House approves statehood for DC in 232-180 vote | TheHill

In an entirely partisan vote, the House approves of Washington D.C to become a state. The catch here is that the Senate will unlikely vote on the bill at least in 2020. Senate Republicans and the President are dead set against making it a state, fearing it would create 2 Senate seats for the Democrats.

This means, if Biden is elected President, the bill would be able to go through the Senate and voted on.

Not necessarily. Biden being elected president does not mean the Democrats would take control of the U.S. Senate.

The Republican-controlled Senate is not expected to consider the legislation, and Republican President Donald Trump has publicly opposed the move.

On the House floor ahead of the vote, Republican lawmakers argued that making the district into a state was a political ploy by Democrats and would require an amendment to the U.S. Constitution. Some also said Washington was not equipped to be a state and should be absorbed back into Maryland.

U.S. House approves Washington, D.C., statehood in historic vote

President Donald Trump told The New York Post in May: “DC will never be a state.

The Office of Management and Budget (OMB) said that the bill is “unconstitutional” because it violates the 23rd Amendment, which grants D.C. three Electoral College votes, The Hill reported.

It is past time that the residents of DC (nearly 700,000 people) be given a voice and vote in both chambers of congress.

A blue sweep of the WH, the Senate, and the House will lead to DC becoming a state next year.

That could be accomplished by giving the land back to MD.

Honestly, I wouldn't have a problem with that. Maryland would get more representatives and more electors, with the end result being that those people would have representation and voting powers in congress.

There would be court challenges for years if not decades.

And what do you think will happen once the Republicans are back in power (you know that's inevitable).

The Bill would name it the state of Washington, which we already have, and reduce the size of DC to just the area around the mall and Whitehouse. It is a pointless ploy. As has been suggested, just make the residents Marylanders and be done with it.

The number of people who live in DC is an argument *against* statehood. Who wants to give more power to assholes who exist only because of the federal government.

Maryland already has the city (Baltimore) that is not in a county. Then they would also get the city that is not in a state.:)

Why do you want to disenfranchise American citizens from their right to representation?

If Washington D.C were to become a state, they would be ranked 49th in population. Vermont and Wyoming have less residents. Do you believe Vermont and Wyoming shouldn't be a state?

There's really only two solutions here: Make WDC a state or have DC citizens claim to be Maryland residents. It would only add maybe one more congress person to the ledger. Of course, making DC apart of Maryland would require us to amend the 23rd amendment.

where are republicans going to get more uneducated white Christians to win nationally? they tapped out that demographic out already

I have a population of 1. Make me a state. LA has a poulation of 12 million. Make it a state. And New York and Chicago. Make them states.

States are states for a reason. Research why states became states. DC doesn't qualify. Not even close.

Maybe, MD also has Baltimore County which contains no incorporated cities.

And the House Dumbos see this as more important then, say, police reform?

Not a serious answer. The house, senate, and President would have to approve. More over, the states surrounding you would have to give the thumbs up. The fact that WDC gets 3 electoral college votes AND say in the Republican/Democrat delegate count, is good reason to move toward statehood.

What makes you think that the Republicans are based on "uneducated, white Christians"? You're repeated a myth.

By the way, I have a Bachelor's of Science degree. As do two of my sisters and one has a Masters.

as the founders knew, it gives the seat of the federal government too much power

Such unlikely suits (as you suggest) would be quickly, so very quickly dismissed.

And no Congress is going to rescind statehood.

So you and your good sisters are the exceptions that prove the rule.

That is not permitted by the US Constitution. See; Article 1 Section 8 clause 17.
