Retired Marine Gen. John Allen: Trump's threats of military force may be 'the beginning of the end of the American experiment'

Retired Marine Gen. John Allen: Trump's threats of military force may be 'the beginning of the end of the American experiment' - CNNPolitics

A retired four-star Marine general on Wednesday excoriated President Donald Trump's threats to use the military on protesters and his controversial church photo op on Monday, writing that his actions "may well signal the beginning of the end of the American experiment."

Gen. John Allen, the former commander of American forces in Afghanistan and former special presidential envoy for the Global Coalition to Counter ISIS under the Obama administration, wrote in an op-ed for Foreign Policy that "to even the casual observer, Monday was awful for the United States and its democracy."

His comments come after the President declared himself "your president of law and order" as peaceful protesters just outside the White House gates were dispersed with gas, flash bangs and rubber bullets, apparently so Trump could visit a nearby church. He remained at the boarded-up building for a matter of minutes before returning to the White House.

Hearing the words "the beginning of the end of the American experiment" should be as frightening to all Americans as it is to me. There's many reasons to believe that Col. John Allen has good reason to be deeply trouble over the events of the past months, but more than that, the end to democracy in the US has been predicted for many years. It didn't happen overnight, it has been an insidious crawl that the US has found itself in. Yes, this county has many pandemics going on simultaneously and the pandemic of police abuse, abuse of power by Trump and Barr, and the overall feeling that our society is undergoing something that's going to cripple democracy and whether we survive as a democratic nation is very much in question today.

I was watching the "The Voice" recently and America voted for the pastor who can barely sing but is Christian. I commented to my girlfriend early on that if he wins it's proof that America shouldn't be allowed to vote on anything. Of course he won.

I thought I was being funny, but I'm starting to wonder...

I don't agree with the use of federal military forces to secure security within the US.
But then I don't agree with the idiotic 'woke' public policies that allowed riots to grow with the justification of 'Let them blow off steam' either.

The idiocy of 'Woke' public policy will be the death of us all and the death of the US nation.

You forget that peaceful assembly is a 1st amendment right. The hooligans that caused the looting and burning were outside agitators many of them from Right wing groups. Their actions do not negate the others 1st amendment rights.
Meanwhile you don't "agree" with Trump's policy of using our military but do you denounce it or do you not really mind it that much? It's just another Trumpism so what's the big deal right?

True, but that doesn't excuse the idiotic 'woke' public policies that allow such rioting to spread like a virus, of which, many from the left do little more than stand on the slide lines and cheer, rather than up hold and enforce the law. I'm skeptical of the left attempting to blame the rioting on 'outside agitators many of them from Right wing groups'. Who's drop shipping bricks in the middle of riots? Eh? That's like pouring gasoline in the middle of a tinderbox and then standing back and stupidly wonder 'Why'd it explode?'

So much bull**** and miss-characterization typical of leftists. I clearly did not support federal military intervention, and, yet again, showing your TDS mental affliction.

Get some mental help. Conflating rioters with those who are in fact exercising their 1st amendment rights peacefully does you no credit, nor should it.

So much of the same stuff that you and the rest of the anit-trump camp have been running your mouth's about and possessed no actual ability of proving as such. Is something that we should just start trusting that is actually happening.. because you say so?

Yeah, call me when something actually happens.

Humble Pi:

Yes, it is alarming when four top military brass, most retired but wise nonetheless, draw attention to how American governance and democracy has changed for the worse. The problems started long before President Trump came to power, but there is no denying that the sitting president has accelerated and worsened this very dangerous problem over the last 3.5 years. Whenever I watch President Trump I see in my mind's eye the Muppet's Sam the Eagle but I here something much more ominous. It is an echo of this newsreel footage from 1929 and the phrases which can be heard starting around 1 minute into the short clip.

History may not necessarily repeat itself, but it sure does rhyme.

Cheers and be well.

The American experiment ended in the 60s. We are now governed by extreme leftist political thought. I don’t know why does Colonel thinks America is on the decline just now, the events of the last week or so have shown that there is very few ways that all Americans can continue to exist in the same nation.

Of course in my political philosophy, the American experiment was doomed from the start.

Why do you put so much stock in what a general says about issues well outside his area of expertise?

Another Trumpism like the one you are touting now thats theres some very fine people on both sides
Where is your condemenation for everyone on the side of the rioters, like you had during Charlottesville. Oh I know, this time its different, because this time, you agree with whats being protested. Now your understanding and tolerant toward the people who take it too far.

Excellent commentary .........

Retired Marine Gen. John Allen: Trump's threats of military force may be 'the beginning of the end of the American experiment'

It is Mattis who is in violation of the Constitution by urging active members of the military to disobey the Commander in Chief.

And it is the radical left including ANTIIFA that are threatening the country.

Trump is on the side of the Constitution and protecting Americans' lives of all race from destruction, violence and looting happening in horrifically governed Blue Cities.

Any time Fake News CNN cites a supposed authority, red flags should go up and the opposite should be assumed.

The General is terribly ignorant. Constitutional expert John Eastman on Fox last night pointed out the parts of the Constitution that give Trump the right to enact this policy if he chooses.

And he pointed out that it has been used dozens of times including by Democrat LBJ.

Babbles the guy who's totally blind to the real threats.

'Leftists' ? How could that be since it's the liberal left that's fighting for equality for all men, black men are not an exclusion to use as they are to conservatives. These problems began with Ronald Reagan, a Republican. He was advised by people like Lee Atwater and the 'southern strategy' used to increase white support in the South through black repression. It never ended under subsequent republican presidencies.

Stop the deflection, your party is the party of white supremacy and racists.

That's funny, CNN isn't the only main stream news source that published this, but you wouldn't know that because you're too narrow-minded and FOX brainwashed to want to find that out for yourself. You're the babbler.

I'm pretty sure what he just claimed was common knowledge, reported by various reliable news sources.

True, there are lots of other corrupt, dishonest media outlets. So freaking what? I'm supposed to accept the word of a group of liars?

No response to this?

Well actually they are not fighting for the equality of all people. They believe that homosexuals a class of people never mentioned in the constitution, have more rights than religious people. And apparently looters and violent rioters get to assemble and churches cannot even the writing is not protected by the First Amendment and religious practice is. So no your statement is factually in accurate and you know it’s in accurate.
