bump under takehome. Fortunately I'm debt averse so I didn't have much debt and have less now.

But lots of people didn't get that $600 a week. Or any regular unemployment, for that matter.

Yall's glib "Drowning? Get a job and buy a boat!" bull**** is really starting to get old.

Yep, you understand how it works better than most. Many people did not qualify for unemployment. I was denied by my 2019 employer because I started with a new employer in November, so my primary 2019 employer was able to claim no responsibility for me losing my more recent position. As a result, I was only able to get November-December benefits, which is barely better than nothing. If not for the $600 per week extra, there is no way I could afford our bills right now.

Imagine if I had started a new job in January and lost it in March? I would have had no benefits at all because my previous employer could claim no responsibility as above, and I would be too close to the recent quarter to get benefits for those 2-3 months.

And you want the federal government to bail everyone's leaky boat, don't you?

Sorry, but I'm all for taking responsibility for one's decisions...good or bad.

Joe Biden can hire them and pay them $15 an hour fair wage with all the money he is saving by having no rallies whatsoever.

Most of the jobs in my field are in the Denver/Boulder area, and my wife is an essential worker in Denver, so I am a bit stuck. How do you handle the crime down in the Springs?

I don't live in the Springs. I just live close to the Springs. (about 15 miles away)

The crime here isn't an issue at all.

But comparing the Springs to Denver, it's mostly a wash in reference to crime.

2020 Compare Cities Crime: Denver, CO vs Colorado Springs, CO

Posts proudly that he thinks $2400 a month is a lot of money.

Thinks I got my ass handed to me for pointing out to everyone that he makes less than my college aged part time hockey referee.

I guess we could all just go out and protest, tear down monuments, statues, have rallies, and even parades since all these gatherings of millions of people shoulder to shoulder does not spread the virus until it just goes away like Trump said. But going back to work responsibly, maintaining social distancing, and finding ways to not spread the virus while doing so clearly cannot be done.
