Princeton University to remove Woodrow Wilson's name from public policy school and residential college (CNN).
Princeton University will remove the name of President Woodrow Wilson from its school of public policy and a residential college, the school said in a statement Saturday.

The Princeton University Board of Trustees voted Friday to rename the policy school the Princeton School of Public and International Affairs, the statement says. The college formerly named for him will be known as "First College" in recognition of its "status as the first of the residential colleges that now play an essential role in the residential life of all Princeton undergraduates," according to the statement.

"We have taken this extraordinary step because we believe that Wilson's racist thinking and policies make him an inappropriate namesake for a school whose scholars, students, and alumni must be firmly committed to combating the scourge of racism in all its forms," the release says.

Wilson was the country's 28th president from 1913 to 1921. He previously had been the president of Princeton and the governor of New Jersey.

One of the most profound statements in the article is this:
"Wilson's racism was significant and consequential even by the standards of his own time," Princeton President Christopher Eisgruber said in a statement. "He segregated the federal civil service after it had been racially integrated for decades, thereby taking America backward in its pursuit of justice. He not only acquiesced in but added to the persistent practice of racism in this country, a practice that continues to do harm today."

Why don't they just leave the name "Wilson" but say the school is named after a famous loyal and trusted friend to a man who was in need of a companion during a dark time in his life...

One of the most profound statements in the article is this:

Wilson was much worse than his predecessor on this issue.
Those who knew history always knew that.
But it doesn't really matter because Roosevelt is being knocked down as well.
Returning to the Year 0 never has a happy ending.

I have a similar view of renaming military installations. Find a worthy "Lee" or "Hill" or "Polk" - I think a "Bragg" or "Benning" might be harder to find. I'd nominate Master Sergeant Gary Gordon to replace the namesake of Fort Gordon.

Yes, what Wilson did was take middle class African-Americans working for the government, have them fired and made into menial laborers. He destroyed families and communities.

Damn. I didn't know that.

The wave has not yet broken.

One of the most profound statements in the article is this:

See liberal democrat Woodrow Wilson= terrible racist

Conservative Christian Republican Woodrow Wilson= first colorblind American President

Erect statues of Coolidge right away!

Clever but insufficient change. A different fort is okay.

Rangers were there and the 82nd was activated though not deployed. Sounds like a Benning thing. Wasn't some 10th Mountain there? I dunno if we're changing Ft. Drum. Special Ops HQ is Bragg.

So Benning and Bragg units were present during the act. I dunno which Ranger Bat it was.

Are people just learning of the racist history of Democrats? Shocking, but at least we are making progress.

People are actually learning history which is a beneficial consequence of the current mood.

Absolutely. Hopefully the Democratic Party takes positive changes to address the rascist history of their party name. That would be a big step in hopefully progressing away from their previous policies and actions, since people are already tearing down statues of Democrats and removing the names of Democrats from public and private buildings. America could use the positive changes right about now.

This already had begun with the civil rights movement and legislation signed by Lyndon Johnson when Dixie Democrats changed to Republicans rather than embrace a change in their party which lost the South to the party of Lincoln.

But still the name remains. Time's up.

I get tired of this nonsense, as if it had any current meaning. Party labels were different in 1861, too. The parties reversed positions in 1964. So Republicans have had 50 years to get racism out of their platform and membership, but they still haven't.

There's a reason statues are coming down and the names of buildings are being changed and state flags are being re designed. Feel free to be on the wrong side of history, but progress will happen whether you like it or not.

I don't know why the **** you think that is responsive to my post. I've been in the right side of history for most of my life.

If you don't think that the major American political party that supported slavery, jim crow laws, segregation and other racial discrimination laws should distance itself from its racial history and take strides away from the names and institutions that represented those laws, then you are indeed on the wrong side of history. I stand by that.

If you think they haven't been doing that then you are insensitive to history. I'm all in favor of atonement, but it's kinda like saying that "well, the party that is 10% responsible needs to take responsibility, but the party that is 90% responsible gets a pass."

Great! So you will be leading the charge to get the racist war criminals FDR, Truman, JFK and LBJ erased from history, right?

Is another right winger lying about the pary's demographic shifts? Why, yes. Yes he his.
